You want to know something incredibly true but retarded. Before agricultural farmers told us that we need to eat carbs mostly through their nutrition pyramid that was ordered by them in 1992. We mostly ate fat and meat. I have been feeding my dog on meat for a few years now, instead of store bought dog food. He's never been healthier. I switched over to Keto, mainly fat and meat, I've never felt better. I eat some green vegetables but mostly fat and meat. I think we've been scammed for decades to enrich those who scam us. I remember growing up and wondering how people in movies stayed thin and what not. Most personal trainers will tell you its 80% diet 20% working out. They're not wrong. Those people in movies cut sugar and restricted carbs. Keto does this. I think this move to insect protein is feasible but also retarded. You need to eat way more bugs to get the same protein as you do from a steak. But its marketed as equivalent but bugs are way more green. The only thing that is true is that its more green. The switch to bugs will increase the price of meat drastically. Limiting it to the wealthy. I feel like the decisions being made have never been for our health but always mascaraed as public health decisions.

Edit: I just discovered The World Health Organisation edited the pyramid in 2002, apparently defining things as "carbs, fats, oils...etc" Same information from what I gather but was done to simplify it for all. So even the most laymen person could understand with their pictures.

The push to eat carbs is one of the US dept of agricultural's many boneheaded ideas for how the US uses the excess corn the govt pays farmers to make. The food pyramid disappeared around the same time that ethanol subsidies began.

We’ve known this for decades. High protein (at lest 60% of any meal), vegetables, and berries. And healthy fats, you can’t eat just any fats. Also, dogs need more than just meat and fat, they also need vitamins and nutrients you get from vegetables. Green beans, peas, raspberries / strawberries, carrots, and fish oil is good for them. Please do some more research if all you’re feeding your dog is meat and fat.

11
Tom94 11 points ago +17 / -6

Yes, packs of wolves are always seen out picking beans and berries. Fat and protein and organ meat gives you all the notorious one needs.

7
Faraday27 7 points ago +10 / -3

Wolves do actually eat a large number of grasses, fruits, and vegetables. Upwards of 40% of their diet is random plants they eat as they meander about before winter hits.

6
Tom94 6 points ago +7 / -1

Just found your source https://rangerplanet.com/what-do-wolves-eat-complete-list-of-what-a-wolf-preys-on/

looks like they do it out of necessity "Therefore, their diet has adapted to accommodate the different seasons, their changing environments and therefore the availability of food."

No pray no meat. Kids in Africa eat cooked clay and dirt. With your logic humans need it in their diet. This is clearly not the case. If Wolves could eat meat they would eat entirely meat and be healthier I'm sure. I know this because my dogs healthier and so am I from cutting sugar and carbohydrates.

Further in your source it states "Vitamins and nutrients in a wolf’s diet With a majority of a wolf’s diet made up of prey, organs such as lungs, liver, heart, and kidneys are given importance, which is high in B vitamins, vitamin A, minerals, and fatty acids that are required for maintenance, growth, and reproduction.

On average, a wolf’s diet consists of a whopping 49% protein, 44% fat and 6% carbohydrate, resultant in consuming 85% to 90% meat."

If I'd used a single source I'd have linked it, but instead, I verified over a multitude of articles. I imagine you can do the same.

I don’t have a dog, but I’m interested in hear how the meat diet works. Do you feed your dog raw meat or do you cook it up like you would for yourself?

Do you feed your dog the same type of meats you buy, or do you buy certain cuts for your dog as with yourself?

5
RagnarD 5 points ago +5 / -0

You can feed the meat raw or cooked, but you also need to supplement their diet with organ meat and bones. The bones need to be uncooked. Never feed your dog cooked bones.

I actually got a settlement check from Blue Buffalo a few years ago. They lied and overstated the claims about their food. It actually had a negative effect on some dogs. Wait until the vets weigh in and start providing data that shows animals who eat kibble have a shorter life span and more disease than those who eat whole foods

2
SuddenlyClintoned 2 points ago +2 / -0

I worked in pet nutrition for over 10 years.

There's good and bad kibble, just as there's good and bad raw, and good and bad human foods.

Common sense, read ingredients. If it reads like a meat free burger, don't feed it to your dog.

Corn/wheat/soy/pulp/by-product in the top 5-6 ingredients, immediate no.

If it reads "deboned beef, beef meal, sweet potato, potato, peas, salmon, etc...". It's probably good. But there's exceptions to that too deep for this thread, too XD.

If I had my way as a nutritionist, a bag of food would be $160. But through compromise with companies, we have to decide somewhere between my ideal and their marketable.

2
45best45 2 points ago +2 / -0

Isn't that about what decent kibble costs? I used to pay around $140USD for a 26lb bag.

1
SuddenlyClintoned 1 point ago +1 / -0

Oof. Not from my experience, but that depends where you buy it, I suppose.

I'm Canadian, so the food pricing is abhorrent here. But most of the foods in my rotation are 59.99-84.99 CAD, I occasionally do mix in a brand @94.99, but when it's +$100 w/ tax, I wince a bit doing that every 2 weeks, even if it's worth it for the quality I know the food to be.

My last lab made it to a month off 16 though, and she was in decent shape in keeping up on a daily short walk until literally the last week. So I think I'm not being too bad by compromising. But I also shop at a place that's VERY price aggressive.

2
Perhelion 2 points ago +2 / -0

Someone else here said they give their dog Nulo. What do you think of that brand? 🤔🧐

2
SuddenlyClintoned 2 points ago +2 / -0

I'm not super familiar with that brand from an operations standpoint, but it reads well.

It's made by CJ foods, which is reputable.

From a marketing standpoint, I think they'd do well to swap chicken fat for another fat source (salmon oil, coconut oil, etc) since they advertise as chicken-free, but that's not harmful or bad to include even if targeting chicken issues - as dogs won't be allergic to the fat source, even if they react to the protein - but the general public, and even most of the people selling the food have no knowledge of that.

My honest stance on food is rotate between a few quality brands. The manufacturers want you to believe you have to buy their food for 14 years until your dog dies, but if you rotate their diet, you reduce the risk of intolerances developing, long-term deficiency, it makes traveling easy as you can find other good quality foods if you run out, or if your food is in short you can just pick another.
That, and no matter how much I love steak and potatoes... I would appreciate a bit of change, I hope my dogs do, too xD

2
Perhelion 2 points ago +2 / -0

Interesting! What brands would you recommend using in the rotation?

2
SuddenlyClintoned 2 points ago +2 / -0

Foods are often very geographically available. Personally being from Canada, many of mine are Canadian - I use Merrick, First Mate, Open Farm, Canadian Naturals, Now, Go. I've also used Stella and Chewy's raw coated and Acana/Orijen in the past.

Best thing you can do is learn to read ingredient panels; in lame man's terms: avoid corn, wheat, soy, by-products, etc.

I like high meat foods to include deboned meats(this helps keep ash lower), and if it has meal, I like it including fresh as well for palletability/appeasement.

You'll have to seek what's local to you.

1
Perhelion 1 point ago +1 / -0

I’m saving your comment! Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!

2
SuddenlyClintoned 2 points ago +2 / -0

No worries. Honestly, dog nutrition isn't that different from human nutrition. Reading ingredient lists is the best thing you can do for yourself and your dog.

Do you know how get healthy, fibrous vegetables to taste as good as meat? Fat and cholesterol are added, along with artificial flavors. They're not even low calorie, so you will not lose weight switching from real meat. Beef is much healthier than these vegetable, oil, and chemical concoctions.

Have at it, I'm not saying you shouldn't eat vegetables. I'm saying, eating less meat will not make you healthier. I'm certainly not saying eating MORE meat will make you healthier either. Moderation in everything.

However, cutting meat out of your diet entirely will leave you missing quite a lot of proteins, vitamins, and minerals you can't otherwise get unless you take a bunch of pills and shots for some (Vitamin B12 apparently has very little vegetable sources). I have known a few vegetarians that either acknowledge that you teeter on the edge of unhealthy because of the lack of nutrition; 1 started eating meat again, another gets a B-12 shot at a clinic once a month and has to take a lot of other vitamins.

I'm not even saying that you or anyone else shouldn't be a vegetarian/vegan or that they can't be healthy. I'm all for it. It's your life, your body, your choice. By all means, more meat for me. I'm just against the distortion that less meat is healthier or that vegetarianism/veganism is healthiest diet.

American diet is garbage, but I think most dieticians would argue it has much less to do with meat vs vegetables and a whole lot more to do with sugar. If i were to cut out one thing from a diet to make myself healthier, sugar would be it.

2
deplorable-d00d 2 points ago +2 / -0

Very well put.

Everything in moderation. I actually don't like beef much. Never have. I don't like chocolate either.

0
Droford 0 points ago +1 / -1

I agree to a point. The ground up plant stuff you substitute for ground beef is actually really good if you're putting it into a pasta sauce, sloppy Joe or chili. A couple times when I've found it on clearance and it was cheaper than the real ground beef, I've bought it and used it in those applications and no one even noticed (especially if you sprinkle a little beef bouillon over it) Buy the actual hamburgers, while leaps and bounds better than original veggie burgers are still nothing like a good burger.

Ground beef these days is either really expensive or cheap because they throw cheap cuts and cut it with a lot more fat..
