Israel as a nation was created to give the US a political reason that Americans would accept to remain in the area or enter the area as needed to maintain that hold.
Now, I'm not suggesting that the Palestinians are justified in their attacks, nor the Israelis justified to be there (I don't have a horse in that race), but the reason Democrats push the Islamist bullshit is because they'd rather simply exert pressure on the Islamic nations that produce oil directly rather than do it via implied or real force of arms.
This will backfire on them the moment said Islamic nations remove the potential justifications for western interference in the region, as we will then have no foothold and thus control will be ceded to whomever can put troops there most easily -- which is probably Russia. And Russia works better for the Islamic nations too, since they don't have the naval power that the US does, and would most likely have to move troops in by land, which is easier to deal with via guerilla tactics, sabotage, and insurgency.
