This! I had the "luck" to be born at the top of the Slippery Slope. I've been watching our situation degrade my whole life: the law-abiding polite society I once knew is unrecognizable, swamped by crime and degeneracy, all applauded and promoted by the Tolerant Left and Hollywood movies/TV shows. The tutorials for crime/violence/narcissism that Hollywood presents as "entertainment" result in copycats trying to out-degenerate whatever they've grown up watching, and the cycle repeats (with a higher body count.)
It was folly to think our situation would ever improve, not with that much "progressive" momentum dragging us down, and the DNC/MSM alliance encouraging it. Obviously envy, crime and murder are not new. The Bible starts off with a tale of murder by jealousy (Cain & Abel.) There was a terrible serial-killer case in the 1920s and Ed Gein's misdeeds in the 1950s. They didn't have gore movies to inspire them, they came up with those desires on their own. Like Jesse James and other "celebrity" outlaws before them, Bonnie & Clyde and John Dillinger were often celebrated by the makeshift media at the time and portrayed as "Robin Hood" takers from the rich/givers to the poor. That accomplished exactly what one would expect, citizens helping them evade capture. All of those crime-sprees were aided by "moral" support from the newspapers/dime-novels that were the MSM of their time.
We also dealt with congressional/legal proceedings in the 1980s accusing rock bands of "subliminal messages" coaxing fans to kill themselves or commit crimes. Obviously Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne never intended their music to have an ill effect on anyone, much less their fans. As (guitarist) Glenn Tipton said at the time, the notion was ridiculous: why would any business try to kill off their customers, and how would encouraging fans to off themselves help record sales? Of course those kids that killed themselves would have done it had they been listening to Milli Vanilli (maybe even sooner, in that case.) The same goes for the Manson Family, their crimes were not "caused by the lyrics of a Beatles album."
Anyway : ) Nobody forces these people to do dumb/illegal stuff, some people are just hard-wired to do the wrong thing. There was much less crime and bad public behavior in previous decades, because children were much more likely to respect their parents, teachers, and police. The more-recent divorce/illegitimacy rates combined with the trend toward leniency for misbehavers and criminals led us toward our current state of general rudeness and narcissism. MSM and social-media glorifying criminal thugs and disruptive attention-seekers just leads to more of that, and the Slippery Slope increases the "progressive" momentum.
tl;dr Yes: it's a personal choice to either behave as a normal productive law-abiding member of society, or to be an abnormal drain on society and prey upon the innocent for drug-money (or just for fun.) But the peer-pressure from social-media and the constant glorification of gun crime/unprovoked violence from MSM absolutely has an effect on what acts those people choose to imitate.

Your cell phone works, you car runs, you have a microwave and a fridge and an air conditioner. Life is comfortable, safe, and predictable, for us and those we care about.

This! I had the "luck" to be born at the top of the Slippery Slope. I've been watching our situation degrade my whole life: the law-abiding polite society I once knew is unrecognizable, swamped by crime and degeneracy, all applauded and promoted by the Tolerant Left and Hollywood movies/TV shows. The tutorials for crime/violence/narcissism that Hollywood presents as "entertainment" result in copycats trying to out-degenerate whatever they've grown up watching, and the cycle repeats (with a higher body count.)
It was folly to think our situation would ever improve, not with that much "progressive" momentum dragging us down, and the DNC/MSM alliance encouraging it. I fully understand my elderly relatives' despair at seeing the state of their nation in the 1960s/70s, because I feel exactly that when I see the dishonesty and violence plaguing our society.

Obviously envy, crime and murder are not new. The Bible starts off with a tale of murder by jealousy (Cain & Abel.) There was a terrible serial-killer case in the 1920s and Ed Gein's misdeeds in the 1950s. They didn't have gore movies to inspire them, they came up with those desires on their own. Like Jesse James and other "celebrity" outlaws before them, Bonnie & Clyde and John Dillinger were often celebrated by the makeshift media at the time and portrayed as "Robin Hood" takers from the rich/givers to the poor. That accomplished exactly what one would expect, citizens helping them evade capture. All of those crime-sprees were aided by "moral" support from the newspapers/dime-novels that were the MSM of their time.
We also dealt with congressional/legal proceedings in the 1980s accusing rock bands of "subliminal messages" coaxing fans to kill themselves or commit crimes. Obviously Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne never intended their music to have an ill effect on anyone, much less their fans. As (guitarist) Glenn Tipton said at the time, the notion was ridiculous: why would any business try to kill off their customers, and how would encouraging fans to off themselves help record sales? Of course those kids that killed themselves would have done it had they been listening to Milli Vanilli (maybe even sooner, in that case.) The same goes for the Manson Family, their crimes were not "caused by the lyrics of a Beatles album."
Anyway : ) Nobody forces these people to do dumb/illegal stuff, some people are just hard-wired to do the wrong thing. There was much less crime and bad public behavior in previous decades, because children were much more likely to respect their parents, teachers, and police. The more-recent divorce/illegitimacy rates combined with the trend toward leniency for misbehavers and criminals led us toward our current state of general rudeness and narcissism. MSM and social-media glorifying criminal thugs and disruptive attention-seekers just leads to more of that, and the Slippery Slope increases the "progressive" momentum.
tl;dr Yes: it's a personal choice to either behave as a normal productive law-abiding member of society, or to be an abnormal drain on society and prey upon the innocent for drug-money (or just for fun.) But the peer-pressure from social-media and the constant glorification of gun crime/unprovoked violence from MSM absolutely has an effect on what acts those people choose to imitate.

Your cell phone works, you car runs, you have a microwave and a fridge and an air conditioner. You can still talk about which streaming server you're boycotting because we still live in a world where we can sit on our couches with a hot pizza and watching streaming services. Life is comfortable, safe, and predictable, for us and those we care about.

On a return trip, I was pre-emptively offered a one-off TSA Pre-Check on my return flight but still refused their millimeter scanner. They seemed shocked that someone would throw out convenience for a manual screening.

The fact that so many people would sacrifice literally everything to save themselves from a minimal level of discomfort has been a bit disconcerting.
