The idea of having "one China" to prevent internal wars goes back 2,200 years and is taken very seriously by Chinese. This does not mean mainland China is the legitimate government of Taiwan. They are the legitimate government of Hong Kong, but are seriously violating their 1997 agreement with the UK to allow self-rule.

Indeed. Those dumb mainlanders should stop splitting up the Middle Kingdom, then.

"Ilha Formosa", Beautiful Island. Per Wikipedia the all-knowing. A lovely phrase.

What grinds my gears is that, without American aid and our famous Flying Tigers, the Chinese Communist Party would have lost to the Japs easily. Some "allies" they turned out to be. Didn't take them long to forget about that little favor, did it?

We should have invaded them in 1962 after Mao murdered 80 million of his own people.

General Macarthur tried to have us invade them immediately following the surrender of Japan. We would have crushed the Maoists with our nuclear weapons, which were not yet banned by treaty. He was turned down.

He wanted to make North Korea too. God what the world would look like today had he been allowed to win.

Worlds. If 1950-1955 had been handled better, we would have had American cities on the Moon and Mars by now. We would be calling ourselves instead the "USA" now, which of course stands for "Unconquerable Space Armada".
