There is zero chance this is just Baltimore. Kids all over the country are learning less facts and more racism. All because of muh virus.

All because of Common Core, NCLB, a gazillion other federal mandates from the previous century and their elders just being weak in moral fiber.

Kids with special needs don’t have to meet all the same requirements to get a HS diploma in my state. It actually makes a bit of sense when they take more vocational and life skills classes.

1
SpaFixr 1 point ago +1 / -0

Absolutely. I volunteer with autistic kids and their abilities vary widely. Some are incredibly intelligent, some couldn’t get through kindergarten. What they get from the schools is more an honorary degree than anything else.

We as members of our own communities must stand up and fight the school boards on these policies so that teachers like yourself would not be forced into teaching this crap.

We have failed our teachers as much as we have failed our children by allowing these Marxist ideas to creep into our communities.

Get involved locally and become a precinct chair. You may be surprised to learn how the far-left has crept into your local city councils and school boards.

10
chain_rule_gang 10 points ago +10 / -0

I'm one of them. Teaching math fortunately allows me to keep social justice bullshit out of my classroom. Through math I can inject some critical thinking into my kids' heads. Though, this next year I can see "anti-racist" and "social justice" in math trainings on the schedule. Document and record. Forget to deliver in my classroom.

You think liberal teachers are willing to give up even 1 day of their vacation? Lol

This 100%. Buddy of mine and his ultra liberal wife are teachers, both of them were out for a while because of WuFlu. She complained constantly that kids weren’t getting the education they needed being at home. When the lockdowns started to lift for schools, she complained when she heard teachers might have to work through the seasonal break to catch the kids up on the learning they missed out on.

7
minarch 7 points ago +7 / -0

Teachers are only contracted to work 10 months in a year.

I am a teacher. My contract says work 191 days for X pay. If they make me work more, it's a breach of contract and I will sue.

Would you smile and take it if your employer told you to work more hours without pay?

This is an employment issue, not an education issue. The chief problems with schools are (1) low expectations as highlighted by the OP article and (2) shitty curriculum that teachers don't control.

6
chain_rule_gang 6 points ago +6 / -0

I'm working this summer to teach math to all the kids who failed this year. Oh wait. Yeah, I'm the hidden conservative on staff.

18
MythArcana 18 points ago +19 / -1

Yup. If you're failing classes during the normal school season, into summer school you go to make up for it. Instead, they'll let the hoodlims out to break into cars or worse for three months. Teachers and students are creampuffs these days. We're miles past snowflake at this point.

10
Dragofireheart 10 points ago +10 / -0

10

Teachers aren't teaching what parents want: they get marching orders from admin.

5
monkeycat2010 5 points ago +5 / -0

You are right, while teachers have their own issues, it is the administrators that are choking the school system.

They are bureaucrats only interested in their $100+k salaries.

Every school administrator is just a road block in a suit all pumped up for nothing. They are destroying education.

Not very, but Oakland is right across the bridge. This is one of the unspoken secrets of the liberal enclaves, they don't much care for living with the "oppressed". Last I read, SF is 6% black. Oakland is 24%.

SF, last I recall, and I may be off a couple of percentage points, is 45% white, 35% asian, and the rest is a smattering of black, Pacific Islander, and other minorities.

I just did some digging - the Bay Area as a whole has lost black population, and has gained more asian - which is probably h1-b Indians for FANG (Facebook, Apple, Netflix, Google).

16
MAGAMAGMA 16 points ago +16 / -0

Back in the 80s it was nearly 50% black in Oakland. In fact we use to tell this joke...

Q: Whats the longest bridge in the world?

A: The S.F. bay bridge because it goes from Africa to Fairyland

7
FireannDireach 7 points ago +7 / -0

I believe so, I dimly recall the 80's and 90's census' had them pegged in the high 40's. Oakland has had several periods of gentrification and fallback over the decades, the .com boom shifted the demo a lot as rents and home prices skyrocketed, and a lot of the blacks moved further out to Richmond, Pittsburgh and Vallejo. I haven't looked at rents in Oakland for years, but I'd bet they're sky-high because of the Facebook bubble.

I remember back in the 80's, I had to go do something on San Pablo in Oakland, and in broad daylight it was a war zone. It's a bit safer now (international is the bad street now) but Oakland was pretty scary back then. Not as bad as Harlem or South Central, but pretty fucking bad.

5
Meddlesom 5 points ago +5 / -0

How GAY is San Fran?

12
FireannDireach 12 points ago +12 / -0

The most gay in the country, if the demo hasn't shifted, but it's also a small percentage, last I recall it was 6-7%.

It's just more liberal smoke and mirrors. They want you to think half the country is gay, but even in the most dense area for them demographically, it's less than 10%.

Living in and around SF, it's common to run into gays and lesbians, but it's not as common as the media wants you to think it is.

I don't have the stats, but I wouldn't be shocked if Marxists were a higher demo in SF than blacks and gay.

And, let's not forget that asians are 35% of SF, but have almost no power or cultural identity there, except as a tourist destinations and victims of the 6%.

So basically a high school diploma for Baltimore is now meaningless.

This is great. Let the left kill traditional education

25
FireannDireach 25 points ago +25 / -0

High school diplomas have been slowly eroding to meaningless status for a long time now. The first two years of college now teach what high school used to.

Kids can get a diploma now with what was freshman algebra when I was in school. I had to get to pre-calculus to graduate. I've talked to high school students who are A students who have no clue what trig is. (I enjoyed geometry and trig, myself. Calculus kicked my butt in college, but I had a shitty teacher.)

10
julianReyes 10 points ago +10 / -0

4
FireannDireach 4 points ago +4 / -0

6
BloodElfSupporter 6 points ago +6 / -0

Question for people who homeschool:

What is the equivalent of a high school diploma for home schoolers? A GED? I suspect at this rate Americans will all need to homeschool their kids (or maybe send them to non woke private schools) if this trend continues across the nation.

13
REDMARAUDER 13 points ago +13 / -0

You could get a GED.

Most states, however, allow homeschool diplomas. The parent fills out their own diploma and affirms that they legally taught at least the equivalent hours.

If your homeschooler does well on the SAT and takes AP exams with relative success, you don't even need a GED. Colleges and employers don't really judge homeschooling that much differently.

5
BloodElfSupporter 5 points ago +5 / -0

Thank you. How are grades (GPA) calculated? I went to a public high school and am very ignorant when it comes to homeschooling. However, I’m considering homeschooling my future children if this continues.

6
easyonthefiber 6 points ago +6 / -0

Some states have homeschool umbrella programs through private schools. Maryland has this (or did decades ago) which allowed students to graduate and have a diploma from the school, even though they were homeschooled. It prevented the stigma of “homeschooled” or “GED” when trying to get a job or get into college.

Students could also avoid the SAT by doing parallel enrollment in a community college, similar to AP courses. The upside here is after a year of community college courses, colleges didn’t care about your SAT scores.

Of course, now, an AASc degree is meaningless, but it’s a nice little feather in your hat for “I did this on my own, in cash, no loans”

4
julianReyes 4 points ago +4 / -0

Oh don't worry, I'm sure funneling them through college and having them radicalized by professors will fix everything.

Some kids I used to babysit went to a school that literally did this at the annual sports carnival. Everyone who made an attempt at the long jump, shot put, etc. got a ribbon, but so did the kids who refused to try, because "not everyone likes sports and we can't leave them out".

Needless to say, those kids were horrid and I gave up that babysitting gig pretty fast.

Back when I was that age (not so long ago) you only got a ribbon if you finished 1st-3rd in your age group and we were all the better for it.

1
ViagraFalls 1 point ago +1 / -0

I actually entertained the idea of schooling without grades, but now I think it'll only work for intelligent, well-behaved students. Of course on the other end, the children of the bike stealing kind who are genetically destined to have an IQ of 60-80 and whoever else fits the bill are mostly just a waste of time to even attempt teaching them anything more than basic math and reading.

For the good students that make good schools and good neighborhoods, if you remove the pressure of grading interference, you can actually get them to be more ambitious with projects and such. If you make a project 50% of their grade, they will do whatever gets them an easy A. As someone once said, if the only reason we can give a kid to learn something is to get a grade on a paper and pencil test, why are we teaching it in the first place?

Aside from this there seems to be a desire to force kids to like stuff or be interested in stuff. That generally doesn't work and the proper way to do something like that is with exposure and leaving it voluntary. In school I was forced to read literature, and I hated it. The older the stuff the more I hated it. I never saw any point in reading stuff that was so ancient. I still don't have any interest in it and probably never would have in any upbringing or life scenario.

Actually, correcting someone when they are wrong is a way of teaching that produces actual learning very effectively. In the typical, grading system, you lose points when you're wrong, and it's too late to care about what's right or wrong at that point. So for good students I think it would be best to give out ratings based on attendance and putting out effort. I think school for such kids could also be an open-ended, leveling up kind of scenario. If I was allowed to keep leveling up in math, I would've been doing high school math in middle school.

They came with guns to force us to accept these people in our schools.

What has happened since then? Were white people just being mean and racist and keeping the good stuff away from these people who shouldn't be excluded? Well, since then white people have been on the run trying to find the good neighborhoods (ones with the "neighbor," not just "hood") and good schools. Those terms mean schools and neighborhoods without bike thieves. Any schools that include them or similarly poor-performing students need to have lowered standards of academics and conduct because racism. Also, schools are generally run by and full of women, and women are less likely to not compromise standards rather than compromising to be kind and compassionate to those poor, poor students that are dumb or can't behave.

Failing schools have been pushing kids through for decades.

The charter system I used to work for considered 75% failing so a bunch of kids would always get 76ed every term because failing them required mountains of documentation.

When a Moddels was going out of business I bought like 8 teachers 76’ers t shirts if they were in on the joke.

2
Canlog96 2 points ago +2 / -0

75 as a failing grade does seem a bit high. Where I am thats considered average but maybe it’s an educational difference. Could be easier to get a 75 where you are then here. It takes <50 to fail although you probably won’t get anywhere with grades that low. Of course you need a minimum amount of credits to graduate so if you don’t get the credit you’re less likely to graduate.

A student next to me (who happened to be black, which is frankly irrelevant, but I point it out here in the hope of making some SJW lurkers miserable) leans over to me and asks, in that quiet whispery cheaty voice, if he can copy off me. Naturally I say no, because cheating bad. Then, I SWEAR TO GOD, he said this:

"Come on, dude, I need to get into a good college!!!"

Right then and there, I put down my pencil and did a thermonuclear double-facepalm.

That was decades ago, and it still stands in my memory, to this day, as a pinnacle of human idiocy.

Do they really have a choice? They will have 30 year old 8th graders if they don't.

The truly sad thing is that this is not doing these kids any favors... Just like lowering the bar for black admission into college. You are setting them up for failure.

This has been happening since the late 90’s

"Baltimore Doctors Botch Surgeries. Experts Unsure Why." -News headline, ten years from now.

News flash: EVERY school district does this. It’s the remnants of NCLB. The final dagger in public schools.

Talk about setting the kids up for failure.

I thought that was common practice everywhere now. Florida public education is a joke. I've watched a kid go through 4 years of high school not giving a fuck and she's graduating. Needless to say she isn't getting a graduation gift from me because I know she put in almost zero effort and was just passed.

Blue city or county? I am in a VERY red county and kids here seem to be doing well.

I know it’s common practice in elementary school but not high school.

Their parents don’t care, no sure why anyone would.

At one point sympathy or empathy or whatever the word is needs to taken out of the conversation.

Meh I don’t blame them. You try teaching some 16 year old jogger basic algebra.

Why even have them in school to begin with?

Total mystery how they get students with 0.13 GPAs as the average.

At this time, I would like to remind everyone of the work that the 44th President of the United States of America did prior to his more overtly (emphasis on this) political career, and who he was working with:

What is happening within our school systems has been a long time coming (since Dewey, really), but many of the current egregious ills can be directly tied to WHO has been in charge of education policy in the not so recent past.

The rabbit hole is deep, but rather straightforward, and definitely worth exploring.

There will need to be a part added to resumes where it shows the highest math related class you completed with credit.

I have a feeling in the next couple years the amount of students who are able to handle calculus will drop significantly.

Don't forget the resident shithead in office right now. Failed third grade and cheated his way through college. Cheated his way into the White House. He's a role model indeed.
