Over the last several months, I've seen fellow pedes post about how they moved to different areas, and got better paying jobs, and I was always deeply impressed (and touched) to read their stories of perseverance.
As someone with a disability, getting a job is twice as hard as those of someone without, and you're always dealing with the potential "What if?" of having to disclose your disability - though it is illegal in NZ to discriminate on this basis, you can't stop human biases. You break boundaries time and time again, push harder - because it's the only thing you know. And yet, it's incredibly draining.
Two years ago, I got my start in my dream industry, because I gave it all I had in the interview. That, and my (future) boss believed in me. It was only for a fixed-term, so I had to take a permanent job in another industry.
When lockdown news came a few weeks ago, I thought that I'd never get the chance to go back into the industry I truly love. First came one interview, then the final one last Friday - I thought I'd screwed that up beyond measure.
Fast forward to 4:06PM today, just after I finished work for the week, and I got the news I'd never thought I'd hear - "I'd like to make you an offer". In that instant, I got my career back where I want it, and I've almost doubled my pay, too.
This might sound strange, but a lot of that is due to you guys and gals. I never saw negativity, only realism and positivity towards the others I mentioned earlier. No-one said it would be easy, but there was only ever positivity and encouragement. Never negativity.
For that, I couldn't thank you all enough - your energy and positivity meant (and means) everything.
On a final note: I view this as my own personal revenge against the tyrannical government we currently have - when the wasteland of lockdown threatened to destroy my hopes and dreams, I persevered. And now? I stand on the (rather scary) precipice of career that will take me further than I've ever dared dream of. Personal success and ambition are anathema to this "government" - and through this - I've got one over on them. Why? Because I didn't depend on the State to help me.
PS: I think the track "Mesmerizing Waves" from Genshin Impact fits this well.
