Fam,

Over the last several months, I've seen fellow pedes post about how they moved to different areas, and got better paying jobs, and I was always deeply impressed (and touched) to read their stories of perseverance.

As someone with a disability, getting a job is twice as hard as those of someone without, and you're always dealing with the potential "What if?" of having to disclose your disability - though it is illegal in NZ to discriminate on this basis, you can't stop human biases. You break boundaries time and time again, push harder - because it's the only thing you know. And yet, it's incredibly draining.

Two years ago, I got my start in my dream industry, because I gave it all I had in the interview. That, and my (future) boss believed in me. It was only for a fixed-term, so I had to take a permanent job in another industry.

When lockdown news came a few weeks ago, I thought that I'd never get the chance to go back into the industry I truly love. First came one interview, then the final one last Friday - I thought I'd screwed that up beyond measure.

Fast forward to 4:06PM today, just after I finished work for the week, and I got the news I'd never thought I'd hear - "I'd like to make you an offer". In that instant, I got my career back where I want it, and I've almost doubled my pay, too.

This might sound strange, but a lot of that is due to you guys and gals. I never saw negativity, only realism and positivity towards the others I mentioned earlier. No-one said it would be easy, but there was only ever positivity and encouragement. Never negativity.

For that, I couldn't thank you all enough - your energy and positivity meant (and means) everything.

On a final note: I view this as my own personal revenge against the tyrannical government we currently have - when the wasteland of lockdown threatened to destroy my hopes and dreams, I persevered. And now? I stand on the (rather scary) precipice of career that will take me further than I've ever dared dream of. Personal success and ambition are anathema to this "government" - and through this - I've got one over on them. Why? Because I didn't depend on the State to help me.

PS: I think the track "Mesmerizing Waves" from Genshin Impact fits this well.

Congrats!! My husband works for a company that rehabilitates the disabled and hires them as well! He works w a man who is paralyzed from the chest down, a woman in a wheelchair who is completely paralyzed and can’t talk and others w less severe disabilities (some seen and some you can’t see) and it always amazes me how they are always so upbeat n positive all the time! You will be an asset to your new job and an inspiration to others! God Bless!

Congratulations! Taking on the task of perusing your passion is a hard enough bit in the world before 2020, that you slayed those dragons in this current situation is nothing short of spectacular. Enjoy the professional and personal growth this opportunity will guide you through and remember to take credit for your successes. You'll be amazing, fren. Go and kick some ass!

Oh man we are Fam. I love this site. Minus the glowies, doomers, and lefty infiltrators. I can relate to the disability comment. This is something that can break allot of people, depending. I've seen it in support groups. Others, with strong will, it just drives them to push. It's very draining and allot of people just don't understand. I don't want to be "inspirationally" though. To many in far worse shape than I. However, it feels good when you get shit done and don't let anything or anyone hold you back.
Congrats Pede. I wish you nothing but a prosperous life. Bang out some kids and teach them the same values and the country will always remain the land of the free and the home of the brave. 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲

Stand tall, walk forward, cast aside the hate and gather the rewards of your hard work.

And sleep well because it was your hard work that earned those rewards.

*stand tall figuratively if you actually can't

Congrats! Just make sure your principles and values come first. There may come a day when you have to choose between your dream career and your values. We should all be prepared to give up everything when it comes down to it. I'm in that position myself right now. I won't give in to the tyrants for the sake of my dream career/job.

Congrats fren. Now influence those around you. You can make all the difference for others.

Have you figured out a church in your new location? Service to God will enrich you more than money will. Christ said to lay up for yourself treasure in Heaven, for where your treasure is, your heart will be also. Don't forget to have the only retirement plan that matters!

Congrats kiwipede!

Yeah there are laws about disabilities and reasonable accommodations, but you have to be pretty stupid to be caught violating those laws.

A lot of places follow the letter of the law when it comes to an accessible workplace but they do not want that ever to be tested by actual use. :(
