Sugar isn’t really the enemy. We metabolize sugar pretty good. It’s HFCS that’s fucking everybody up because it’s now in everything. Obesity went way up when they substituted sugar w/ HFCS.

Edit: For clarification, I’m not advocating high sugar intake. You should do your best to cut both sugar and HFCS out of your diet.

At 50/50 HFCS you would be correct. However HFCS is 55% to 70% fructose.

That is nonsense, table sugar is sucrose, sucrose is fructose and glucose bonded together with a weak bond that instantly gets split in the stomach. HFCS is fructose and glucose in a solution, of differing ratios, 50/50 would be identical to sucrose. There is no scientific evidence that excessive sugar is healthy for you but HFCS is not. Excess sugar intake from any form is excess calories that get stored as fat and contribute to obesity, cellular stress, and insulin resistance. Any concentrated sugar source should be consumed in moderation.

Please go back and read my post again. I never said excessive sugar consumption was healthy, only that the obesity epidemic started when manufacturers swapped out sugar for HFCS, which would lead one to believe 1) HFCS is metabolized differently. 2) Increase in consumption of HFCS because it’s in everything (like I mentioned). 3) Both.

Also look at obesity trends over time. Note that there’s a large uptick around 1980 when HFCS began being introduced into everything because sugar was getting too expensive and corn was cheap due to government subsidies at the time. I doubt people just started eating/drinking more.

No, I'm not rereading anything, and you're wrong.

It isn't, again, sucrose breaks down into fructose and sucrose almost instantly when it hits your stomach. In your digestive tract they are identical, both simple sugars, both absorbed straight into the blood stream, and almost the same metabolic process in the cells to utilize it.

If only every subject existed in a vacuum and simple conclusions were possible, but correlation does not equal causation. Many other things have gone on and were going on in that time frame. Most notably the "fat free" craze that for sure resulted in increased sugar consumption as companies actively swapped fats in their foods for sugar or HFCS. Overall people's consumption has gone up and activity level down(thought it does fluctuate, but overall downward trend over a longer snapshot or time). There are many factors at play, even the effects of advertising and media on consumer consumption of products which has changed over time. The most common formulas of HFCS are between 40-60% fructose, yes that's right, some hfcs has less fructose than sugar, honey, or any number of other "added sugar" sweeteners. So just think how ridiculous what you are saying is, a slight shift in the ratio of glucose and fructose to one another in diet is a major or primary factor in obesity. It couldn't be the steady increase in added sugar to diets that now accounts for over 15% of total calories consumed for the average person, I guess. Fun fact, after peaking, our rates of overall sugar consumption are actually dropping, while obesity continues to climb. Turns out that human nutrition and wellness is complicated. Sorry to burst the bubble for people that like arguments distilled down to simple scape goats.

Also fun, " In fact, one review paper points out that soda’s acidity actually causes sucrose to split apart into its constituent molecules, meaning the can starts out containing common sugar but looks quite different, at the molecular level, by the time you drink it. The authors note, “It is a sweet irony that purists who must have their sucrose-sweetened sodas end up drinking a sweetener composition more similar to HFCS and have been doing so since the first cola was formulated in the 1880s.”" We were effectively drinking HFCS in sodas all along.

The bottom line is that fructose is not very well handled in large quantities and the high prevalence of HFCS in fizzy drinks is something to be aware of and probably avoided.

Did I at any point say that huge amounts of sugar intake was good for you? No? Thanks for wasting your time. The conversation was sugar(sucrose) vs HFCS, not HFCS vs healthy diet. Calorie for calorie your body handles HFCS about the same as sucrose, a fizzy drink made with sugar is not any healthier even though there are nitwits who drink sodas made with cane sugar and think that's somehow a health food.
