I can kind of see where, on some level, red flag laws make sense - no one wants a bona fide lunatic roaming freely with a gun intent on doing harm.

The only thing RFLs would change in your example would be to remove "with a gun" from the sentence. The bona fide lunatic with intent on doing harm would still be roaming freely.

RFLs approach the problem as a gun issue. It's not a gun issue, it's a people issue. If you want actual results, remove the person from the example, not the object.
