Walt Whitman bridge tolls (philly to nj) were only temporary to pay for the bridge to the tune of 86.9 million back in 1957. Now it collects 124 million annually, the money used for the arts and all kinds of pork. The tolls keep increasing annually. A disgrace.

Same thing with the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. My grandfather kept and showed me the newspaper with the headline saying that the toll was temporary. That was 50+ years ago. Ridiculous.

Yeah, a little over 20 years ago my city put a temporary 1% additional 'hospitality' tax on rooms and restaurants to pay for a convention center. That thing has been paid for 4 times over since then and there is no sign of tax being removed.

$19 to cross the verezzano bridge round trip and they don't even serve refreshments.

Same with the Tacoma bridge in WA.

14 days to flatten the curve was also temporary.

Actually income tax wasn't supposed to be temporary. Just automatic withholding to help fund WWII. But they realized that when people have money stolen every couple weeks they notice it less than when they have to pay the government all at one time the equivalent of the loan they had take out for a car.

True, but wasn't WWII. I think it was passed in 1913 or something like that.

1913 was the income tax. Not the automatic withholding by your employer.

I'm pretty sure income tax was initially supposed to be temporary as well. Or maybe it was supposed to be limited to only super wealthy. Either way, there was major deception involved from the beginning.

It was also supposed to be 1% and never increase and it was billed as a voluntary system. I guess it still is, you can choose not to participate at the cost of everything you have worked for.

IIRC it was passed in the leadup to Prohibition as a way to supplement the loss of taxes from alcohol, which was America's 5th largest industry and the taxes were a major source of government revenue.

When Nixon took the US off the gold standard in 1971, he said it was "temporary." Look how sound and stable our financial system is now!

Let's not forget the telephone tax instituted in 1898 to pay for the Spanish American war.
