You think printing money won't help fight this tranistory inflation? Looks like we've got a verified racist here guys!

45
party12 45 points ago +47 / -2

LOL. If you have time, listen to this. This guy apparently predicted the financial collapse in 2006.

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/peter-schiff-on-bidens-dysfunctional-economy-inflation/id1532976305?i=1000541265839

I have to laugh because he said the new thinking was you could keep printing money. Look what happened to Zimbabwe. In the end, they were printing $1 trillion notes because there was so much money in circulation. In the end, of course, the currency collapsed.

45
joebama-smells 45 points ago +45 / -0

I had my eyes wide open during the financial collapse. I'm a numbers guy and that catastrophe could be seen 1,000 miles away. What I was truly horrified by was the response to high five the perpetrators, give printing money a Commie term like QE, and then throw the book at anyone who opened their mouth about it. I didn't understand the capacity they had to destroy our country.

18
conservativeyuppie 18 points ago +18 / -0

Heck, you use the term "quantitative easing" in front of most economists and they'll descend into autistic screeching. Even most of the experts there know it's a load of shit.

Swolehas 21 points ago +21 / -0

Peter Schiff is a doomer. The reason why he predicted the 08 crash is because he ALWAYS predicts crashes ALL the time. If you listen to his podcast enough you'll realize that he never has any new input. Every podcast epidsode is the exact same thing. Him rambling into a microphone and breaking off into the same tangents every single time. Never does he incorporate any new information

21
Fidget 21 points ago +21 / -0

It gets old and repetitive but that’s because he’s following basic fundamentals and applying them to whatever the latest event is.

The fundamentals are sound, though. Sort of how Dr Ron Paul was nicknamed “Dr. No” in Congress, because everything they ever voted on was unConstitutional so he’d always vote no.

Mises.org

9
Logan051361 9 points ago +9 / -0

Michael Burry is predicting a total crash across the board. Every sector.

4
Tyrone_biggums 4 points ago +4 / -0

Except he predicted the mechanism whereby the economy would implode (dirt cheap credit from the Fed and a quasi governmental agency incentivized by the state to buy up trash mortgages). So he didn’t just get lucky.

Yes his diatribes can be repetitive because his thesis is quite simple: the Fed buying up and monetizing debt cannot give rise to prosperity, and eventually, like a heroin addict who runs out of heroin, the artificially juiced economy must suffer the consequences. The problem is, the Fed has been able to prolong the inevitable for way longer than Peter Schiff ever realized was possible.

The man is not a “doomer,” really. He is a realist about the consequences of central planning / central banking and Soviet style fixing of the price of credit by the Fed.

'But I certainly see no evidence that that's the case now,' the Treasury Secretary added.

13
Cesare_Borgia 13 points ago +13 / -0

My favorite WTF fact about their inflation numbers is the owners equivalent rent thing.

In the past they'd measure the inflation in rents by you know, looking at how much average rent is. That was giving them too high a number so we've changed it to owners equivalent rent. Which means they survey some number of homeowners and ask them what they'd charge for rent were they to hypothetically rent their home out.

These aren't people planning on renting out their home so they've been doing research on what their home rents for or anything like that. It's an almost completely arbitrary number.

Interest rates were that high because the fed was actually taking the steps needed to fight the inflation.

They won't be doing that this time, because they can't. The federal government would be completely unable to service the debt if interest rates were even just 5 or 6 percent. Let alone the double digits that would be needed to fight the inflation.

In theory that's not the feds problem and they shouldn't care. But in practice....

$1,500 per head cattle tax! Beef prices will more than double. Don't blame the ranchers because it's the packers that make all the money. This will put tons of ranchers out of business, part of their green new deal plan. Enjoy your fake steak made of bugs!

How are they coming up with 6.2% when the price of everything has gone up more than 6.2%?

20
bidensmissingbrain 20 points ago +20 / -0

Because 6.2% is the federally reported number. It's basically the amount of inflation they'll admit to (after playing with the numbers to make it look as good as possible). The actual number could be much higher.

8
conservativeyuppie 8 points ago +8 / -0

I have intimate knowledge of how these numbers are generated. Nobody "plays around with the numbers," the data that feeds the CPI is just absolute garbage quality. Your output is only as good as the data you put into it. Participation in the CPI isn't mandatory, so the government basically has to go to businesses and say pretty pretty pls give us some prices and oftentimes the answer is no, so you just have to work with what you get which isn't much. I wouldn't put as much weight on the 6.2% itself as I would on the relative increase, and these price jumps are the highest they've been in decades.

3
Bigfro 3 points ago +4 / -1

I would estimate my inflation to be closer to 40-50% based on the things I purchase and how much theyve gone up in price.

Theres a weighted average of categories of different types of goods. So if beef is up 25% but weighted in the basket of goods at 10%, then the contribution would be something like 2.5%.

The biggest drivers of inflation now are used and new autos, beef, housing.

Unfortunately housing is reported as something called owners equivalent rent which is not actual rents or mortgages pid, but what homeowners would ask for rent.

The definition and measurement of inflation have both changed over the decades so the government can achieve its goals…

2

I'm not sure how they get only 6.2%, I'm up nearly 20%.

I bought a house at a great price and interest rate last year. Saving me nearly $700 a month over renting. That savings is nearly being canceled out by increased cost of everything. I was spending $33/tank a year ago and for work I need about 1 1/4 tank a week. So just in gas I've gone from about $45/week to nearly $70. My grocery budget is typically $50/week and that's hitting closer to $70.

I don't know about you folks but I'm starting to stock up on non perishable items now while the prices are still lower than what they will be
