So when YOU allow a company to basically run and control your life, it becomes the companies fault you went crazy? Got it. Facebook wouldnt be able to do shit like this if people didnt want to be controlled.

MustafaJones 70 points ago +70 / -0

This exactly. I mean it’s not hard just to stop using Facebook if it keeps sending you stuff you don’t want to see. If my TV glitched and only showed gore or something I’d just get a new TV. Why is this simple solution so difficult to apply to social media?

You put a wheel in a hamster cage, and the hamster will run on it, right? But you know what? You put the same wheel out in nature and all kinds of creatures will run on it. Mice, frogs, even snails. Some things are just fascinating and alluring

Our FireTV sets now ask "which user" every time we fire it up (no pun was intended).

I completely understand WHY. It was almost 20 years ago I wrote a major article for a major international business magazine on the subject of the dawn and future of hyper-personalization. I get it...

But I hate the new delay... We gotta' sit for 15 seconds while it churns my data to determine today's feeds.

It's irritating.

MasklessMarvel 8 points ago +8 / -0

Nutflix has you create a profile and then it recommends things based on what you watch

even if you barely start a movie and then decide it is boring

I must have clicked on the wrong thing because I started getting a bunch of gay movies on my recommends

now I have a throwaway profile for experimental views and a real one for things I know I like

10
ClaytonMagnet 10 points ago +10 / -0

That made my wife suspicious one time. My wife accidentally opened my Netflix profile and half the shows it recommended were about gays, trannies and Hitler. I have no idea how Netflix algorithms work, but they are total shit.

War_Hamster 10 points ago +10 / -0

I hang out with my ex all the time and

To be frank, i was discussing my alcoholism and withdrawal with her

She doesn't understand

For various reasons. She is half native and has never had a hangover in her entire life no matter how much she drinks. Weird.

Anyway i was having weird dreams that i couldn't distinguish from reality during withdrawal

And she said that im just schizophrenic which im not. Her phone was next to her

For months on end she would get ads for schizophrenia meds on her smart TV

So now if i want to piss her off i just say schizophrenia a few times

Funny thing is, it only works if she says it

6
MasklessMarvel 6 points ago +6 / -0

If my TV glitched and only showed gore or something I’d just get a new TV.

Can I have your old one?

people actually become addicted to facebook

it actually becomes their social life

and there are some good things about it

e.g. I HATE that my wife is on Farcebook but she is involved in a cat rescue group that uses it as a base of operations

she has found homes for a lot of cats so there is that

there are a lot of similar altruistic groups on there

as for me, I deleted all of my posts and my account a couple of years ago

i don't even think about it outside of discussions like this

5
Choomguy 5 points ago +5 / -0

I hate that people think they need facebook for these kinds of groups. People ran cat rescues just fine without facebook. I participate in a couple of activities where they organize on fakebook. Initially people directed me to the page, and I’d say, yea, i dont use fakebook. I just got a few peoples actual contact info and i hit them up. Whats funny is they are still stuck getting their info from fakebook where i onthe other hand, have actual friends i communicate with. And now im way more involved with several groups, just by virtue of making actual friends.

Fakebook is bullshit. Its not worth the brainwashing for convenience sake.

1
MasklessMarvel 1 point ago +1 / -0

unfortunately FB is the best way for them to communicate between themselves and with adopters

my wife even does "home visits" via Facebook video

i agree with your stance but FB is established and it is hard to pry people off of it

My hatred towards the app was visceral for me. I rarely actually enjoyed it but damn did I try because I thought, at the time, that my inability to enjoy it was due to the fact that I struggled so much with being sociable. Now I think it's because Facebook is a hellscape of human suffering on display and I just wasn't wise enough to recognize it. That ominous feeling of insufficiency disappeared after I deleted my page. Everyday now it becomes more and more obvious why I hated it so much but for a long time I didn't know what to say to people when they asked why I wasn't on it. I guess I could just say that it's a hell scape of human suffering on display that should make them think I'm a reasonable person, yep.

13
x79q3pb 13 points ago +13 / -0

I was years later to hop into the Facebook train. I joined in the end to talk with my family, share photos etc. But when it started to evolve into an endless sea of 'vagebooking', desperate cries for attention and just the most shitty content one could imagine, I called it a day. This is even with an extremely tight list of friends and family. I have serious concerns for the sanity of people in the hundreds or thousands of "friends".

10
_Sully_ 10 points ago +10 / -0

There is also something to say about a person's ability to understand their own feelings about a particular topic. Essentially, if you want friends then you must emulate the broken and fractured embodiment of the ideal opinion haver. A real big problem with that is it is contradictory.

You can't be all the things to all the people. In very much the same way a fictional android gets defeated by introducing a paradox to make it malfunction, a person cannot live a mentally stable life as that contradiction. They break too. There is also a feedback from that as people break down you will see a progressive break down of what that ideal opinion haver is as more and more people become the victim of the contradiction.

What would be considered a pretty insane stance to have is now mainstream and it will continue to degrade as people try to emulate it and embolden it to stick out. We are seeing a massive programing break down right before our eyes.

9
zuccherina 9 points ago +9 / -0

Wow, what you said applies to what I've been trying to see with the pandemic. There are a few people in my life who I think are going through the programming break. They're right on the cusp, so they're acting a little insane when we have any kind of philosophical discussion. I think it's because they are coming to realize what is actually going on, while trying to hold onto their previous belief system - if they change what they believe, they'll have to change how they're acting, and that will change not only how they view the world (which is terrifying honestly to go through) but how they interact with other people.

No one WANTS to live in a world where they jump through hoops because they won't get vaccinated! It's so much easier to get vaccinated. Even the unvaccinated, the most principled person, realizes this. They don't get vaccinated, though, because they have come to accept their belief, and they cannot act any other way.

It's like what Ayn Rand says in Atlas Shrugged - if you see a contradiction in nature, go to the source; contradictions don't truly exist, so you must reassess the premise. If people say they don't believe the narrative but then follow the experts...they believe the narrative.

I only use FB for the marketplace feature now, but I was on it for a short while over the summer because I had a high school reunion that was being organized using the groups function.

One thing I found suspicious, is that my profile says I'm married and the woman I'm married to, but I was getting friend suggestions, and every single one of them were 20 and 30 year old women, all from my area but no one I knew. It wasn't one or two either, it was several women, every day. I thought to myself, it's not too far fetched anymore to think they're doing some sick social experiment to see if they can drive some men to cheat. They could track the results easily by monitoring relationship statuses.

I don't know, just seemed weird.

11
MakeArdernGoAway 11 points ago +12 / -1

6
ThunderInYourHeart 6 points ago +6 / -0

It had to have been intentional. It wasn’t in the “people you may know” section. It came in the form of daily notifications that said “you have a friend suggestion” or something like that, and it was all younger women. It was clearly designed to look like a friend request notification. They wanted a married man in his late 30s to send friend requests to 20 something college girls.

5
aconcernedtroll 5 points ago +5 / -0

Hold up- the title of this post and the article is clickbait. Fb algorithm feeds people content without knowing how digitally illiterate they are. They found that lowdigital iq people interacted with FB in such a way that they saw for shocking content. So if you're a low IQ person and you follow pornstars and watch fight videos in Facebook... you're going to see more of that. This is the 'default', which to me is indicative of the default, double digit IQ of people on Facebook. Facebook is still evil, but this ain't why. Otherwise wshh needs to also stop "manipulating" the content of it's low IQ users.

3
DarkMemeDuck 3 points ago +3 / -0

^^^ This exactly. This post is extremely misleading. They aren't saying Facebook intentionally fed people with low digital skills extra violent content. It's saying those types of people didn't have the good sense to avoid those types of content and stumbled into it.

Kind of like how the craziest BS ends up on new. Is pdw forcing you to read that content? No. But if you're intentionally going there, or just too dumb to know what you're doing, you're going to find crazy stuff there.

6
zooty 6 points ago +6 / -0

Facebook is the opposite of what the internet promised.

3
easyonthefiber 3 points ago +3 / -0

The internet is great. The social media is what is ruining the internet. Remember all the small forums and larger forums where people congregated before Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, Instragram and Snapchat tookover?

Remember playing video games in 90s and 00s when we had LAN parties, even if playing online games like Quake. We'd get in a room, join the same servers and dominate because we communicated with each other. Then we'd have virtual LAN parties with Teamspeak or Ventrillo; guilds and clans formed, and a sense of comradery emerged. We still saw people in person, and it was a more personal, close-knit community.

Now, social media connects us with people across the globe who don't share the same ideals and goals. They post perfect pictures of themselves, on vacation, nice cars, nice clothes, etc. It is all fake. It is a greed and jealousy breeding ground.

2
zooty 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yep. And that's really what I'm saying. The internet gave everyone the opportunity to have their own voice and effectively be their own publisher, reaching out to the world.

Then Facebook and Google distilled that and captured it into their own little fiefdom, studiously keeping things free and fair (ish) as they grew their userbase and value according to Metcalfe's law until their hegemony was complete and then they sprung their trap.

Facebook’s entire content generation algorithm is built on toying with your emotions to keep you on the site longer

3
FromTheThirdEstate 3 points ago +3 / -0

Two years ago, Facebook researchers conducted a five-question survey designed to assess its users' digital literacy skills.

It tested users on how well they understood Facebook's app interface and terms like "tagging" someone on social media. Their score was the number of questions they answered correctly.

The studies concluded that Facebook's algorithms harmed people less conversant with technology by continually exposing them to disturbing content they didn't know how to avoid. Many of them did not know how to hide posts, unfollow pages, block friends, or report violating content. But the algorithms mistook their lack of negative feedback for approval and fed them more.

Not knowing how to use facebook is not a valid test of someone's "digital literacy" skills. I haven't a clue how to use facebook because I've never had (or wanted) an account there. And just because someone is on facebook doesn't mean they have the desire to understand all the ins and outs of the interface, even if they have the ability. So any study that assumes that knowledge of how to use facebook is an indicator of "digital literacy" is faulty from the start.

All that said, though, facebook is poison.

3
FreedomFromGovt 3 points ago +3 / -0

I came here to say what you just said. And you did it much better than I could have. Assuming the users' "digital illiteracy" is absolutely no excuse for pouring graphic, visceral smut onto anyone's feeds, let alone those who couldn't figure out how to stop it. What's the frikkin point of all the filth on a site used mainly by old people??

It was designed and engineered by the US government, who in turn are controlled by that satanic pedophiles, to overtake myspace for this purpose. Zuckerberg has no control, he is just an autist with no moral compass. You cannot "defund" Facebook because they do not require your patronage to profit and function. There is only one way to shut it down and most of you are completely inadequate for that role either mentally or physically.

I've always hated social media as well. It's a cesspool of crazies, commies, and day-drinking soccer moms.

Earlier this year, I watched The Social Dilemma, which started to help me pinpoint exactly why hate social media. Shortly after that, I did some more thinking and digging on just how awful social media is.

I finally dumped Twatter. Not a big deal because I was never on there anyway. The Reddit, and I was on it a lot.

I still haven't deleted FB, but it's no longer allowed on my phone. I've also kept Instagram. I only post to FB through Instagram and only post yarn-related things (knitting, cross stitch, crochet, weaving projects) and the occasional pictures of our cats and my brother's dog. I just keep telling myself I'm keeping them for hobby-turned-small business reasons, but that dream hasn't happened yet. And it can be done without FB or Instagram.

As insidious as Facebook is, if you deleted it from your phone it’s likely still tracking you. You have to do a clean reboot like a factory reset. I would guess...

Fair point, I hadn't thought about that. Makes sense. They're also likely tracking through Instagram too. May just demp everything while I'm off this week.

I used to use Facebook but I got rid of them. I’ve never had them on my phone.

Did someone say Fed Posts?

That's what I read the first few times: Fedposting.
