Haha. I read Sherlock Holmes as a kid. 1000 page tome. I love the Basil Rathbone movies.

Also, very good post. For too many years there has been too much emphasis on sports and not enough emphasis on developing one’s brain. Nobody knows how to think anymore. No deductive reasoning.

I read Sherlock Holmes as a kid

That's one book I go back to every few years. That and Mark Twain's travelogues. Never get old.

6
XCorneliusX 6 points ago +6 / -0

Mark Twain had a huge number of books written. Getting beyond Tom Sawyer is a myriad of other excellent books.

6
YT45 6 points ago +6 / -0

Sam Clemens aka Mark Twain elevated eloquent shit-talking to a high art form! He will always be a national treasure.

XCorneliusX 2 points ago +2 / -0

I have relatives living in Elmira, NY where the great writer had lived for a time.

NoComment 5 points ago +5 / -0

That's how we got here.

2
Steady3 2 points ago +2 / -0

Sure they do. It takes an impressive amount of brainpower to call someone a racist.

1
TheUpsetter 1 point ago +1 / -0

Ever watch the Jeremy Brent version from the 80’s. Phenomenal adaptations. I’ve read every Sherlock Holmes story dozens of times, and that show nails it perfectly.

2
DebbieinDallas 2 points ago +2 / -0

No. There was only one Sherlock Holmes. Just like there was only one James Bond. Those who come after always domed to fail.

2
TheUpsetter 2 points ago +2 / -0

You do know that Sean Connery wasn’t the first film Bond, right? And George Lazenby was better.

1
DebbieinDallas 1 point ago +1 / -0

I don’t care about technicalities. Sean Connery was the real James Bond.

All that sports shit is just pathetic. Cheering another man's accomplishments while wearing his name... Fucking pathetic. Get off your ass and build something.

29
Flptplt 29 points ago +33 / -4

Ditch professional sports entirely, it encourages our youth to worship black people.

2
Hanging_Chad [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

NHL?

12
Flptplt 12 points ago +13 / -1

Nope. They are infected too. Maybe the minority count isn't too high in that sport, but they were black lives matter supporters as well.

8
Arkham 8 points ago +10 / -2

No.. Watch UFC. It's American sport. Dana White is also based!

1
Hanging_Chad [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Is Tyron Woodley still around?

5
Jimmmyftw 5 points ago +5 / -0

Nope. Beat into retirement by the MAGA man himself. Plus Dana and Trump are boys and there's never been a drop of social justice anywhere.

0
Arkham 0 points ago +1 / -1

No sir. He's not good at UFC no more. But, Usman is fun to watch.

A "man cave" is a monument to sloth - the passive consumption of other men's endeavors. A study is a temple of knowledge.

That room is very close to what the study in my last house looked like. Except there were three times as many books. I am converting the main room in my new, smaller house to a study. I'll have a 280 square foot study, a 200 square foot kitchen, and a 280 square foot bedroom. That's it. Three rooms, plus a bathroom. Plenty of room for me. Plus the 1500 square foot shop/barn. :)

7
XCorneliusX 7 points ago +7 / -0

My home now is about 1200sq ft. Just me. Went from 9k sq to 1500 sq to an apartment for a while and now here. My front room currently serves as the study as my bookcases and books are there. Once I prepare an unused bedroom for it, I plan to make that my study. A friend here in FL has an enormous collection of books and has expressed a desire that they get homed here so he can still access it. It is in storage now. He has spent decades collecting real history books.

6
OwnaLib87 6 points ago +6 / -0

9k sq ft wtf.

2
XCorneliusX 2 points ago +2 / -0

It was an enormous house on land overlooking a river on a point. Great place, but as my family grew smaller I did not need all that space, though it was wonderful and stocked with everything. What I did not need was the cost without the need for the space. Used to entertain there as well. I earned that but it was also a labor to maintain. It was 80k a year to maintain. That is utilities, mortgage, insurance and taxes of course.

It was a point when I decided I did not need the space or cost. I sold my businesses and moved on. I guess the biggest thing was death. My mom passed around that time and her estate was a great task.

MadTrad 19 points ago +19 / -0

I had a study before I had kids. Loved smoking my pipe while reading Sherlock Holmes.

16
Save_the_Republic 16 points ago +16 / -0

My dream is to have a little library with a fireplace I can sit next to and just read and listen to the roar and crackle.

5
XCorneliusX 5 points ago +5 / -0

HD gif wallpaper with crackle sound just does not replace the real thing.

1
DebbieinDallas 1 point ago +1 / -0

I have a portable radiant heater..same thing, less mess.

15
CommanderDaddy 15 points ago +16 / -1

Sportsball is gay.

14
chungus47 14 points ago +15 / -1

The study needs guns on the wall. Mine has a G36.

3
YT45 3 points ago +3 / -0

Display some American steel, not kraut Tupperware!

1
chungus47 1 point ago +1 / -0

Actually I'd love a Garand for the wall. It's the father of the AK!

13
NvJohansson 13 points ago +13 / -0

Damned, l thought l was the only stuffy guy around with a reading / cigar lounge in his basement.

12
Dieselslacker 12 points ago +12 / -0

This is the way

10
Homemade-Soap 10 points ago +10 / -0

Or the workshop. Building stuff is equally cool.

3
MaoHadOnly1Testicle 3 points ago +3 / -0

Came here to say this

1
Hanging_Chad [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Is the artificial shortage of lumber over yet?

10
n00tch 10 points ago +10 / -0

Grown men worshipping other grown men who are good at playing children's games.. fucking pathetic.

1
DebbieinDallas 1 point ago +1 / -0

Agreed. I have always thought watching grown up men chase a ball was really stupid. Golf. And football is even stupider because all the men jump on top of each other. Basketball is running from one end to the other and waving your arms around. And baseball is sooooo slowwwwww.

Give me a man who does stuff instead of watching other men do stuff.

8
Stanwyk74 8 points ago +9 / -1

Professional corporate sports has destroyed the white american man

8
Eatinglue 8 points ago +9 / -1

I…I have both. They’re small, but I have a fooseball/workout/TV room and a pretty sweet office. Is it too much to ask for both?

Edit: TV part is only courtesy of the open seas.

1
XCorneliusX 1 point ago +1 / -0

I would add a TV myself, but more for access if I am watching a Trump stream and want to be in there.

8
Seruna_Kanus 8 points ago +8 / -0

Yup, a robust study is a much better backdrop at that.

8
JennaDenver 8 points ago +8 / -0

Lady pede here. Can confirm.

2
Hanging_Chad [S] 2 points ago +4 / -2

Any relation to BenDover?

7
YT45 7 points ago +7 / -0

Mine has a bookcase stocked with history materials, a desk on which I build models (currently working on a B-17 with a custom pinup of my beautiful wife on the nose) and clean guns, and some extra chairs and plenty of floor space for my kids to play while they hang out with Daddy. No TV in that room. The walls are decorated with family pictures, a few career-related items, and pictures of classic aircraft because I’m a nerd for that kind of thing.

5
glow-operator-2-0 5 points ago +5 / -0

i prefer a workshop

5
JeremiahKassin 5 points ago +6 / -1

I just realized my living room kind of IS my study. Only thing missing is MOAR BOOKS!

4
sorossockpuppet2 4 points ago +4 / -0

That man cave is positively hideous jesus christ. I can just taste the bud light aroma in my mouth from that basement man cave. That study looks so fucking cool, imagine reading your grandchildren books that impacted you as a kid, and in turn it resonates with them. I'll be honest, I'll probably never get rid of my ps4. Only because my wife bought it for me when I was at a serious low point in my life and it got me through some hard times along with prayer and family. I'm not a soy boy, but damn I'm gonna keep that ps4 in my study and make sure I play it every once in a while. Makes me feel like a kid again when I'm not having to do adult things and nobody immediately needs me. There's definitely a balance to electronics and I think I'm great at balancing my time out. Haha I started off defending the study and yet, I can't dismiss everything from the man cave. We all have our sentimental shit from our past lives, entertainment we could never let go - and then covid hit and we realized a lot of this stuff doesn't matter. And those who will never let their media addictions go will never see what's going on and never be aware of what's coming.

NoComment 4 points ago +4 / -0

I myself partake in a computer lab at home.

4
Deporter 4 points ago +4 / -0

THIS is the key. 🔑

4
WVboi 4 points ago +4 / -0

Mine is a "gun room". We're way past that lol

3
Skeeter_N_CO 3 points ago +5 / -2

I have an office for reading and working. I have a man cave to escape. I don't watch a ton of sports besides football. But i love having a giant theater in my basement for movie nights with the family and entertaining friends with the occasional game. You can do both.

4
Hanging_Chad [S] 4 points ago +5 / -1

I have a j/o chamber

TMI

4
Skeeter_N_CO 4 points ago +4 / -0

You have a jack off chamber??? Wtf is that even??

4
6
Skeeter_N_CO 6 points ago +6 / -0

I'm not clicking that shit...

2
Hanging_Chad [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

It's safe for work 👌🏻

2
XCorneliusX 2 points ago +2 / -0

It was safe. It is something I want to make.

2
n00tch 2 points ago +2 / -0

That is badass.. Nice work!

2
Hanging_Chad [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

(not actually mine lol)

1
n00tch 1 point ago +1 / -0

Still badass.. nice find!

3
scarasyte 3 points ago +3 / -0

I was hoping the man cave phase would die off soon

3
Right_of_Sinner 3 points ago +3 / -0

This is fantastic. I have 4 mini libraries in my house. All dedicated to different subjects from comics to philosophy to the trades.

3
cosmos411 3 points ago +3 / -0

I've always hated the term "man cave". It depicts men as knuckle dragging troglodytes. If it has to be called something other than a "study" then how about "the man's lair", or does that imply too much "toxic masculinity"?

2
Hanging_Chad [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

men's den?

2
cosmos411 2 points ago +2 / -0

Perfect!

3
GrouchyMarxist 3 points ago +3 / -0

Amen!

2
Star_Commander 2 points ago +2 / -0

Funny thing is the "man cave" used to be a descriptor of the garage where the man would make stuff. Delusional morons infected by the NFL converted it into a theater lounge.

I have a well stocked library and I'm working on the garage getting up to snuff.

2
HowdyModi2 2 points ago +2 / -0

Where do you guys find so much space?

2
trumpreallywon 2 points ago +2 / -0

The study should include a proper ping pong and foosball table though.

1
Hanging_Chad [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Don't forget the billiards table

2
pede-o-saurus 2 points ago +2 / -0

man cave < study < armory

2
556y308 2 points ago +2 / -0

I wanted to be so cool when I was younger lolololololol now I want a library.

1
MullyGrubber 1 point ago +1 / -0

Why not have both and add a workshop to it as well? This is America, dammit.

1
Truglow 1 point ago +1 / -0

Keep the man cave and ditch all forms of fool ball.

-10
neokulak -10 points ago +2 / -12

Yeah, like we're going to teach our boys to clean guns and drink beer in my "study."
We're watching the game in the study.

Eggheads need to think more about how to make friends and keep them.

10
jalopnik 10 points ago +10 / -0

And which poorly-educated black ball grabber criminal are you encouraging your children to idolize?

-6
neokulak -6 points ago +3 / -9

Dennis Rodman, Tim Tebow, and Jackie Fucking Robinson you fag.

Guys who hate sports hate sports because other men can't stand to be around them.

8
XCorneliusX 8 points ago +8 / -0

I for one do not hate sports. I chose not to patron the leagues that hate us.

5
YT45 5 points ago +5 / -0

I don’t hate sports. I love baseball and like football. Never got into basketball. Can’t make heads or tails of hockey. Fuck soccer.

However, I can’t stand a large number of the shitbirds who play pro sports, or most of the owners of corporate pro sports. I also choose not to give my money to groups that falsely accuse me of racism and call me “privileged” for the color of my skin when even their lowest-payed player makes more for a single minute of game time—even if his ass never leaves the bench—than I could dream of making in a year, and those same players routinely get away with DUI, aggravated assault, rape, etc.
