So if you told me this morning that Jimmy Stuart was going to make me cry today, I would have thought you nuts. WOW that was powerful. Thank you for sharing.

I'm not crying you are crying. Put my 15 year old lab down this year. Sucks. My hunting dog is not far and thats going to be even worse. Im sorry fren, no good response except to say I am sorry and I know what you are going through

Mamapedia 18 points ago +19 / -1

Damn. My 2 old setters are gone, very sad. The special connection between dogs and humans, forged over tens of thousands of years, is a beautiful example of honest mutuality. We shamelessly give and take with each other and are all the better for it.

Sorry.

Yea man. Setters are a special breed. I have red setters and when my current male is gone I will getting another.

Watching these old men, long gone, their culture never to return, it makes you realize what is truly lost.

I hope the OP gets a chance to watch the video to know all dog owners have had the same sad time(s) but wouldn't trade the great times we shared with our Good Doggos

The loss of a friend that always hurts the most. The only friend that never let's you down and always fills you with happiness, is the one that walks on four and wags their tail when their name is called.

We lost one of ours to cancer earlier this year, that was a very hard thing to go though. Our 6yr old granddaughter just the other day, when I called our remaining 3 in and closed the door suddenly "you forgot one!" then went on to say that "Pasley was still outside, flying around in the sky". God bless the little ones, I had to give her such a big hug for that.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Damn man, every time I read this I tear up a bit. Yet I always have to read it when I see it, it's perfect

10
cosmos411 10 points ago +10 / -0

The original post brought tears to my eyes. Hurley has such a gentle face. I hope he's having a blast up there, playing with all our long lost furry friends. We will all meet one day.

9
Paul_Revere 9 points ago +9 / -0

"We will all meet one day."

Amen to that.

11
malthael 11 points ago +11 / -0

Reading this always causes me to tear up, considering that I lost my 16 year old rescue last year 2 weeks before Christmas it sucked and qas a very gray Christmas for me since someone was no longer there.

To the Op, your buddy looks like a wonderful good Boi sorry for your loss.

7
cosmos411 7 points ago +7 / -0

I know exactly what you mean, I have the same reaction. I only heard about Rainbow Bridge when I had to say goodbye to my Golden years ago and the vet sent me the poem in a card. Losing a furry friend is very difficult. I'm sorry that Christmas now reminds you of that pain. Be well friend.

2
malthael 2 points ago +2 / -0

Same for me with the vet card, when my first boy died and they sent me a card with his death certificate and it had the Rainbow bridge poem on the back. I never cry to big of a man to cry but ill say now that was the hardest in my life I ever did even worse than when he passed....

And the sad part is it does not get easier with more animals if anything it gets harder, last year like I said I lost my 16 year old rescue last year "I still feel it was my fault" but there is nothing I can do, it just hurts knowing he is not here anymore.

But I must carry on I have more little guys to care for that bring a smile to my face during these dark days.

Lost my two pups a year ago, only a few weeks apart. (14 and 12 years old). I still have moments now where I'm not afraid to say I shed a tear or many. I miss the welcome home, miss them charging up the stairs to greet me when I get up in the morning, even miss the morning walks half-awake in the cold and rain.

I'm still struggling with the guilt in making that final decision for them both. I know I was sparing them suffering, but perhaps I could have had one more good day with them. But at the point they were both at, perhaps better a week early than a day late.

Thinking of you fren, remember your pup with fondness.

13
IHeartMyDoggy 13 points ago +14 / -1

By you sparing them the suffering showed the true love you had for them. We always want more time with them, but in the end, we must always do what is best for them and you did that.

"By you sparing them the suffering showed the true love you had for them. We always want more time with them, but in the end, we must always do what is best for them and you did that."

Have had to do that more times than I care to remember. You're right, of course, it would be terribly selfish to prolong their suffering. But by God, it's hard.

Still, I know that we will all be together again.

2
Erkme73 2 points ago +2 / -0

It sounds heartless, but, it is better to put them down a month too early than a day too late.

21
StonePhilosophy 21 points ago +21 / -0

Oh man just remember the happy moments he gave you. I lost my pup not long ago and it still gets to me. Some of them leave lasting memories that you can cherish forever.

7

I hope hurley and my girl daphney have fun wherever they are together. Sorry to see that. I have regrets about the last couple years with mine and not spending enough time with her. She was tough to take care of at almost 17.

Unconditional love, both ways ... and you're both better off because of the time you had. I feel for you with all my heart.
