Geralt_of_Rivia1 7 points ago +7 / -0

The cost of used anvils has nearly quadrupled over the last 2 years with new production doubing. what was a 1 dollar a pound Anvil is now sitting at around 4, and I easily see them in the 10 dollar a pound range for new rather than 5 or 6

I have a 140lb Vulcan arm and hammer that I borrowed from the Navy, it would easily sell for 700 bucks on Ebay. That is insane.

the have plenty of stock, anvils are really hard to move *badum tshh*

Throughout the Midwest. Though that branding looks a bit different from the one I know locally.

Edit: I looked it up, that logo is indicative of the stores throughout Penna/Jersey/Connecticut...the East, not the Midwest. Though there are Acme stores in the Midwest.

14
chris82tk 14 points ago +15 / -1

Yep there are 2 distinct Acme grocery store companies in the US, one is mainly in New Jersey and the other is exclusively in Ohio. They are unrelated aside from the name. The word "Acme" was a common company name due to phone books listing businesses in alphabetical border, using that word was a way to guarantee you were at the top or near it.

4
BadManOrange 4 points ago +4 / -0

The one on the east coast bought out a lot of old A&P stores when they went out of business. So they're spread around the whole tristate area these days. They're owned by Albertsons.

1
Droford 1 point ago +1 / -0

We have an Acme here where I live in Maryland. By far they were even before the Pandemic the most expensive grocery store around. I used to joke last year when other stores had stocking issues they still had everything because they're good 50% higher on everything and no one was desperate enough to pay their prices. Now half the store is on 75% clearance (I got some Ice cream for .75 the other day) probably because the stuff is near its expiration/sell by dates and they..lol..still can't sell it cause people realize it's been in there for probably well over a year (I by near or past expiration food all the time at another store that only sells that so it doesn't bother me)

5
MasklessMarvel 5 points ago +6 / -1

they are only in desert areas

their primary customers are coyotes

Were I grew up in Northern Michigan there's a little one blinker-town named Acme in near Traverse City.

Yup, that's why they're so much fun to replace!

This one is perfectly targeted in the cat food section

24
silentmajority2020 24 points ago +27 / -3

Can't speak for cat owners, but now is a great time to start making your own healthy dog food. Rice, veggies, meat (fat and left over's you'd normally throw away when trimming steaks, etc), organs (liver, heart, etc). Take control of your own life and keep your 4-legged friend healthy too!

10
D-Dub 10 points ago +10 / -0

My dogs love it when I make chicken dumplin soup because I set an additional pot to the side and only put dog safe ingredients in it.

2
Forbidden_outcast 2 points ago +2 / -0

That’s a food I will feed my dog and she’s always ready for it- homemade chicken and dumplings. I have to tie up her long cocker spaniel ears though. (It’s the one time she’ll actually let me do it.)

10
Cesare_Borgia 10 points ago +10 / -0

Making homemade cat food is more complicated than dog food I've read. Cats have very specific dietary needs, especially for things like taurine.

11
brotatofarmer 11 points ago +12 / -1

Every fucking energy drink out there has taurine in it for some reason. Just start pouring Monster into your home made cat food.

Forbidden_outcast 3 points ago +3 / -0

Or the howling they do all night long? Can you imagine if they were super charged while when doing that?

Gonna need to pile my entire shoe collection next to the bed, bc one or three is no longer gonna be enough to throw at them.

7
9x10again 7 points ago +7 / -0

Exactly.

6
Timecop1776 6 points ago +6 / -0

Making home made cat food is more difficult. But mainly because cats have a harder time transitioning to it and it takes sometimes months.

The best thing any cat owner out there can do though is stop feeding your cat low quality kibble and feed them mostly on wet canned food.

5
Froynlavenfroynlaven 5 points ago +5 / -0

And the wet canned food is exactly what's becoming scarce. My area hasn't had things that bad as far as empty shelves go, but when I go to petsmart it's barren.

Forbidden_outcast 0 points ago +1 / -1

We have one cat has never- and won’t even consider- a food or treat that is not dry and crunchy. Won’t touch human food, either. She was born in the house- and somehow just got trained that way.

Our kid’s cat, that she got Christmas 2020- is just the opposite. Kid came running through the house the other day chasing it- bc she turned her head and her cat swiped an entire Xaxby’s chicken tender off her plate and took off running. I was laughing so hard, couldn’t help it- but also don’t want cats trying to eat people food or in the kitchen at all- so she’s got some work to do there. (This cat had never done that before.)

We never did wet food bc cats raised on it become way too obsessive over it. Hollering at you at 5am to get up to feed them and hollering anytime they hear the can opener. (And won’t stop, and get more and more desperate and insane, pawing at you, and tripping you up under your feet.). It’s comparable to an entire family of Guinea pigs that hear you stir for the first time in a morning! It’s obnoxious as hell, lol.

But we do get the vet recommended dry food. They’re small- so it’s affordable. They have at least quit hacking up all over the place after switching to it. That’s unpleasant scenario has stopped happening.

1
Paul_Revere 1 point ago +1 / -0

"We never did wet food bc cats raised on it become way too obsessive over it."

Yours, maybe. Not ours.

1
Forbidden_outcast 1 point ago +1 / -0

I didn’t mean that as a put down, but just my experience growing up. We always had cats, and they obsessed over canned food.

Finally had a vet recommend dry food (that message actually went around the pet and veterinarian community for a few years, probably around the late 1990’s- early 2000’s)

So we switched, and the new cats we had have never acted the way that the others did.

They got fed when we get eat, and they sit and patiently wait. They look at us, but no craziness.

Maybe it was something we were doing- but it has worked much better on the dry food.

2
FiresideRant 2 points ago +3 / -1

preservatives, appetite enhancers, etc. are not just used in human food.

Making your own food for your cat or dog will benefit their health (assuming you make it properly, etc.)

21
MrsBarker 21 points ago +21 / -0

We're having trouble finding canned pet food in the store as well.

10
TheMadManDidItAgain 10 points ago +10 / -0

immigrant food..

2
Forbidden_outcast 2 points ago +2 / -0

Our store has had bare canned cat food shelves since the beginning of the pandemic. It doesn’t even have ups and downs. It’s just bare.

They’ll load up what little they do get, and it’s purchased right away.

2
Paul_Revere 2 points ago +2 / -0

There are two grocery stores and a pet shop in our area. I find that if I visit each one of them when I shop for groceries, at least one will have enough cat food to get us through the week.

Wang-Mart's shelves have been bare for months.

2
TrappedRed_in_blue 2 points ago +2 / -0

I had stocked up some before all this but its been so long without the brand I usually get, and it is one supposedly made in America too! I purposely chose US manufactured cat food to avoid this hassle and its been crazy trying to find even crappy blue buffalo brand!

I only feed my cat grain free food, my cat used to get bloody poop that stank horribly until I figured out probiotics for cats was the key to stopping that.

2
MasklessMarvel 2 points ago +4 / -2

3

Compared to around here (north FL), that shelf is stocked well! Our little guy likes the Friskies “Extra Gravy” cans, and those have not been available for a couple months now.

1
DoYouLikeFishsticks 1 point ago +1 / -0

Hey I’m not sure what flavors your cat likes, but it seems like they have some in stock on Chewy! In packs of 24 too. I’d check it out. Their shipping is really fast

1
DoYouLikeFishsticks 1 point ago +1 / -0

Actually, only the Turkey flavor that I can see but still! Not a bad price either

3
DeathArrow 3 points ago +3 / -0

Yes. Ours loved Friskies Outdoor. Now we can't find it and it's almost the same price as gold on amazon.

I work in the pet food industry, for a high end pet food distributor. When covid started there was a major aluminum shortage, so a lot of pet food companies that deal with a lot of canned food immediately started shorting product and its been going on for 2 years now. The only manufacturers that never skipped a beat with their canned foods where the highest quality and most expensive brands, because I believe they were willing to incur higher cost for the supplies required, where the value brands could not afford to do so while maintaining a value price.

This could also be compounded by a labor shortage, as if you know anything about pet food manufacturers, if you ever work in one you will usually be offered all of the overtime that you want. Employees don't last and they are always short staffed. If by chance this particular company also implemented a vax mandate then a massive labor shortage may also be happening.

3
justicein2020 3 points ago +3 / -0

not exactly a "shortage"

china is fucking us on aluminum. because we fucked them on steel.

and our current "leader" is a bag of shit in a suit. so it won't be getting fixed anytime soon.

1
MasklessMarvel 1 point ago +2 / -1

The only manufacturers that never skipped a beat with their canned foods where the highest quality and most expensive brands

which is great if you want to spend $10/can on filet mignon or imported salmon cat food

1
FreshFriggy 1 point ago +1 / -0

You wouldn't believe how much some people spend on their pets diet. The big thing now is a 'raw diet' and they spend a shit ton to feed them a strictly carnivorous diet. Hell, even kibble, a 27 pound bag of zignature kangaroo will cost you $90

1
SweetCheeses 1 point ago +1 / -0

What do you feed your pets? Just curious.

2
FreshFriggy 2 points ago +2 / -0

I don't have pets, but when I did I fed them 'Victor'. Victor is an excellent pet food, before I switched to that I fed them 'Fromm'. Never feed them cheap value brand foods.

1
SweetCheeses 1 point ago +1 / -0

You need a dog.

6
monkeycat2010 6 points ago +6 / -0

I have been hoarding pet food for 6 months or so. I saw this one coming and started early. I buy every time some comes in stock. Same thing for litter.

2
Paul_Revere 2 points ago +2 / -0

"I have been hoarding pet food for 6 months or so. I saw this one coming and started early. I buy every time some comes in stock. Same thing for litter."

Same here. I treat pet food as if it were ammo.

1
DoYouLikeFishsticks 1 point ago +1 / -0

I’ve been doing this slowly too and now I’m definitely doing it more. I leave a couple on the shelf but I’m definitely buying a majority if i see it in store. And I’ve been buying online too. I’m going to start doing it with litter now

2
monkeycat2010 2 points ago +2 / -0

It sounds harsh to be doing it but my fur babies are what keep me sane.

Their unconditional love is what makes the insanity bearable.

I am not going to let them down.

I buy every chance I get. Litter is not necessarily in short supply but as with everything in this plandemic of murder, I am not taking any risks.

Worst case scenario I have a surplus of litter that I bought when my dollar had more purchasing power, instead of waiting for the price to go up next week. Best case scenario is that I won't have to buy litter for a long time.

2
DoYouLikeFishsticks 2 points ago +2 / -0

I agree with you! My baby boy is the best and I don’t want him to go without. I don’t care if I’m overbuying because even if stock comes back, I won’t have to buy for a while.

I was using kitten litter and was starting to have a little trouble finding it at petsmart so I’ve been ordering it online anyway

5
zooty 5 points ago +5 / -0

I cook for our dog (🙄), but the cat food has been an issue for about a year, even at Wegmans. I've had to buy those damn "feasts" at 99¢ a can at a small, independent grocery store, when they'd be 69¢ or so everywhere else.
