It’s a real holiday in the South. Or at least when I was in school there. And when I was in 5th grade, I had a substitute teacher, a young man named Bob Lee, who told us he was a descendant of Robert E. Lee.

You need a core principle, a motivation that your own imminent death and destruction is a worthy sacrifice. Trade deals, voting imbalances in the legislature, access to commodities won't do it. You have to give soldiers a purpose. I firmly believe that the overwhelming majority of the rank and file Union soldiers marched to end the abomination of slavery. You see it in their letters home.

Actually, it was rice more than cotton that demanded slaves. Rice is grown in deep water and harvesting it was extremely difficult. On top of that, mosquitos were common and most of the slaves that worked the rice fields ended up getting malaria. Before long, it was noticed that white slaves tended to die from malaria while black slaves didn't. And thus the black slave trade was born.

Robert E Lee is a notable figure of history and did work to unify the country post-civil war and is(was?) the only enemy combatant to have his picture in the halls of West Point. Canceling him isn’t a good idea, he should be studied, perhaps for the reason that he was on the losing side.

Going back to Lee, by and large, he did his part. The CSA held Richmond until shortly before the surrender at Appomattox. It was the CSA getting defeated elsewhere, such as Tennessee, Atlanta, Vicksburg, New Orleans, etc. that made the CSA’s defeat inevitable. Moreover, Lee was even able to take the offensive and attack Union territory in campaigns that culminated in battles at Antietam and Gettysburg.

Lee had fought under Scott during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), and he revealed to his former commander the depth of his struggle. Whatever his principles, he still went to war to preserve the right to own other human beings as slaves. And don't give me some bullshit about how the south wasn't fighting for slavery. There are always multiple factors that go into a war, and I'll grant you that the rank and file confederate soldier didn't run headlong into a bagonet charge for someone else's right to own slaves. But if the south had won slavery wouldn't have ended any time soon.
The south continued to push segregation, the KKK, and other stupid bullshit for the next 100 years after the war was over, which is why race hustlers like Jesse Jackson, Ibram X Kendi, the NY Times, and the entire Congressional Black Caucus have jobs today. Fuck the confederacy. They couldn't accept that they fucking lost and killed hundreds of thousands of young Americans in the process. Their absolute commitment to subjugating their fellow man delegitimized everything we face now in terms of stopping actual tyranny in the eyes of most otherwise patriotic Americans. We hesitate to take meaningful action because we know that the radical left can just say we're out to enslave blacks again, or some other nonsense. But Lee opposed the secession. He took up his command because the Union was coming. And that's all it boiled down to for most people.
And the Union wasn't coming to free the slaves. That wouldn't until years later, when Lincoln finally got around to making the Emancipation Proclamation, and that was an act of war--the north wouldn't abolish slavery in its own borders until after the war (the December after Juneteenth).
I agree with the first two paragraphs entirely, and I agree that ending slavery was not a national interest for the US or for Lincoln as a practical end. Lincoln's first desire was to preserve the Union. All true. But a truth that is often overlooked by historians looking back at all wars is that the national strategic mission is usually not the same thing that motivates people to voluntarily line up shoulder to shoulder and march/run into a hail of rifle fire and grapeshot, much less continue to do so while people are getting blown apart all around you. You need a core principle, a motivation that your own imminent death and destruction is a worthy sacrifice. Trade deals, voting imbalances in the legislature, access to commodities won't do it. You have to give soldiers a purpose. I firmly believe that the overwhelming majority of the rank and file Union soldiers marched to end the abomination of slavery. You see it in their letters home.
Union solders motivated to end slavery was indeed a real thing, but until the Emancipation Proclamation the war did nothing to free anyone. The sentiment certainly existed, but simple reunification would not have changed it. The Emancipation Proclamation dramatically changed recruitment because it did make the war about slavery. Before then, lots of people were lining up to march into rifle fire and grapeshot because they were pressed into service. After, when the war actually became about ending slavery, many more people were eager to join.
So what motivated people to join the Confederate army? Most people did not own slaves, and there were people who opposed the secession and slavery who took up arms for the Confederacy. Why were they fighting? For them, the secession had happened regardless of what they thought about it, and no matter what they thought about it the Union was bringing war.
Here's some advice ignore the radical left. And don't throw heroes like Lee under the bus because you think it is politically expedient at the time. The left will never let up and will attack you no matter what you do. Right now it's Lee next it's Washington and Jefferson.
I agree with this in principle, that the left will and does accuse us of racism no matter what we do. But we need allies. Most people who haven't gotten red-pilled yet don't want to think of themselves as supporting racism and slavery. This is why opposition to CRT is gaining strength, because they see that we're actually the ones opposing racism. Celebrating Lee as a hero next to Jefferson and Washington isn't the way to get them to join the fight, in my opinion. I think it's right and fair to recognize Lee as a masterful general, and a deeply conflicted man who was a product of his time. National pride in the US as a country was an outcome of the Civil War, not its cause. Most, including those in the Union fought for their states (in both practice and principle), not the country to which their state belonged.
Slavery has been practiced by every culture. It is not the original sin of America. It is just an easy target that people who hate our country harp on. I hate that it happened, but I am numb to it. Life is hard. I respect Lee though I disagreed with him. His writings show him an honorable man. He was a man for the ages.
I too agree that the fact that America had slavery has been massively overused by the left to the point that more and more people are becoming numb to it. And, yes, every culture on earth has owned slaves at some point. Blaming America for it in perpetuity is idiotic.
