I’m southern, was raised to be proud of where I’m from, have suffered through countless interactions with insufferable northerners gawking at me being southern, and at this point I support southern statues purely as a fuck you.

Competition breeds excellence, and Lee gave them a run for their money.

The south suffered economically forever — which is what most southerners were willing to fight to prevent, slavery was just in the details of how the economic collapse would happen.

Lee is counted as an American Veteran, as are all confederate soldiers. Look into how many CSA soldiers are buried in Arlington Cemetery, with full military honors.

IIRC Congress fully recognized the CSA veterans as being American vets for just over 100 years now.

Never forget Lincoln was one of the worst Presidents in our entire country's history.

Anyone who knows the Civil War (not you, whoever is reading this you are a retard) knows that the Republicans were the party of urbanites and the Democrats were the party of farmers. Maryland was the first state to remove the need to own land to vote and all the northern states followed suit. With an influx of population both in voters and from the Industrial Revolution they basically took permanent control of the House of Representatives.

The South then had to abide by all the laws the North was passing without any objections. This includes all the anti-competitive bills that forced the South to sell both cash crops and food to the North at-cost. You didn't think about this because Jews brainwashed you into thinking people cared about slavery.

Only the top 1% could afford to own slaves (just like nowadays). When they saw their people literally being taxed without representation the South seceded and sent the North a word-for-word copy of the Declaration of Independence citing all the evil shit Lincoln and the Republicans did. In response, Lincoln invade a foreign country purely because he was an Illinois politician and if you ever tell an Illinois politician you aren't giving them free tax money they turn into rabid animals.

Lincoln cared so much about freeing the slaves he didn't free a single slave until after the war. During the war zero slave owners were killed. Only peasants farming for themselves were murdered by Lincolns rapist army led by Sherman (who didn't command a single soldier who didn't have Syphilis). After the war he freed the slaves and then compensated the slave owners $300 per slave. Adjusting for inflation that's $4,000 in today's devalued dollar.

And to this day every retard with a pulse has the right to vote and every politician has to pander to the lowest common denominator, simply because people who aren't invested in the country's success or continued existence have the right to demand free welfare money, and politicians have to give those genetic defects free welfare money or they don't get elected. All because Lincoln and the urbanite Republicans tried to game the system.

Lee had family, friends, and neighbors on both sides. He was put in the shitty position of having his principles conflict with eachother, and having to pick between them, knowing all the while that whichever choice he made would alienate people he loved at best, and put him on opposite sides of a firefight with them at worst.

Robert E Lee was once seen as a conciliatory figure, as he was greatly respected by both sides of the war and personally opposed slavery but fought for the South out of principle and loyalty to his state, so both sides found admirable qualities in him.

Actually, it was rice more than cotton that demanded slaves. Rice is grown in deep water and harvesting it was extremely difficult. On top of that, mosquitos were common and most of the slaves that worked the rice fields ended up getting malaria. Before long, it was noticed that white slaves tended to die from malaria while black slaves didn't. And thus the black slave trade was born.

Robert E Lee is a notable figure of history and did work to unify the country post-civil war and is(was?) the only enemy combatant to have his picture in the halls of West Point. Canceling him isn’t a good idea, he should be studied, perhaps for the reason that he was on the losing side.

Everyone shits on Lee for being on the losing side, but he was holding out against a more well equipped, numerically superior, logistically superior, and technologically superior force.

Moreover, the Confederacy’s goal was not to defeat the Union entirely, but inflict enough casualties and hold out long enough for foreign intervention and/or sue for peace.

Going back to Lee, by and large, he did his part. The CSA held Richmond until shortly before the surrender at Appomattox. It was the CSA getting defeated elsewhere, such as Tennessee, Atlanta, Vicksburg, New Orleans, etc. that made the CSA’s defeat inevitable. Moreover, Lee was even able to take the offensive and attack Union territory in campaigns that culminated in battles at Antietam and Gettysburg.

Robert E. Lee resigns from U.S. Army after Virginia secedes from Union

Colonel Robert E. Lee resigns from the United States army two days after he was offered command of the Union army and three days after his native state, Virginia, seceded from the Union.

Lee opposed secession, but he was a loyal son of Virginia. His official resignation was only one sentence, but he wrote a longer explanation to his friend and mentor, General Winfield Scott, later that day. Lee had fought under Scott during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), and he revealed to his former commander the depth of his struggle. Lee spoke with Scott on April 18, and explained that he would have resigned then “but for the struggle it has cost me to separate myself from a service to which I have devoted the best years of my life and all the ability I possess.” Lee expressed gratitude for the kindness shown him by all in the army during his 25-year service, but Lee was most grateful to Scott. “To no one, general, have I been as much indebted as to yourself for uniform kindness and consideration…” He concluded with this poignant sentiment: “Save in the defense of my native State, I never desire again to draw my sword.”

I knew his great grandson or his grandson here in Tennessee. He was homeless and had a stick maze near a burger king he built himself near a creek. When we would go to the BK he would tell us stories when he was on the beaches of Normandy. He had to hide under bodies when Germans would be searching for people.

My great-great-great grandfather was a 1st lieutenant for the CSA. He was 21 years old when at the battle of Fredericksburg, while giving commands to his men, a musket ball entered his mouth and exited his neck just below his right ear. He was convalescent for 6 months, but returned to the line of duty. Later on I the war, his younger brother would enter the conflict at 17 yo and suffer a grievous injury when some shell shrapnel annihilated the bottom right side of his rib cage. Lee was undoubtedly a gifted general and leader of men, and a man of principle. But he chose the wrong side. Whatever his principles, he still went to war to preserve the right to own other human beings as slaves. And don't give me some bullshit about how the south wasn't fighting for slavery. There are always multiple factors that go into a war, and I'll grant you that the rank and file confederate soldier didn't run headlong into a bagonet charge for someone else's right to own slaves. But if the south had won slavery wouldn't have ended any time soon.

The south continued to push segregation, the KKK, and other stupid bullshit for the next 100 years after the war was over, which is why race hustlers like Jesse Jackson, Ibram X Kendi, the NY Times, and the entire Congressional Black Caucus have jobs today. Fuck the confederacy. They couldn't accept that they fucking lost and killed hundreds of thousands of young Americans in the process. Their absolute commitment to subjugating their fellow man delegitimized everything we face now in terms of stopping actual tyranny in the eyes of most otherwise patriotic Americans. We hesitate to take meaningful action because we know that the radical left can just say we're out to enslave blacks again, or some other nonsense. I'm glad the south lost and that slavery was abolished shortly after.

But Lee opposed the secession. He took up his command because the Union was coming. And that's all it boiled down to for most people.

And the Union wasn't coming to free the slaves. That wouldn't until years later, when Lincoln finally got around to making the Emancipation Proclamation, and that was an act of war--the north wouldn't abolish slavery in its own borders until after the war (the December after Juneteenth).

I agree with the first two paragraphs entirely, and I agree that ending slavery was not a national interest for the US or for Lincoln as a practical end. Lincoln's first desire was to preserve the Union. All true. But a truth that is often overlooked by historians looking back at all wars is that the national strategic mission is usually not the same thing that motivates people to voluntarily line up shoulder to shoulder and march/run into a hail of rifle fire and grapeshot, much less continue to do so while people are getting blown apart all around you. You need a core principle, a motivation that your own imminent death and destruction is a worthy sacrifice. Trade deals, voting imbalances in the legislature, access to commodities won't do it. You have to give soldiers a purpose. I firmly believe that the overwhelming majority of the rank and file Union soldiers marched to end the abomination of slavery. You see it in their letters home.

Union solders motivated to end slavery was indeed a real thing, but until the Emancipation Proclamation the war did nothing to free anyone. The sentiment certainly existed, but simple reunification would not have changed it. The Emancipation Proclamation dramatically changed recruitment because it did make the war about slavery. Before then, lots of people were lining up to march into rifle fire and grapeshot because they were pressed into service. After, when the war actually became about ending slavery, many more people were eager to join.

So what motivated people to join the Confederate army? Most people did not own slaves, and there were people who opposed the secession and slavery who took up arms for the Confederacy. Why were they fighting? For them, the secession had happened regardless of what they thought about it, and no matter what they thought about it the Union was bringing war.

I agree with this in principle, that the left will and does accuse us of racism no matter what we do. But we need allies. Most people who haven't gotten red-pilled yet don't want to think of themselves as supporting racism and slavery. This is why opposition to CRT is gaining strength, because they see that we're actually the ones opposing racism. Celebrating Lee as a hero next to Jefferson and Washington isn't the way to get them to join the fight, in my opinion. I think it's right and fair to recognize Lee as a masterful general, and a deeply conflicted man who was a product of his time. National pride in the US as a country was an outcome of the Civil War, not its cause. Most, including those in the Union fought for their states (in both practice and principle), not the country to which their state belonged.

I too agree that the fact that America had slavery has been massively overused by the left to the point that more and more people are becoming numb to it. And, yes, every culture on earth has owned slaves at some point. Blaming America for it in perpetuity is idiotic. But I'm very proud that we were the first nation in history where people marched into battle, sacrificing their lives by the tens of thousands, and killing thousands more of their countrymen, and even their relatives, to free other people. Men have gone to war to free themselves countless times. But we were the first to do it for others.
