This reminds me of marvel’s depiction of Valhalla vs wakanda. They go out of their way to show Valhalla, the mythical realm of the white Norse gods, as overtly multicultural. But wakanda an overtly racially pure unironically utopian ethnostate.

It’s just bizarre

Incredible observation, I never realized this.

Probably because I watched black panther once and decided I'd never watch it again.

9

I couldn't even make it the whole way through.

swifty123456 9 points ago +10 / -1

black panther is extremely racist! his sister says you brought me another WHITE BOY!

that is where is hut it off!

extremely racist shit is allowed

blackish the tv show is the most vile racist shit ever!

my mom used to watch it then i told her it is the most vile racist shit! she said no. so i watched an episode with her

and every time they say something racist all i did was repeat the lines but switching black and white!

then she realised how racist it was! \

if i was a billionair i would remake blackish without telling people call it something wite. and just use the same things switching out black and white! and when the meltdown comes i show them side by side i coppied blackish

I never watched Black Panther - but in the trailers the CGI (some fight scene on top of cars) looked among the worst I had ever seen, Spiderman 1 looked much better. I was actually wondering if a work-in-progress clip had somehow been slipped in by mistake.

I love the actors quote "so we’re an indigenous population of Harfoots, we’re hobbits but we’re called Harfoots, we’re multi-cultural, we’re a tribe not a race, so we’re black, asian and brown, even Maori types within it."

Like wut

One thing I always wondered about Wakanda, though - they showed a lot of half-and-halfies among them (mulattoes to use the old term). Since we don't see any white Wakandans, we must conclude that a lot of them Wakandan womenses have been sneaking off and getting themselves some of that sweet BWC when the brothers ain't looking.

Also to mimic GoT, they are injecting sex scenes into it.

Nothing like a group of disgusting Orcs raping kid Orcs to raise the ratings. That is Amazon HollowWood logic right there.

Oh and Tolkien is Hating from his Grave his Fetid Grandchildren who sold him out right now. They are everything he stood against.

16
AHonkTooFar 16 points ago +16 / -0

I thought liberals were saying the orcs were black so portraying them in a bad light is racist? I honestly can't keep up with the narratives anymore. Dey wuz good orcs, they dindu nuffin, they jus wanted to beat dwarves and go to school to be gud siege engineers.

Remember what Disney did with everything when they bought it? For 45 years Boba Fett was the bad guy. He hunted the hero. Now he is the hero. Kylo Ren was a murdering savage that killed kids and innocents, but we get to watch him fall in love with the hero, and even ruin the skywalker name. There is no doubt in my mind in 5 years we will have a spinoff from the Hobbit called Orcs and it will be about how the Orcs were just misunderstood and had their own oppression storyline and that the Hobbits actually have a Hobbit town mayor that has 5 whores in his hobbit house and has underground tunnels stealing water from the Orc world.

7
midgetpornrocks 7 points ago +7 / -0

Disney has definitely been taking villains and making them appear to be the good guys: Maleficent, Cruella, etc.

But other companies have been doing that even before Disney. DC Comics made a hero of Lucifer.

For a long time, they've been normalizing traditionally evil people. So when you see true evil, the brainwashed masses accept it, eat it up, and even ask for seconds.

I like redemption arcs but Disney and sjw writers in general are so childish in mentality they think if you kill a few billion people then act all angsty and have the sads for a bit you can suddenly be redeemed and let's just ignore all the death that wasn't really you (assuming you're sufficiently high on the victim ladder and therefore oppressed, somehow)

5
JustBoo 5 points ago +5 / -0

"+" 100. Well said. I've thought the very same.

Even in the Witcher, Jenn saves the Black Knight(?) after he's ruthlessly killed tens of thousands of people. Note, I still really like the Witcher nonetheless. Literally the only show I've watched regularly in years.

1
Xahnel 1 point ago +1 / -0

Eh... That's not really unique to Disney. Oldest characters I can think of think of that fit this are Darth Vader (1970s) and Vegeta(1980s). Vader murdered countless people personally (including children), as well as destroying a planet.

Vegeta was a mercenary for an intergalactic real estate shark that routinely cleansed multiple worlds in order to sell them off to the highest bidder.

Both end up canonically redeemed.

1
AHonkTooFar 1 point ago +1 / -0

Except Darth Vader died for it. The new approach seems to be there are zero in-universe consequences and all the other characters soon act like they did nothing wrong.

Yeah, I suppose there are other examples like Tealc. But you don't have characters who saw what they did suddenly being okay with it after an episode or two, several times someone who recognizes them tries to take revenge. They usually only get forgiven for some great deed like saving lives on a planet they once targeted and stuff like that. Now they get forgiven very quickly. According to a friend (I haven't seen it) the new Startrek series had a character commit mass genocide then get welcomed with open arms. And Blizzard are apparently trying to retcon Sylvanas that all the evil she did wasn't on her.

2
Xahnel 2 points ago +2 / -0

Darth Vader might have died, but him doing one single good thing, even if it was killing the big bad, does not balance that checkbook.

Dragon Ball is even worse. It's basically a consequence free world, since they have the ability to undo the acts of evil, and Goku keeps just adopting killers. And yeah, it works out, but only because no one ever faces consequences and the writers just make it work out.

Teal'c is something of a special case. He recognizes he's the bad guy because Bra'tac taught him the truth, that he worshipped a false god and his job was to quietly temper their ego and cruelty, and shoulder many sins. The first real opportunity he gets to turn on his boss and save people, he seizes with both hands, instead of agonizing over it over a cup of torture (vader), or only taking that option when he has literally no other choice (vegeta). And he actually works really hard, going planet by planet and tearing down the tyrants and their comfortable system, and his past weighs on him constantly. Long past the point where others have forgiven him, Teal'c is still fighting to right his wrongs, so all may be free of Goa'uld tyranny.

The difference between these four characters is that Teal'c is the only one who faces consequences, who genuinely struggles, who recognizes his misdeeds and admits to them and owns them and works constantly to fix them. Vader, killed one dude then died. Vegeta, just spends his life training and ignoring his family unless he's forced to participate, until the next bad guy comes along and he can have himself a punch up for almost entirely selfish reasons.

Haven't seen the new Star Trek, but that guy is probably never going to face shit or work to fix it, either.

It's an unfortunate trend that's been going on for a long time across multiple cultures, and a good, believable redemption story is very hard to come by.

1
AHonkTooFar 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yeah, that's fair. I don't disagree. And by Vader being 'redeemed' by his death, I don't mean it balances it out, but he was punished.

No idea about veggie.

True. But it definitely feels like mainstream writing quality has gotten even worse on that front overall.

2
DudeThatCame2Sarnath 2 points ago +2 / -0

George R. R. Martin is a lonely nerd and terrible writer. He had to write hundreds of trash paperbacks just to eke out anything decent.

Tolkien wrote the Hobbit for his kids and then carefully crafted an entire world and history surrounding it.

Its sad that people want to dumb down Tolkien to Martin's shit level.

The amount of sex Martin put in his books shows how terrible a writer he is/was.

Tolkien would never have put that shit in his books.

8
JustBoo 8 points ago +8 / -0

Yes sir. I agree. And Tolkien wrote it after being on the front lines in World War One. In one the most devastating wars of all time. He was There. It's clear, to me at least, he had an adult perspective that has made his novels some of the greatest books of all-time.

5
SPEDMan64 5 points ago +5 / -0

I know Martin more as an editor of others' work than his own. And I was the Fiction department manager of a book store. Other than GoT I can't think of anything he wrote that was all that notable.

I was put off by the Hobbit movies at first. When I did research and found that most of the extras came from Tolkien's barely read stuff like the Silmarillion, I gained respect for it.

Elves, Elfs, Ogres, Goblins, Trolls, are historically stories created by white countries. This is the stuff our fairy tales are made up of. They don't belong to black people. Injecting black elves, black anything into these worlds is gay and fake. And you know it will be powered with sex scenes. The Prime\Netflix world is salivating to take those great innocent movies and turn them into Elv\Elf\Goblin sex filled cauldrons of filth.

Imagine The Witcher but with Hobbits.

People need to understand the context under which Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings. He was attempting to create a national foundational legend, to replace the ones that were lost during the Frankish wars. (This was during the 11th century. For context, the Matter of Britain didn’t appear in writing, until the 13th century). There were nearly zero black or brown people in the British Isles, before that time. Any attempt at diversity is in bad faith.

As a side note to that, I noticed in the original LOTR trilogy that every single good character had blue eyes, elf, hobbit, human, wizard. Only the ones who fought with Saruman and Sauron had dark eyes. This was obviously not a coincidence, because the actors who had brown eyes had to wear blue contacts, like the guy who played Legolas. It always seemed to me that the movie makers were making a statement that in Middle Earth, people were freaking white, dammit.

if you want to see how bad and woke it will be watch wheel of time if your familiar with the books

they butchered it beyond belief

because in essence in wheel of time there is magic power but it is gendered you have the male side of the power and the female side

and because men and women did not work together to defeat the dark one! but openly because men went without help of the women. the dark one got defeated! but corrupted the mans side of the power.

so now men cant use magic because the power is corrupted so if they do they go mad!

long story short, you cant have a gendered magic system so they messed it all up! breaking the world building and magic system because updated for modern sensibilities

I'm a big fan of Tim Burton movies such as Edward Scissorhands, but just because someone remakes it and calls it Edward Penishands doesn't make it a legitimate canon remake nor do I have to support it by liking/watching it. Same with these liberal reimaginings. Just act as if they don't exist, and maybe they'll stop getting made.

I criticized Star Trek for having the black guy Vulcan in Voyager. Before then there'd been no indication that Vulcan people looked anything other than a sort of middle-eastern dark skinned Caucasian aside the ears and brows. So how did one get features similar to the earth African? Not just skin color but an entirely different nose and skull shape.

Of course the obvious answer was to be woke, but it was funny to watch people dance around trying to come up with some in-cannon type of answer.

Guess what else? These characters are purely and strictly white folk-lore.

I love the fact that these leftists want to re-define, and re-imagine everything that is great and white as great and NOT white, but they can't. Unless they go burning books like they did in the 30s and 40s, they will never stamp-out the impact White's have had on this planet.

Were hobbits ever described as a white race? They're related to humans so why wouldn't a variety of complexions be expected. Tolkien described their appearances as small human like creatures that were a bit stout, jovial, and had hairy feet and brown hair. If they swapped races of main or previously named characters that were depicted as white then that's an issue but why be upset that the hobbits are not all white?

15
deleted 15 points ago +15 / -0
-10
MAGAnomics_101 -10 points ago +1 / -11

Anything the author didn't explicitly state in the description is your own head canon. Tolkien did not mention anything about homogenous genetics. Their complexions are not mentioned but Tolkien did say they were offshoots of humans so they could have been anything from pale white to dark as night and every shade in between.

Since you brought up genetics, two people of a brown complexion can produce offspring of every shade of brown which is why humans have such a wide variety of complexions. That would explain why people (or hobbits) of different shades are in the same area despite being isolated. To get people that are homogenously white or dark then the group would have to have the traits that produce melanin bred out in the case of whiteness and the trait that reduces melanin bred out for darkness otherwise you get a spectrum of complexions from very light brown which we typically call white and very dark brown which we typically call black. If these white or black groups are then isolated then you get a group of people that are only black or white. Where in the Lord of the rings is this stated about hobbits? You've assumed and it is your own head canon not the author's intention.

An appeal to ancient times is not appropriate either because in ancient times the language and culture people shared was more important than how people looked which is why outsiders were considered barbarians because they didn't speak the language; this notion of race and belief in different races of humanity is only a few hundreds years old, dating back to the 1700s, before we understood genetics which disproves the race myth. Maybe Tolkien just wasn't obsessed with race?
