They should use FBI crime statistics in math class

96
ModernKnight 96 points ago +96 / -0

So, if you have a group who makes up 13% of the population, what proportion of the violent crime SHOULD that group make up?

49
GOPkilledTHEMSELVES 49 points ago +50 / -1

13% if you live in Florida. Anywhere west of Amarillo the answer is 75% or more.

texastrees 46 points ago +46 / -0

Oh even better, if you think about it around half of that 13% can presumably be excluded because they're elderly, young children, or females who are statistically less likely to commit a violent crime than males. So in reality you have about 6-7% of the population committing 80% of the violent crimes in our country. But that's rayciss!

20
fazaman 20 points ago +20 / -0

Less than that. That number assumes that A: Males make up about 50% of the population. Who knows if this is true, considering how many are murdered by their gang rivals, and B: All males are equally likely to murder. This likely isn't the case, as children under 13 or so, and probably males over 50 are less likely to murder, so it's probably more like 3-4%.

7
notCIA 7 points ago +7 / -0

Most violent crime is committed by a small group of people inside most demographics. Some people would call these killing machines "super predators".

4
Crownius 4 points ago +5 / -1

I was under the impression that there were 2x as many females as males.

11
loverat 11 points ago +11 / -0

You misspelt twice the size.

2
independentbystander 2 points ago +2 / -0

Also: males are more likely to be arrested/imprisoned, so some of the 3-4% will be in jail (where even there, some will continue to kill people.)

4
fazaman 4 points ago +4 / -0

And a good chunk of them are just good people living their lives... There's probably much less than 1% of the population responsible for all of the murders.

2
independentbystander 2 points ago +2 / -0

Like the "bowl of Skittles" thing: You could have 100 Skittles in a bowl, 99% are just fine- but there is one Skittle that is poisoned. Only the most attention-starved social-media "influencer" type would dare eat one of those Skittles at random. The average logical person would not risk a 1% chance of painful demise, even for a sizable amount of money. These days, one might find more people than usual who are desperate/shallow enough to take that sort of risk- but those are not "average logical people."

As I said recently, I am turning down business travel to DNC Sanctuary Cities that encourage violence/crime by being lenient with illegal immigrant/POC crime. Maybe there is a 1% chance of getting carjacked/shot/mugged/curb-stomped, but that is 1% more than I am going to risk. I would be at higher risk than the typical traveler, as I would be in charge of expensive specialized equipment (much of it not my own.) Often, large clubs/concert venues are located in a high-crime and/or low-rent area of town where it unsafe for anyone on the best days.

> Example: the Staples Center in LA (now the "Crypto.com Arena") is downtown, but that's not a good thing. The last time I was there 10 years ago, there was a huge Skid Row of a homeless camp a block or so away. Even then, all the "tourist areas" were crawling with homeless people and aggressive panhandlers. After seeing the more-recent crime and homeless issues, I know I made the right decision getting out of LA for good. Now that Sanctuary Cities are a trend with similar soft-on-crime problems, I am writing off a lot of cities as "no-go zones."

Sounds like Seattle, caught a Hawks game I think the 2018 season (used to catch one every year) The town was so depraved from just the year prior, it was actually frightening to even me, and been going there my whole life, lived there at one point. You didn’t just have a 1% chance of something crazy happening, it was 5% at minimum just during the day in ‘18. The only time I’ve ever been back was 2020 XFL game and I took the train that drops you right at the stadium, I was way to terrified to walk any further, not to sound like a pussy, but keep in mind I’m with my wife for these games and we haven’t been back since, I’m not risking it with her, don’t really care what happens to me.

13
RStroud 13 points ago +13 / -0

Black females are far more likely to murder than black males. They're actually a leading cause of death for black people, up there with heart disease and cancer. The CDC doesn't list the figures in their deaths and mortality stats because it doesn't consider unborn children to be alive. They should absolutely be directed to include them.

1
comlib 1 point ago +1 / -0

Well, you can't compare only the able adult males of the minority population against all members of the rest of the population. You'd need to decrease the rest of the population by the same ratio which means it comes out exactly the same as before.

Mrs.Frostbite 30 points ago +32 / -2

Homeschool parent here. Math books are awful. They are full of pictures and colors and extra words. Go back and look at an 1800’s math book. It’s a quick explanation, no pictures and then the equations. This is what a good math textbook should be. Too many colors and pictures and words on a page confuses the brain and thus makes focusing difficult. And that is the crux of this entire issue: the publishers do not want the students to learn mathematics but to hate it and focus on their true agenda - dumbing down of the population so they can be controlled.

Old saxon books (1st and 2nd editions) are good. Rays arithmetic can be found for free online. Rod and Staff a Mennonite publication may also be a good option though it doesn’t go into the higher maths. I use singapore primary for elementary but it has some drawbacks (common core creeps in).

12
OKRancher 12 points ago +13 / -1

You’re exactly right. I teach my son the math because the books are horrible at explaining it. They seem more concerned with busy work and confusing kids than teaching them.

12
LesboPregnancyScare 12 points ago +12 / -0

They seem more concerned with busy work

this started with the feminization of schools. Busy work is right. public schools are instructed to give students credit for trying, and for organization and what not in math/science classes. That is how girls caught up to boys in grades/scores in math/science. Girls didnt perform better, the curriculum was changed such that now boys do worse.

5
RStroud 5 points ago +5 / -0

Up to about the start of puberty, kids have very little critical thinking ability but incredible capacity to do things by rote memory and processing. They may not know what it means or why it is useful, but they can churn out an answer. When they begin to question everything, that's when it is appropriate to teach the conceptual and critical thinking side.

Making reading, writing, and basic math automatic are probably the biggest things you can do. Patterns, tips, and tricks are great. Teaching them 5 different abstract methods to think about solving a problem, early on, and forcing them to use them like common core does, just confuses them. Given enough exposure, they begin to develop their own methods and strategies that work for them. That's how mastery and understanding is eventually achieved.

1
Mrs.Frostbite 1 point ago +1 / -0

Exactly. Young kids love memorizing and should memorize all math facts. If this is done a child then can go directly to fifth grade math. Understanding comes later but having the base of math facts then makes math less difficult and enjoyable and ultimately the student will excel.

2
plaaaa 2 points ago +2 / -0

The examples in article don't even relate to anything a child would need or want to do. So why would children even use the algebra for? CRT teachers are idiots.

8
Rubberbunnies 8 points ago +8 / -0

I'm old enough now that I remember some of that. You're right, very few pictures in the older stuff.

I remember a major transition in high school with curriculum during the mid 90s. New courses and books introduced. At the time I thought the new stuff was pretty slick because it had nice colors and looked more modern. It also didn't smell and wasn't held together by tape on the spine.

Had I know then what I know now....

6
DoesItWorkAlready 6 points ago +6 / -0

They are full of pictures

I homeschooled my high school youngest during the Covid shutdowns.

He's a visual learner. He would have failed utterly with a "words only" approach. The specific topic that helped hugely with pictures were Geometry and Biology.

A good chunk of math was developed with geometry - aka pictures. Go look at the original competing theories of Calculus for a good example.

Don't let printing limitations from the 19th century stop your visual learners from getting a good education

4
dunkeater 4 points ago +6 / -2

Besides geometry, the majority of advanced math needs to be done abstractly without visual aides. It's better to push students to learn abstract mathematical reasoning than to limit them with only simple math that can be shown visually.

4
DoesItWorkAlready 4 points ago +4 / -0

For people with a higher verbal IQ, you are correct.

My line of people has higher visual IQ. You are incorrect.

I spent a lot of my math career drawing simple pictures for complicated math. It helped a lot of people including myself.

7
dunkeater 7 points ago +7 / -0

To each their own, but it's hard to imagine programming or doing advanced calculus while still relying on visual aides. For what it's worth, I used to compete in math competitions as a middle and high school student and not one competitor there used visuals.

4
spezisapedo2 4 points ago +4 / -0

physicist post graduate. We use visual aids.

1
DoesItWorkAlready 1 point ago +1 / -0

To each their own, but it's hard to imagine programming or doing advanced calculus

I did it all the time early on in my engineering career. When I'm presenting calculus based results I usually present them graphically as well as the equations.

See "Labview" for a professionally used graphical programming language. Super fast prototyping.

3
RStroud 3 points ago +3 / -0

Plotting a function, understanding minimums and maximums, inversion points, slope, change in slope, and areas under a curve all seem like visually relatable concepts. Even when you move on to applications like statistics and physics, graphical representation is often very illuminating.

If I were going to introduce a student to the normal distribution, I would show it on a graph before I even talked about the cumulative distribution and probability density functions that define it.

Things like set theory, information theory, signal analysis/processing, topologies, and linear algebra can be very visual. I find it hard to think of any mathematics where visual representations like a graph, chart, or diagram are not routinely used to explain the concepts being studied.

Good advice. My kids are grown now but I wish I could have done that

2
TheEnclave89 2 points ago +2 / -0

I agree, the colors do tend to distract younger students, and older ones too, from the primary lessons in math.

At higher levels, like calculus 1, statistics and differential equations, focusing on equations and applications of identities is imperative; a lot of books have way too make visualizations which many not even help with learning in anyway, they make lessons longer than they have to be. Solving a variety of problems, to show how to logically get to an answer helps waaaay more. And, above calc 1, 2 & 3, visuals help, but only if being used to do something like a double or triple integral for area or volume, to see how integrals may be used to define objects, or using something like a derivative to see instantaneous rate of something.

Going through the laws and deducing are the best methods, I think.

1
hzuiel 1 point ago +2 / -1

I dont think that is the goal. The elites need things to function as much as anyone. Having power is pointless if you live in a shithole. They still need someone to design all their fancy luxury stuff, build their mansions, and keep the logistics going that make it so they never have to want for anything. It is not necessary to make people actually stupid, they just need to be controllable. This CRT stuff, the trans agenda, it is often compared to 1984 when they try to get him to say that 2+2 = 5. They dont actually need him to do bad math, they just want him to submit to that most obvious and basic level. In day to day operations they need people like him to do their work competently. Most of this stuff we are facing now is a means to an end. They dont want stupid kids, they want controllable kids. If anything they would try to make people stupid short term but the long term plan isnt common stupidity. Very smart people can be controlled if they are sufficiently brainwashed and affected by the right influences. Its the same thing as all the anti racist agenda, these are marxists. They create demand for change by creating chaos, then offering communism as the solution. Destabilizing race relations is how they accomplish the end goal. In the end they want no identities, outside of whatever group "the party" says to identify with, and no individualism.

In their utopian fantasy they have a still very functional society and all of the power condensed down to them by the end. Any breakdown is meant to be temporary.

Sample question:

Tyrone murders 3 people.

Whitey punches Tyrone for murdering Whitey's family.

Who gets more prison time?

Those examples. My mind can’t process how these are legitimate math questions for students. Unbelievable. No wonder our test scores are lousy.

My God...

I would say that these people are sick, but it goes beyond that. Liberals are thoroughly fucked in the head...

When I see shit like this, I can only look at people who support degeneracy like this as sub-human.

y=x+2 3x + 6y = 12

Angelou was sexually abused by her mother's ___ at age 8, which shaped her career choices and motivation for writing.

A: (0, 2) boyfriend

B: (4, 6) brother

C: (-3, -1) father

And

×=4-1 1=-4x+21

Trying to support her son as a single mother, she worked as a pimp, prostitute and______

A: (-3, -2) Bookie

B: (9,10) Drug Dealer

C: (4, 5) Night Club Dancer

This is about maya angelou and her life, but why are they interjecting “stories” with math in the first place?

Propaganda.

I've heard of word problems, sure but no need to use "diverse" names like Angelou and Shaniquah. Bob has 5 candy bars and Sally has 10... no need to inject a "black sounding name" or a "Latinx gender-neutral name"

If George has 5 lbs of ground beef and Tina has 10, how much global warming is there when we apply the standard deviation of implicit racial bias and gendernormativity?

“If half of all reported crimes occur in 13.2% out of a total population of 385,000,000, how many potential criminals are there in that total population?”

2
DonttrustChina 2 points ago +2 / -0

I remember that "implicit bias" test. It took me about five minutes to realize that it's a video game.

It teaches you a control scheme, and once you have the muscle memory for it down, it flips the controls and then tells you you're racist because your speed and accuracy diminished due to your muscle memory being confused. Every gamer has experienced this trick, where something in a game screws with how your controls work and you panic.

So I did what I do in any boss fight I lose. I reloaded and tried again. And again. And again, until I'd gotten myself used to the switching controls. In the span of about an hour, I completely eliminated my "implicit bias" and undid a lifetime of racism, according to the test's logic.

It's complete bullshit.

As if the use of sexual abuse wasn’t bad enough, in the example given, they’re referencing Maya Angelou’s childhood specifically. So, a trip to Wikipedia and you don’t need to know how to do the actual math, because you know what the right answer should be.

DeSantis is 100% right here. There are a million topics one can cover for statistics and graphs, and the one they choose just so happens to be a very divisive topic.

I have to be frank with you folks.

There are all sorts of learning styles. The combination of real world "stories" with algebra actually improves learning.

The problem is the choice of stories; not the approach.

Now before you start hurling insults and calling me stupid, my UNDERGRAD degree required Calc 1, 2 and 3 -- all of which I aced.

OKRancher 3 points ago +3 / -0

People do learn best in different ways. You’re still wrong for trying to defend these people. There is no excuse for any of this. Stating your degree and the classes you took is a leftist tactic. It’s irrelevant. I’d bet good money I’m better at math than you and you have never heard me brag about it.

1
PatriotDescendant 1 point ago +1 / -0

I'm not defending "these people".

"These people" are racists.

I'm defending the learning principle -- which is 100% worth pursuing.

My question would be is the Child answering the math problem or just guessing the correct word in the problem that is associated with the numbers?

1
PatriotDescendant 1 point ago +1 / -0

That would become evident over time.

1
Mangomangomango89 1 point ago +1 / -0

Not sure I agree. It seems like if you know the right answers to these "stories" you don't even have to know how to do the math

1
PatriotDescendant 1 point ago +1 / -0

Do some research. You'll learn and agree.

1
jimmyfoxhound 1 point ago +1 / -0

Growing up I NEVER saw a multiple choice answer for a math test like their example where the 'story' has a missing word helps them guess the correct choice. That has to be the STUPIDEST way to teach math I've ever seen.

1
Winner45 1 point ago +1 / -0

Unfortunately while children can choose their own genders as hormone blockers, they still cannot choose their own learning style. It’s one size fits all at schools, and Algebra stories are going to hold back more kids than they help.
