Remember in IRobot when they wanted to try and kill will smiths character by hacking his car while it was doing 200mph on the highway? Kill switch my ass. From now on the Clintons can kill you with a simple push of a button. I see lots of “died in mysterious car crash” articles in the near future. Good bye Elon. They will go after you first.

BigIronBigIron 50 points ago +55 / -5

Elon is probably more responsible for the automation of driving than any other person alive. He's on record saying driving will be illegal in the future.

23
ThorsonTT 23 points ago +29 / -6

Automation does not necessitate remote control.

37
MAGAmanforever 37 points ago +37 / -0

Turning your engine off and in turn killing your braking power, ability to steer, along with a number of other necessary functions that an automobile needs to be drivable. So they don't need remote control to kill you, they could just disable your vehicle while you are cornering near a bunch of trees or any number of a million scenarios where killing the engine would kill you.

But in an electric car there is no engine to turn off.

18
BigIronBigIron 18 points ago +18 / -0

That's even worse.

1
Friar_Pede 1 point ago +2 / -1

Was Michael Hastings Mercedes electric?

6
BigIronBigIron 6 points ago +6 / -0

Nope. But you can strip a car of most of its guts and still make it go put-put-put as long as it's got an internal combustion engine. Turn it into a box car with no frame and it still drives.

7
MAGAmanforever 7 points ago +8 / -1

An electric engine is still an engine, it runs on electricity from batteries instead of combustion however it is the same dynamic. An electric engine is even easier to remotely disable, especially if it is connected to some self driving internet control grid.

8
Vortmak 8 points ago +9 / -1

It's called a electric motor 😅

1
love_and_peace 1 point ago +1 / -0

semantics. Why is a gas powered vehicle with an engine referred to as a 'motor vehicle'.

6
TyrantsAreCucks 6 points ago +7 / -1

Can definitely shut off the relays that allow your accelerator, brakes, steering, etc to work

2
NotAnotherNPC 2 points ago +2 / -0

In an electric car there is power control that can send zero volts to the motor.

4
Strike08 4 points ago +4 / -0

And how do you think gas engines are controlled. All modern cars are drive by wire. The on board computer decides if more gas goes into the engine. If computer says no you get no power.

1
NotAnotherNPC 1 point ago +1 / -0

I agree. My point was that becky was being pedantic with an engine vice motor. Killing the engine (i.e. starving it of fuel or other means) and turning off electricity to a motor have the same effect. Should someone be able to control that remotely, there's problems.

0
SPEDMan64 0 points ago +1 / -1

And what exactly do you suppose is driving the wheels round and round?

-5
becky21k1 -5 points ago +2 / -7

Momentum, once you turn the electricity off

9
BigIronBigIron 9 points ago +9 / -0

Automation does not necessitate remote control.

Globalism does. You should realize by now who you're dealing with.

7
The88888888 7 points ago +7 / -0

Everything is going to be cloud based in the future. Remote control will always be a thing. How do you think they can get real time traffic before you even arrive? That's just maps.

7
EagleOverTriumph 7 points ago +8 / -1

It'll inevitably be handled by the internet. The idea is to have basically a hivemind of cars that can all communicate with each other so they can coordinate traffic automatically and if it's anything like queueing systems, it'll cause everything to take far longer than driving yourself. Considering TWENTY YEARS LEFT TM you'd think they'd be pushing for bicycles and shit instead.

6
BigIronBigIron 6 points ago +6 / -0

it'll cause everything to take far longer than driving yourself

*Exceptions apply

You think anyone in a Rolls Royce is going to be stuck in automated traffic?

8
EagleOverTriumph 8 points ago +8 / -0

Don't worry, the plebs aren't going to actually own these cars. It'll be the new Uber/Lyft services. Remember, "you'll own nothing and be happy" it's cool we won't own the bikes either.

2
Skogin 2 points ago +2 / -0

6
MythArcana 6 points ago +6 / -0

Well, that's the guise in which this legislation is hiding it's ugly truth. They are trying to say it's a public health issue in California because of drunk driving, tracking kidnappers, etc.. What it really means is giving the government more control over your life to do whatever they want if they don't like what you do or say.

The CIA has been doing this for decades already, shown in a Wikileaks dump. If your car has an internal computer (pretty much any car with power steering) they can hack your car and assassinate you by driving you off a cliff.

10
becky21k1 10 points ago +14 / -4

Cars have had computers since the early 1980s.

The only ones they can get into are ones with provisions for internet connectivity.

Then to take it over it has to have drive by wire technology for throttle and electric assist steering.

I won't own a vehicle set up that way. My current vehicle is going on 28 years old.

5
Colonel_Chestbridge 5 points ago +5 / -0

In the CIA docs it’s not done remotely, they have to physically install something in your car.

-5
becky21k1 -5 points ago +1 / -6

Makes sense. But the car still has to have drive by wire systems to take them over.

3
Cantshadowbanthemall 3 points ago +3 / -0

Not manual transmissions

2
Colonel_Chestbridge 2 points ago +4 / -2

Pretty sure even manual transmissions built after like 1980 still have internal computers.

9
Unaor2 9 points ago +9 / -0

They do, but you can physically disconnect the transmission at any time by going to neutral or even just depressing the clutch. So they can make your engine redline until it explodes, but at least you won't be going 160 MPH when that happens.

t. manual owner.

8
Cantshadowbanthemall 8 points ago +8 / -0

I guess you are unfamiliar with how a manual works: you push a pedal and the engine is disconnected from the transmission. Additionally there is a manual brake (except the Porsche and new + shitty Corvette) for which you can slow the vehicle.

No computer anything can override these two technologies

3
posedgeclk 3 points ago +3 / -0

They don't.

1
NZbacon 1 point ago +1 / -0

Nope. Manual gearbox has no computer control.

1
MasksAreChildAbuse 1 point ago +1 / -0

I have a manual, and once I’m in gear can control my car like a video game controller from the steering wheel only, including acceleration/deacceleration without touching the gas pedal.

It’s almost 15 years old too.

I’m not a computer expert, but that definitely seems like something a computer is involved with.

That's how they killed one of Putin's drivers many years ago. he was driving really fast and somehow they caused him to swerve into oncoming traffic.

1
BigIronBigIron 1 point ago +1 / -0

I think you have it wrong. That driver was some rando coming in hot from a mile away.

2
__bryan 2 points ago +2 / -0

it was Putin's drivers car that swerved I think. and the implication was that someone somehow managed to control that car and make it swerve, however you could be right maybe it was the other driver that's weird.

2
BigIronBigIron 2 points ago +2 / -0

Funny, I can't find the original wide angle video.

The swerving Mercedes did not belong to Putin's chauffeur. The chauffeur was driving a BMW in the left lane when the swerving Mercedes entered his lane from the opposite direction and plowed into it at breakneck speed.

The swerving car had been coming down a highway ramp & had a hell of a lot of energy before losing control. (I think it was just an accident.)

POTUS_DonnieJ 87 points ago +87 / -0

Auto industry insider here, this isn’t entirely accurate. The bill called for a proposed regulation to be drafted and studied, it did not mandate the kill switch. While its terrifying that this even got that far, the reassuring bit is that these sorts of studies are commissioned all the time and they never go anywhere, its just money laundering to the regulators and special interest groups doing the studies. Granted, with this administration, anything can happen so always good to be on your toes.

obummer's cash for clunkers grift was an extremely deceitful scam. It pulled reliable, easy to work on - affordable transportation out of circulation.

It's alway been about hampering mobility... You can't travel long-distance easily with EV. If it was really about being green, everything would be small displacement turbo diesels hooked to a generator like a trains powerplant

4
GabeC1997 4 points ago +4 / -0

On an only tangently related note, I've always liked the idea of having cars that can drive on rails, like those rail worker trucks you occasionally see. Just drive up to set of entry/exit rails, lower the rail wheels, switch the gear, and drive on. I'd imagine it would need less maintenance than normal blacktop since metal is less prone to microfractures when placed under stress, and it would simplify any needed software to automate the driving on a theoretical rail highway, allowing travel at higher speeds.

To much work to actually implement, but it'd certainly be nice to have the option.

2

Cars will always use wires to communicate. None is coming up with dash sized circuit boards anytime soon. A competent mechanic should be able to at least bypass if not pull it out entirely.

Any chipped key can remotely disable a vehicle, the key simply won't work, they could use a localized EMP even. If the vehicle no longer recognizes the chip in the key as it's own it won't even start the engine and will auto blare the horn like an alarm, I had it happen just getting a key with included chip crap get wet. Once again using a security measure as a backdoor to disabling a vehicle any time they see fit. ALL modern vehicles are automatically lowjacked from the factory, if it says anti-theft that means it is disabled by remote any time a person with access to those tools wants to.

7

"Kill switches" have been around for almost two decades for christ sake and no one was crying back then. Actually most GM vehicles came with it as early as 2004, it was called [email protected]!.........Used car dealers also had devices installed on their subprime (high risk) borrowers vehicles that if they missed a payment their car would not start........

5
Margej 5 points ago +5 / -0
  1. The loan is not with the dealership. The dealership does not care at that point if you pay or not.
  2. Onstar doesn’t disable vehicles for non payment. The only reason they do this is if a vehicle is stolen and they’re working with police intervention.
5
jetsetradeo 5 points ago +5 / -0

Not quite true. Friend of mine founded and ran a now defunct after school kids race car building program. GM gave them a ZR1.

Kids ripped it apart and prepped it for track. My buddy (a certified track instructor) got behind the wheel at the track and OnStar decided to turn the car off remotely almost killing him in the process. All because ‘they’ thought it was stolen and driving around at 150+ mph without police intervention.

That’s a problem that they monitor and control such things. They also should have noticed it wasn’t going anywhere even though the car was in a hurry.

The OnStar module was found and ripped out after that.

Got some bad news for all of you who think you're going to avoid this stuff with older vehicles: They've already got a plan for you.

Once the automated drive/telematics revolution really takes off, which you can expect will happen within the next 5 years (supply chain issues have delayed it, otherwise we'd be close to there already), the insurance companies will start to acquire actuarial data on the difference between cars with this level of tech, and those without it.

What that data is going to show shouldn't surprise anyone: Humans are the weak link in transportation safety. Cars operating with auto-drive tech will be orders of magnitude less likely to be in an accident. And while a small number of deadly wrecks with the tech will grab headlines, the data will tell the truth.

At that point it's only a matter of time. Time for the auto companies to sell more of these cars onto the highways, and time for the insurance companies to lobby state governments mandating it's use. Sure, you can keep your pre-telematics car. And pay half it's value in insurance premiums every year for the privilege of being able to operate it on public roads.

I'll be shocked if you can buy a passenger vehicle in five years that doesn't have this tech equipped. Ten years, you won't be able to disable the stuff outside of a race track. And you can argue that auto-drive tech doesn't have to mean kill switch, but in practice it does. For legal reasons the manufacturers are never going to allow a self-drive car onto the roads that they can't disable, because there is always the risk that a vulnerability would be found that could result in the car becoming dangerous.

If the MFG can do it, .GOV being able to is only a warrant away.

This is so insanely feel good, it will never work in practice. Think about trying to call in a "kill" on a silver Chevy Silverado, which one? Oh, the license plate? Does it really match the vehicle?

No, the only way to implement some dystopian bullshit like this is if all burgundy, black, green, red, etc. cars are programmed the same and are disabled via proximity. But then again, you could repaint or wrap a vehicle. Maybe just use manufacturer specific kill codes.

At any rate, I think I read months ago that the tech they're actually looking for satisfies MADD and nobody else. Everyone will have an interlock and like it!

This shit scares me because I ride crotch rockets and I'm a pretty damn right wing conservative. I'm the kind of guy that the establishment left wants to kill. That would be a painful death

Malign son of a bitch. Looks like my 25 year old vehicle will be seeing 25 more years, or until I hit the dirt, whichever is first.
