They looked at your gun photo and were able to get your precise GPS coordinates.
They cross referenced that with phone databases for sale by cellphone carriers, phone app developers, etc.

Run as "jhead -purejpg file.jpg".
On Windows, you run it in a command.com box, Terminal on MacOS and any terminal program on Linux.

Go into your camera settings and disable "location tags." It may have a different name based on the device manufacturer.

In Texas you can sell guns to other people without a bill of sale or receipt, so the government can't know who you sold it to, or if you bought the gun.
So, I take it this likely fake text convo didn't take place in Texas.
But if you sell to an FBI agent, they will record the transaction.
Honestly, selling guns to strangers is iffy business anyways. Never know what they're going to do with it these days. Best to avoid the criminals and feds (what's the difference at this point anyways?) and just keep it to close ties.
