We are aware that Avast has been blocking functionality of the site under the guise of phishing and malware since yesterday.

We are working on getting them to resolve the problem, but in the meantime, we would recommend deleting or disabling Avast.

Please also flag the malware/phishing report as a false positive if you're an Avast user.

Truth. Somewhere along the line it started doing all the basics you needed from a standalone antivirus software.

Zepp87 65 points ago +65 / -0

Plus just being smart. Don't look at porn or click on random links or emails that seem sketch.

Keeping your shit virus free is relatively easy so long as everyone isn't a retard and you have a secure network.

It's all good until they start bringing over their mammas, unemployed brother, younger sister with a taste for felonious boyfriends, etc.

I don't know this from experience, just from other's experiences. It's the same story every time.

I got an email from a Somalian Prince that is trying to save orphans by moving his families money to the US. Never would have been able to connect with him if I didn't click the tiny.url.somalian.scam.edu link

You heard from him too? Dude, that was my uncle! I’m not black, and no one in my family ever mentioned any relations in Somalia, but he told me it was true! Tell him I said hi!

Both smart choices but I don't think I know anyone who's got anything from looking at porn since 2010. Browsers are lightyears ahead of what they were in the 2000s and pretty much everything is sandboxed and won't actually download to your device unless you explicitly do it.

Remembering the relentless porn popups that would destroy computers back then and had people ferociously clicking exit is pretty comical though.

9
TrumpoWon2020 9 points ago +9 / -0

Lol, those always got the hard boot followed by a virus scan.

6
Zepp87 6 points ago +7 / -1

Oh I remember those very well lol

6
War_Hamster 6 points ago +6 / -0

I've got a few friends whose computers used to lock up from the 100's of pop-up porn windows that would brigade their system from just one unwise click. It would take hours to cleanse their systems.

8
BallsackPaneer 8 points ago +8 / -0

In another life I provided desktop IT support.

My favorite story started off with a support call with a vague description of a web browser, and a whispered request to "just come up and see it".

I still cannot unsee the relentless barrage of midget porn site pop-ups that were triggered each time he opened IE. God knows what he was doing or what he had clicked on, but years later a colleague confirmed he was a bit of a freak.

So I pretty told him what we always told people, that it was probably from the previous user (complete BS) and that we would take and re-image his PC. At that point I heard someone say "told you so" from another cube and then the entire cube section started laughing at him. What a freak.

3
Morris_The_Grey 3 points ago +3 / -0

Just turn off the PC or disconnect the internet. Restart the browser without the internet connected.

1
War_Hamster 1 point ago +1 / -0

Would that have worked back then? Not sure we were smart enough to figure that out.

3
whateverbruh 3 points ago +4 / -1

My dad gave me an old laptop in the early 2000s and the first thing I did was blow it up in less than 24hrs with a virus.

2
Edial 2 points ago +2 / -0

Even though I think sites like Pornhub are shit-tier ever since they mass-purged things, I can't imagine they'd have viruses or whatever on the site. It's literally a business to them.

6
FireannDireach 6 points ago +6 / -0

From what I recall, sites like Pornhub didn't create or spread viruses. They came from ad networks they subscribed to for their relentless banner and pop up ads. They couldn't use AdSense (google) so the porn work created their own, and bad actors got into those ad networks, because it was cheap to buy a spot. Or that's what my network security buddies always said.

2
TrumpoWon2020 2 points ago +3 / -1

Pornhub, xvideos, etc are all safe. It's been well over a decade since well known porn sites had viruses. In fact, those sites likely never had viruses. The link between porn and viruses likely comes from the 90s and early 2000s where people where just going to whatever random porn site there internet browser found for them.

10
Cantshadowbanthemall 10 points ago +12 / -2

When you are fit, you don't need porn

14
Zepp87 14 points ago +15 / -1

Ehhh everyone has their vices. That was a hard one to overcome for me. Smoking? Easy shit. Sloth? Easy enough. But that... Took real effort. Crazy it made me like I'm 15 again once I did. Glad I did too.

Fitness helped somewhat. For me it was more about my mindset than anything.

7
Cantshadowbanthemall 7 points ago +8 / -1

Fitness breeds the healthy mindset but also the life one fantasizes about, taking away the escape. Once that is done it becomes an occasional thing.

2
Zepp87 2 points ago +2 / -0

Well put, and to put it very poorly....

Jackin it using your spank bank over porn is way more fulfilling anyway.

Also use a prepaid card for online transactions, particularly gun stores and political merch. Hacktivists love targeting conservatives.

8
Duckanddodge 8 points ago +8 / -0

Underrated comment. ^

to add, even moving funds for free from your bank to a cash app or Venmo card for online purchases would be safer than just using your bank debit, or credit card.

5
Skywise 5 points ago +5 / -0

Can you do donations from a prepaid card? I think it's required that you give your legal name in that case (and of course, that gets registered and published)

2
TrumpoWon2020 2 points ago +3 / -1

Yah, you're right. About the name and the articles. Like I said several years ago was a genius article about hacking into the US nuclear missile system. But then right next to that is an article about hacking soda vending machines. 🤷‍♂️ that's why I only read it in the store. Admittedly a lot of hacks are probably less than legal and people aren't willing to share. A lot of what I see in 2600 is from white hats.

2
TrumpoWon2020 2 points ago +3 / -1

I'm just saying hackers don't all work for Microsoft. That's just ridiculous. You just admitted that once you know how it becomes a hobby. Hence a thriving private non-Microsoft community of white hat and black hat geniuses that range from the beginner to the master that could likely take down any system in existence. Check out that magazine. Someone got into the nuclear missile silo system several years ago. That is the first magazine I grab anytime I'm at B&N.

You act like there is a set definition for "computer virus" and "malware" and that these are somehow different enough to need completely different defences.

2
TrumpoWon2020 2 points ago +3 / -1

If you contact malwarebytes they'll tell you they specifically do not target common viruses. I've asked them before. So that makes you a dumbass for speaking about something you haven't even talked to the company about.

Avast is festering malware. It is a poor product which constantly pesters the user to buy useless products. We block comments all the time. What is the difference exactly.

This is not a free speech platform.

With the way the modern left operates we will never have the opportunity to operate a true free speech platform online.

That’s not the fault of the right or it’s principles. That’s the fault of bad actors on the left and the idiots like you who don’t know the difference.

Did this thread deserve to be blocked? No.

But it’s clear that the outrage machine specifically designed to push forward foot in the door leftism under the guise of free speech here is also bullshit.

1
roadrunner0 1 point ago +1 / -0

I have had replies vanish many times, guess I am too raged edge sometimes..

1
YaharaRiver 1 point ago +2 / -1

This IS a free speech platform! You're allowed to argue, disagree, insult even! But we don't need or value trash posts, irrelevant posts, obscene posts, or posts that waste everyone's time. I once saw an 'innocent' post get removed because it was a poem or the lyrics to some obscure song (I guess) that the poster evidently thought was "clever" or "pertinent". It was neither - the post just took up a LOT of space and was a huge distraction from some meaningful remarks. We don't need that kind of shit. I was happy to see it gone! This is a comment section, and although it can teach you a few things, if people aren't making relevant remarks, if they're just elbowing in, then maybe they should make a post themselves and see how high their shit flies.

-1
Spicemustfiow -1 points ago +1 / -2

That’s not free speech.

All complaining about free speech here does is open the door to inorganic leftism. That’s it.

You already see it all the time because we don’t moderate enough. If this ever becomes a platform which supports that content the mods know that they will never see me again.

1
YaharaRiver 1 point ago +1 / -0

I'm pretty sure we agree, even if it seems like we're arguing "is" free speech, "is not" free speech..

-1
ThouShallNot02 -1 points ago +2 / -3

The mods have been banning Trump supporters for healthy criticisms and calling it shit posting.I got banned twice for it, once for warning that Trump was fucking us over by picking Bill Barr. Later I was banned again for saying it's Trumps fault for giving us AG Bill Barr. It guaranteed no justice, and reinforced our enemies. I think Trump needs to hear honest criticisms from his base. The mods on here dilute the conversation because they think they know best. They want to control conversation through censorship. It pisses me off, and they need to chill the fuck out with it.

4
-f-b-i- 4 points ago +4 / -0

There are thousands of places to shit on trump. This is not the place. I do not care about you being pissed about this. Support trump here.

0
ThouShallNot02 0 points ago +2 / -2

Look here -f-b-i-, healthy criticism is not shiting on Trump. It's far from it. Stop conflating the two. Healthy criticism is a vital resource, and it's a compass to navigate. If you were wise you would recognize that. Trump reads this site. This site is more than just a pep rally/pepe rally. Although I love me some pepe, and the positivity is great. Blind support is not. Your basically telling everyone with a brain to fall in line, and to please clap (JEB!). So respectfully to that I say go fuck yourself. This site is a cillvian intelligence gathering operation, as well as a pep rally, a pepe rally, and meme extravaganza. How about Stop banning the smartest Trump supporters. Theres plenty of places you can do that on the internet. Go work for reddit, they hire your type. They love the censorship, they love the power trip, you'll fit right in.

Others we just do not have time for.

Lol, you don't have 10 seconds to type a reason for censoring a comment into a reply to that comment?

What a bullshit excuse. You don't want to give a reason because half of the time you're removing comments for wrong-think (not loyal enough to the Trump cult). When people stray too far from the circle-jerk, you shut it down pretty fast, and hide behind the word "deleted" so that everyone doesn't know you're censoring shit.

Sometimes you're censoring the top comment (or multiple top comments) in a thread. Comments that obviously had dozens of upvotes. And you refuse to provide a reason? Because you're "too busy"?

5
-f-b-i- 5 points ago +5 / -0

Don't break a rule and nothing gets deleted. Very simple. Rules are listed on the sidebar.

1
BringTheCat789 1 point ago +1 / -0

For real. What the fuck is the point of locking a thread anyway. If there are comments on the posts that objectively break the rules, then delete those comments. If there are certain people who are on the post consistently breaking the rules, then ban them.

But what's the point of locking an entire thread?

It's still an advertisement for Google.

And you end up using Google extension marketplace.

I agree that Chromium is very fast and convenient, but it's not the best thing for freedom.

And neither is Mozilla. They push communist causes non-stop.

1
Forty_Five 1 point ago +1 / -0

Google is still the top contributor to the code base

2
JoinTheDiscussion 2 points ago +2 / -0

Correct, but the code can be reviewed before you compile it for your own use.. And people have.. Check out https://chromium.woolyss.com/ I prefer ungoogled version.. Don't need or want any google sync

1
Forty_Five 1 point ago +1 / -0

They can still play dirty tricks like creating new web standards that wouldn't be supported in Mozilla based browsers. Microsoft used to pull that shit all the time.

4
Master_Wyatt_Gurp 4 points ago +4 / -0

That is what it is though, its chromium not chrome. Open sourced and free.

Avast hates us!

Not as much as we hate Avast, though. I stopped using that PoS scanner back in 2008. I used an old pre-corporate spyware version with a minimal front end that worked pretty decent up until a certain point where they wanted to force me into a "suite of tools" scenario. Hell no, Eskimo.

More reason to ditch Windows. The OS is spyware.

5
JoinTheDiscussion 5 points ago +7 / -2

You can strip all the shit from windows and disable/block telemetry services

3
the_spezinator2 3 points ago +3 / -0

You'd pretty much be stripping Windows of itself to do that

3
JoinTheDiscussion 3 points ago +3 / -0

Na, look up Win 10 LTSC along with something like https://github.com/builtbybel/debotnet

3
the_spezinator2 3 points ago +3 / -0

It seems debotnet was discontinued almost 2 years ago, but the alternatives linked on the github seem interesting if you use Windows. I personally switched over to Linux as I don't believe Windows can ever truly have all of its telemetry gutted out without breaking the OS. I mean the start menu literally sends how many times you open it to Microsoft

1
JoinTheDiscussion 1 point ago +1 / -0

Makes going back to Win 7 seem like the best option

3
Annoyedwiththedevoid 3 points ago +4 / -1

I know there are people that monitor all the incoming and outgoing traffic on a computer and technically can be sure that you’re right, but, I can’t help but feel like Microsoft has some sort of backup telemetry that nobody has found yet, knowing people will have a false sense of security. I can’t find anything at all to back this up, it’s just a feeling

1
Taliesin 1 point ago +1 / -0

Maybe the Intel Management Engine is spying on its users, and there is nothing you can do to detect or stop it.

2
Annoyedwiththedevoid 2 points ago +2 / -0

Oh it absolutely is. I’ve been trying to figure out a way to disable it that isn’t way above my skill set, I know there are people online who claim to have disabled it, but I personally don’t know how

1
Taliesin 1 point ago +1 / -0

All the information on how to disable, or at least, limit the IME, is a few years old. I am afraid to try it in case it bricks my machine.

3
Husky 3 points ago +3 / -0

But you shouldn't have to.

The ONLY reason to use Windows is because software tools you use aren't/don't work well on Linux.

The only reason I even have a Windows box is because of Solidworks

Now with Steam and their Steam Deck, Linux has been a great alternative to windows.

Steams Proton technology has been a fantastic tool to use to get windows .exe files to work, let alone gaming via Steam.

I'm considering doing a new build with just AMD components and making it a Linux box. AMD has a TON of support for Linux and with FSR now being a thing along with Proton, gaming on Linux is now a reality for any user, not just your average casual.

2
DonLemonParty 2 points ago +2 / -0

With the hit that Steam Deck, we'll see more attention paid to proton. Hopefully a few companies can take porting their games to linux seriously.

2
papa_newguineapig 2 points ago +6 / -4

While I agree with you 100%, most the software that people need run only in windows, or...is pirateable. Macs suck, no pirate scene, so the only good option in my mind is Linux, and their environment is fucking trash, and so is their software support from the major players we all use.

6
anatidaephobia 6 points ago +9 / -3

That's a myth from the past. GNU+Linux runs most popular software natively. Plenty of FOSS alternatives for paid software, plenty of custom software. And in the few cases you can't find native software wine let's you run Binbows software under Linux, including older software that no longer works in Binbows.

3
thisguy883 3 points ago +3 / -0

I've been able to run all the programs I use on Windows in Linux with either Wine or Proton.

The only issue I'm having is that Pop_OS doesn't allow me to set my main monitor to 144hz because of the secondary monitor is a 60hz. So it defaults it to 60hz.

Only way to fix it is to unplug my second monitor, which I very obviously don't want to do.

2
the_spezinator2 2 points ago +2 / -0

I would recommend a Linux desktop environment with a "wayland" compositor, as that should allow you have independent refresh rates. I haven't actually tested it myself, as I only have a single monitor

1
thisguy883 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yea i read that this may or may not work in Pop_OS. For some people, its a hit or miss.

I might try a different distro. Maybe SteamOS 3 when it becomes available to download.

2

The M1 Mac Mini is the best bang for the buck I’ve ever spent on a computer. $700 and can handle 4K video editing. The iPhone XR was $300 and the most powerful phone I’ve ever had.

1

3

It's literally built for it. It'll handle RAW photo editing. M2 is coming out soon, so you can snag one now used like new for about $550 right now.

Check out Affinity Photo as a Lightroom / Photoshop replacement too. Only $50 for life!

3

1
covfefe_in_ur_cup 1 point ago +2 / -1

4
Forty_Five 4 points ago +4 / -0

Linux won't take over the desktop market because most people are idiots.

They have taken over the server market however.

-1
OneBigMaga -1 points ago +1 / -2

Linux has always been a server system, retard.

3
thisguy883 3 points ago +3 / -0

Look up the Steam Deck.

It's a handheld PC that runs off Linux. It's running SteamOS which is a flavor of Linux.

I might have agreed with your statement a couple years ago, but now, not so much after seeing what people are able to do with this device.

Because of the Deck, developers at Valve have been working to develop and update Proton, which is a translation software similar to Wine.

You can use Proton so long as you have steam installed on any Linux device you have. It isn't just dedicated to the Deck.

I've used Proton to run every windows application I threw at it, and it ran great. Sometimes it works better than the native Linux applications. For example, I tried to get this app to work on Linux by downloading the Linux version of it without using the app store. It was a pain in the ass to figure out, and the GitHub sites were less than helpful. So I said screw it, and downloaded the windows version. I added it as a "non-steam" game and forced it to launch with the latest Proton build. Not only did the app work, but it worked flawlessly.

I may not make the move 100% soon, but I'm almost there. I've dual booted and I keep my stuff on an external that both windows and Linux can read.

3
DonLemonParty 3 points ago +3 / -0

Everything Linux is hot garbage

Guess what runs the internet. I do agree that gaming on Linux isn't as good as Windows. Thanks to Valve, they have made strides in Linux gaming.

1
OneBigMaga 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yeah, it's a great server. Garbage desktop operating system, which is what we were talking about. People only game on linux because they hate themselves.

2
ltpayne 2 points ago +2 / -0

Anyone who says "Linux is hot garbage" - Hasn't used Linux and doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about at all. Especially if you do anything technical/IT related. I use Linux on Desktop and at work everyday. I couldn't be happier to not have to put up with the bloat and outright "mysterious, unnecessary, and sluggish" behavior of windows. Like installing the worm software that is basically any antivirus on the windows platform.. where the user is made aware of said software at every turn with a plethora of BS dialogs and clicks and "pop ups"... For HOT GARBAGE - it is windows that fits that bill friend. FREE YOURSELF. SWITCH TO GNU/LINUX!

1
OneBigMaga 1 point ago +1 / -0

You make web sites. You are pretty much the retard of the tech family. I'm talking about real work on a computer, like graphic design, 3d animation CAD and other things that take talent. I remember when I did 3d animation and there were constant threads on the user forums about which linux you were supposed to use this program or that program on because it wasn't compatible with all versions. There were constant threads about the problems associated with running these programs on Linux. Meanwhile I ran them on windows with no problems and didn't have to reboot to different versions every time I wanted to use a different program. Linux is garbage as a desktop operating system because it is not even compatible with itself, not to mention the terrible and over complicated setup of anything other than the most basic system.

2
ltpayne 2 points ago +2 / -0

Haha.. the retard of the tech family.. ok knockout punch! Lol. Look use whatever suits your needs bud. I really like GNU/Linux and it has more to offer than most people know. A lot of people trash Linux on the desktop that either haven't tried it or haven't tried it recently.

2
ltpayne 2 points ago +2 / -0

4
MawaDeBlanco1 4 points ago +4 / -0

I have a linux machine I love (using it now) but most of my software does not run on it. and you are incorrect about everything being web based. far from it.

Wonderfox TMM clonerbox 4k video convertor MCEBuddy every single version of Call of Duty MEMU EZGrabber BCDx36HP Chirp SDR# WinTV PowerBI - ok there is a web based version of this but you have to have more than just a phone hotspot so web based junk doesn't work for rural america.

GIMP is hot garbage. If you need graphics apps that are the bridge between awful free apps and the pricey Adobe Suite, look into the Affinity apps - Affinity Photo (Photoshop), Affinity Designer (Illustrator) and Affinity Publish (InDesign). They're $50 each, no subscription nonsense, and are solid tools, I recommend them all the time. (They go on sale for $25 each occasionally)

I've been using Autodesk Sketch, the free version, for years, for quick edits/scribbles. Simple, fast, small footprint.

Common sense + Windows Defender + occasional scans with the free version of Malwarebytes.

4
Atomstein 4 points ago +4 / -0

Sorry, but what is Avast?

5
anatidaephobia 5 points ago +7 / -2

See, when you use a flawed operating system called "Windows" created by Bill Gates, the system itself is so full of security holes that you need third party software to monitor and scan the system in real time to avoid vulnerable code entering via one of the many backdoors and vulnerabilities. Otherwise you'd get hacked and all your data stolen, leaked, your bank account drained and so on. Pretty much like Hunter Bidet.

Avast is one such third party software, which seems to suck just as much as Windows because it doesn't think you should visit this site. It wants you to stay on plebbit.

4
brassmule 4 points ago +4 / -0

Avast sea of cucks, everywhere.

But in case this was a real question, it's freeware antivirus software that used to be really really good, like 15 years ago. Nowadays not so much.

That shit doesn't even do a whole lot more than Windows Defender does on its own... why put malware on your PC to prevent malware you probably aren't going to get if you don't open unknown email or go to shady sites or run random software with questionable origins? Avast is harvesting users' browser histories on the pretext that the data has been 'de-identified,' thus protecting your privacy. But the data, which is being sold to third parties, can be linked back to people's real identities, exposing every click and search they've made.

Could it be an accident or misunderstanding though? Or is it really a woke/ideological thing?
