Damn, look at those prices.

CtBigPat 26 points ago +26 / -0

Add a zero for inflation.

And can they start making the H&R 999 again?

8
Walt_Kowalski 8 points ago +8 / -0

Those were screaming good prices back then. That was a great price for a 38spl. Even if you figure average real inflation of 10 percent per year, that’s 540 percent. 5.4 *56.5 =305.1. That’s probably a little high so figure 200 to 300 bucks in today’s money. I would totally jump on that.

Geralt_of_Rivia1 6 points ago +6 / -0

Even if you figure average real inflation of 10 percent per year, that’s 540 percent.

No, that would be 17000%

Now average inflation has been 4%, which is about 850%.

2
Walt_Kowalski 2 points ago +2 / -0

You’re right. Sometimes I’m an idiot. I didn’t compound…. Start with a buck. 1.00 x .1 = .10 so price would be 1.10 in the second year. For the following year it would be 1.10 x .1 = .11 so price would be 1.21, and so on. Derp.

Demonspawn 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yep, the formula is (cost) * (inflation) ^ (years)

6
BidensPrisonWallet 6 points ago +6 / -0

For 56.50 I'd buy every Model 10 they had.

3
24601 3 points ago +3 / -0

That's 1968 dollars, not 2022 dollars.

https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/1968?amount=56

$56 in 1968 is worth $476.82 today

Looks like 38 special runs about $600 in 2022 .... So, $56 is a good deal, but not a huge steal.

3
Agent26660 3 points ago +3 / -0

That's $476 in today's money for a .38 special

The "Let that sink in" is getting old.

Idiots wont let anything "sink in"

Just tell them the information. Either it clicks or it doesn't.

The "let that sink in" phrase is condescending and usually causes anyone to disregard the information that was presented.

18
PatRiot54 18 points ago +18 / -0

The phrase is useless when communicating to a leftist or any Dem because none of them have the brain-power to absorb anything.

2

To most ears, “let that sink in” sounds like someone saying “What I have just said is so profound you need to read it again.”

Let your words speak for you. If they’re good, people will quote you, and then it will be heard twice.

1
TommyLasordasBallBag 1 point ago +1 / -0

Thinking outside the herd, whether it be our herd or theirs, is difficult for most. Humans are pack oriented. The true revolutionaries of the world didn't have many friends. Nikola Tesla, Edison, ect didn't drain their intellectual prowess on socialization. That's why whenever I'm downvoted here, I wear it as a badge of honor. It tells me that despite this being our "herd"... we don't all have to be sheep.

Well back then even an Ivy League Madison Ave exec with a MadMen type job might only make 30k a year.

2
Geralt_of_Rivia1 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yep, I made 600 dollars a month.

Meanwhile an O-2E Navy EOD officer would be making... I want to say 140k a year now

And well, 1965 that job was a bit worse.

2
BadManOrange 2 points ago +2 / -0

True. Many people don't realize how much things have changed with the value of money. In the 90s making a six figure salary was a big deal and the equivalent of "making it" for most. Today that same 100k per year salary would be closer to 200k, yet people still have the idea of 100k being as meaningful as it once was.

simpleman1776 1 point ago +1 / -0

In the 70's, I would buy a pack of Marlboro and a can of Pepsi, hand them 1 dollar and get 10 cent back.

that pack of Marlboro today is 6 bucks and the can of Pepsi is 1.50.

Our dollar has gained on every world currency in the past year.

Yea, we're fucked.

But, everyone else is fucked so much worse.

They changed the law because of the lie that Oswald killed Kennedy with a mail order rifle

8

And the NRA advocated for that change.

A rifle he cycled 3 times in 6 seconds and somehow fired a magic bullet. Must have been one hell of a piece of kit. Man really should have needed a loisence for such an amazing instrument of death.

3
TexasBrowncoat 3 points ago +3 / -0

I remember those days! Look at old Perry Mason episodes from the 1950's and early 1960's. It seems that everyone IN CALIFORNIA kept a gun in their car glove compartment that they purchased at the local hardware store.

2

No. It was because the rifle used to kill JFK was mail ordered. That is what put an end to it.

The USPS's own website has pages dedicated towards mitigating mail theft and loss.

1
trannyqueef 1 point ago +1 / -0

There is a good point to be made in here somewhere, but were Democrats really opposed to selling guns by mail because of "fraud" and "theft?"

Seems a little bullshitty.

I seem to recall speeches about it by Tip O'Neil but I was quite young back then

1
Star_Rover73 1 point ago +1 / -0

I think what changed it was them playing up Lee Harvey Oswald and his mail order Manclicher-Carcano that he supposedly shot JFK with. We can also trace the origins of the term “conspiracy theorist” to this as well.

1
glow-operator-2-0 1 point ago +1 / -0

I miss 1894, when a Colt Single Action Army chambered for 45 Long cost only $17 by mail order from Sears & Roebuck.

1
ghost_of_aswartz 1 point ago +1 / -0

When GOP is in charge of senate and house, they should pass a law that says that the only way you can receive a mail-in ballot is with purchase of a gun; and both are subject to background check. Armed forces employees, soldiers and the like, are exempt.

You can get a mail in (absentee) ballot by going directly to your county's election office, showing proof of ID and residency and get an absentee ballot that is certified / notarized there as being received by you (like a blank check, its ballot receipient's duty to safeguard and fill out)

Absentee voting then, means you have to buy a gun, or get the absentee ballot directly from the election office

If you cannot make it to the election office, you have to fill out a "limited power of attorney for receiving an absentee ballot, but not voting on said ballot, as voting with power of attorney is not lawful" -- so the person receiving on behalf of another has to sign that they read and understand the limitation and that they are not to vote on behalf of another person unless they are physically present and you are their caretaker and they are paralyzed or otherwise physically unable to fill the ballot---in this case the proxy vote must be video recorded.
