Above 80 degrees, what's the point of A/C? Probably better to open all the windows and let the breeze blow through at that point.

Removing a lot of humidity goes a long way

70
TDS_Consultant 70 points ago +72 / -2

In humid climates AC systems do more work extracting moisture from the air than actually dropping air temp. Takes a lot of energy to phase change vapor to liquide water. Due to the humidity factor in my area, having the AC on 74F is the overnight choice unless the outside air temp gets below 55F. In other words, I don't turn off the AC in favor of cooler outside air until theres a 20 degree temp differential to make the unconditioned air tolerable for sleeping.

11

Or put a small heater near the thermostat

That’ll fool the “smart thermo” into thinking it’s hotter and the a/c will keep running.

Use electric heating to trick energy efficient thermostat into doing more electric cooling.

what exactly is a "Smart" thermostat? do you mean wi-fi enabled? controlled by the power company?

for about $6, you can buy this cute little digital temp controller that can bypass any "smart" thermostat. it's also good for building smokers, fixing old refrigerators, DIY hot tubs, etc.

may want to stock up now if they keep pushing this BS.

https://www.amazon.com/Misright-Temperature-Controller-Thermostat-50-110%C2%B0C/dp/B07P5F1QV1/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=temperature+controller+thermostat&qid=1659715589&sr=8-4

2
zooty 2 points ago +2 / -0

Until the control unit on the AC is a sealed unit and uses encryption to talk to the thermostat.

Of course, you can hopefully just put a small heater near the thermostat then but don't underestimate the government's determination to make your life suck.

8
user2827 8 points ago +8 / -0

That's not the only angle, they are also increasing the efficiency requirements of new AC systems, and looking for a replacement for R410A (propane is one alternative being considered, think about what happens if the coil leaks).

At the rate the plans are going, it won't be too much longer before AC efficiency requirements will be physically impossible to build.

3
MawaDeBlanco1 3 points ago +3 / -0

we've run propane cooling systems forever, it's not that big of a deal. people used to do their cars with propane back in the 60's and 70's. BTW, plenty of other refrigerants are also flammable.

1
user2827 1 point ago +1 / -0

Most aren't AS flammable as propane... but you're right it has been used.

2
zooty 2 points ago +2 / -0

We have a package unit and our recent replacement was about 2x the volume of the previous one because of those efficiency requirements. It's a monstrous carbuncle in comparison.

1
user2827 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yes, that sounds about right, because like with LEED standards, they only look at efficiency of individual pieces of equipment, and with all the sensors, monitors, etc they've found that it uses about 75% more power than not caring about efficiency and automation.

It's ONLY a concern for electrical efficiency, even if it needs far more materials to create that efficiency.

The Tale of Two Cities Communists:

People in Madrid in 30 to 40°F dewpoints (very dry) don't need to remove any humidity, just lower the temp a little, 80°F temp is fine when that dry. Nice, actually.

https://www.ventusky.com/?p=38.94;-2.92;6&l=dew

But those people are making the rules for people on the coasts in 70+°F dewpoints. Completely different situation. They're fucked.

Can you believe those fines? Holy shit.

1
IlhanOmarsFagBrother 1 point ago +1 / -0

Lot of poor people in Spain. I make six figures and a sudden $60,000 fine would be a fairly big problem for me. Not a disaster, but a troubling problem. What about people who are in the bottom 50%?

Just so people know there are already a lot of programs out there incentivizing the use of smart thermostats and “rebates” which allow the electricity company to have access to your thermostat for a few days a year.

It’s all about conditioning you to accept their control.

Right now you can take the rebate and disable the control whenever you want. But they assume people will hook it up and forget about it after a while.

Also some of the rebates associated with these thermostats only apply if it’s installed by a licensed contractor which is total bullshit.

Dude... my wife will open all the fricken windows of our home here in Houston when we get our first day of fall. Like clockwork I'll flip out mid-afternoon because while it's mid 60's to 70F the humidity will be north of 65% unless we've had a decent bit of high-pressure come in to block the gulf-flow from being its usual dick-downer moist self.

I actually purchased a dehumidifier after the ice storm because pipe bursts caused a good percentage of our ceiling to be left open while the plumbers and sheet rockers did their work. I shit you not my humidistat hit 80% inside and the machine ran all day. On average we would empty 15 gallons of water a day!

The reason for that is when they say 'NO' it means 'NOt yet' in their woman brain. Only after months, or years, or decades, does NO actually mean NO since when a woman said it.

7
BallsackPaneer 7 points ago +9 / -2

I do, but she forgets over the summer and like clockwork does the same exact thing every year. The solution was buying a cheap digital thermometer / humidistat to place on top of the TV console.

12
BallsackPaneer 12 points ago +17 / -5

Nah, she's not some zoomer or millennial doing shit tests as described in "hook-up culture" forums on Reddit. Forgetfulness and absentmindedness happens with age.

I've learned over the years to not always automatically attribute maliciousness to things when it's just an oversight. Ask me how many times I've said yes to the question "would you mind transferring the laundry from washer to dryer when the buzzer goes off?" only to honestly forget.

24
RachelkillsBam 24 points ago +26 / -2

she's not some zoomer or millennial doing shit tests

All women - regardless of age - do shit test.

Also, the term was not created under millennials. It was first brought up about Gen X women.

13
I_Love_45-70_Gov 13 points ago +15 / -2

rEdit was slamming theRedpill many years ago, so out of curiousity I visited the subrEdit, which is where I first heard about shit tests.

The next woman I dated became my wife. Great woman, but, like all women, she will shit test me every so often, and every time I shut that shit down asap.

Just a few months of lurking on TheRedpill changed my life for the better, as well, some their spoke highly of theDonald, which is why I am here today.

Fuck u/spez

-1
BallsackPaneer -1 points ago +3 / -4

Well she's not a Gen X either so there you go. I know what shit tests are, I see the wives of friends pull them all the time. Don't ask how many times I've heard them say "I'm just going to call a guy out to fix it" when their husbands haven't fixed something. What do they do? They get suckered in to their manliness being challenged and fix it.

3
Klown_Schwab 3 points ago +6 / -3

lol I'm a millennial it's not just on reddit forums it's a real phenomenon.

Behavior that was previously baffling to me made perfect sense after I learned of the concept.

11
BallsackPaneer 11 points ago +12 / -1

I've seen it practiced by women, and I'm of the mind that the majority of women under 30 that have grown up in woke society revert to passive-aggressive manipulation to get what they want.

I've got an incredible bullshit detector when it comes to these situations and have been blessed with a trad wife who strongly believes that a woman should never be president, abortion is not a woman's choice, and that the man must be both the physical and spiritual leader in a household. She's 100% supportive, and was 200% behind me when I stated I felt led not to get the vax even if it caused me to lose my job.

My heart goes out to men that have to deal with this or have difficulty finding women not programmed by society. The sooner we get past TJ Max artwork stating, "Happy wife, happy life", the sooner we'll focus on things that bring women true joy and love.

I've lived in hotter, drier areas, and they are so much more comfortable than a humid place. 110° with average humidity is very hot, but not disgusting. 89° with 80% humidity feels like 105°, but is sick. Nothing better than opening the front door and you're already dripping wet.

Lived in TN my whole life and bought a home last winter in NE Alabama. This has absolutely been the coolest and wettest summer I've ever experienced in my life. Why the hell is everyone so concerned about what is happening in Spain or anywhere else in Europe? They are the ones who pissed the Russians off. It's their bed let them lie in it. Since the EU became an entity they have done nothing but destroy the whole continent. Starting with unfettered immigration from muslim countries and fiscal policies on a par with Biden's.

They want you 100% under their control for basic necessities. That shit is coming our way.

Yes, in the communist-dominated Mecklenburg County NC, first they started taxing your "stormwater runoff" based on the square footage of your dwelling about 20 years ago. in FL whenever there were droughts, the counties and sometimes the state would impose arbitrary and massive restrictions on water usage, even on towns where the water was through desalinization plants.

that's insane because it should be the opposite... if you live in a town served by desalinization plants, running your sprinklers is dumping water from the plants into the aquifers, easing the drought conditions. in short, the assholes claiming to solve the problem were the ones making it worse.

I miss Internet & Web 1.0, pre-google & social network era. I could find everything I was looking for vs. being served 3 pages of search results listing the same incorrect part when I'm actually just looking for someone's installation photos and tips.

The modern web is shit, modern phones are shit to. I feel like every service or app that is mildly useful has a big privacy downside that outweighs its benefits. It's all by design. From video doorbells to autonomous vehicles, we cannot connect or roam without being tracked or having our privacy invaded. All I'm asking for is a product that does not connect to someone's cloud or allows me unmonitored use.

Ever see those key duplication kiosks? The ones that store your exact key pattern in the cloud somewhere? The first time I encountered one I said out loud, "right, like I'm really going to give an unknown company with unknown security standards access to my home". No way, never, yet people are lined up to use them.

You already have a smart meter on your house. Think the monopoly power co in your area is going to withhold your power usage info from the govt? lol. The govt and their public utilities swap body fluids all the time already.

9
freeamerica4ever 9 points ago +9 / -0

I was the only one fighting this "upgrade" in my county when they stuck a mobile signal in my house for water. This is why I didn't want it. They don't need instant measurements of our utility usage, they will only abuse it.

8
PatPede1 8 points ago +8 / -0

They can already guess which appliances are using power. My power collective already auto generates little videos detailing usage. It is great information, but creepy.

2
MauserShooter 2 points ago +2 / -0

There is a breaker for square D panels that will monitor your electrical use and give you reports. It will even figure out what is being used when not necessary and shut it off.

I will have to look it up later, I saw it at a trade show last year.

I think it expired. They already fit everything that was in it and more into other bills

7
Nomoralcompass89 7 points ago +7 / -0

This is the correct answer. The Patriot Act was allowed to sunset by the Trump administration in '17 or '18.

It only goes so far though because now big tech is far more intrusive and many people unknowingly give them even more information than could be gotten through the Patriot Act.

So you genuinely don't know if you're supposed to go do that now and then there's something else you're supposed to do tomorrow morning or if they want you to go do that tomorrow morning

I'm in the southwest desert, I have my AC kick on at 80. When there's a 40 degree differential between inside and out all the insulation in the world makes no difference, your AC will be running non-stop for hours if you try to make it cool inside.

4
TraitorJoes 4 points ago +4 / -0

I was in Mesa last summer and could not believe the poor home construction methods.

I was shocked that no one digs their homes into the dirt for a partial or full basement. Soil Temperature range from 59 to 72 degrees F depending on the season.

0
PraiseBeToScience 0 points ago +2 / -2

Having a little hobbit home would be cool. Literally.

4
tired_of_leftists 4 points ago +4 / -0

When there's a 40 degree differential between inside and out all the insulation in the world makes no difference,

Funny the people in the Midwest have no issue with a 70, 80, or more differential in the wintertime... We can keep our houses at 72 when it is minus 30 outside. Even my heat pump alone can make a 40 degree delta from outside temp quite easily even before the gas furnace kicks in.

I bet your insulation is much thinner than we have up here, and your HVAC equipment and ducting is in the 130 degree attic. I have seen on various HVAC websites the atrocities of ducting with that awful flex duct in attics and the generally poor building practices in much of the south.

1
PraiseBeToScience 1 point ago +1 / -0

Well, because heating is better than air conditioning. Natural gas is cheaper, everything in your home naturally generates heat including the people, you don't need to rely on "new" refrigerants that are less and less effective with every generation, plus your heater doesn't need to operate a heat exchanger whose efficiency is totally reliant on the outside ambient air temperature. When it's 115 outside, that heat exchanger struggles to cool down, so the unit runs longer and longer.

Also I guess this entirely depends on how much one considers 'running all day'. I mind the heater running a few times an hour less than I do the A/C.

1
SquirreleeDan 1 point ago +1 / -0

orange_popcicle 5 points ago +5 / -0

No they're not. I recently stayed at an air b&b that had one of those Nest systems. We'd be gone all day doing what we went on vacation to do, left the thermostat at a reasonable 75. Every evening when we came back the temp inside was 82+. It was a small place, but the Nest said it would take two hours to get back to the temp we set it to! Mind you, it was in the middle 90's all week with fairly low humidity, so we were really looking to get out of the heat when we got back.

10

3
tired_of_leftists 3 points ago +3 / -0

Yes, your energy supplier gives these away for cheap or free, and they have a backdoor into them.

They can shut the system off when they are having issues supplying enough energy.

They had decades to fix the infrastructure, and build power plants, but they solve it by turning off people's HVAC equipment.

A lot of older homes had a ventilation fan in hallway that pulled air in and you opened your windows to flow the outside air in so there was constant air moving throughout the house. I lived in a home like that years ago and it was really nice alternative to the AC but was really loud. It was much cheaper to run than the AC and on days that werent scorching hot, it cooled the house down a lot. I wish they would put these into homes again. I sorta miss it. Also if you burned something in your oven or whatever, it would clear smoke out quickly too.

1
Keep_on_winning_kag 1 point ago +2 / -1

To add to this, most furnaces have a fan setting, turn the fan on and it will cycle upstairs air into the basement thus pushing the cool air from the basement up to the top floor, and it's cheap.
