7
OGpsywar 7 points ago +7 / -0

There's a lot of political bribery by the 'Chinas' of the world (mostly China) to obtain third-world resources from first and second world nations.

Rather than, say, Scotland produce Products from their own tress / lumber - like a first world nation, they'd be selling their natural resourceses off - like a third world nation.

That could be some of what happened in this case. And also that whole area of the world is up its butt with 'wind power'.

2
Aoikaze2000 2 points ago +2 / -0

The irony here is that they had to remove natural CO2 scrubbers in order to put in supposedly carbon neutral green energy production.

It's also why I want to wrap my F150 in green... so I can park it in the green vehicle spaces at work.

6
Geralt_of_Rivia1 6 points ago +6 / -0

There are more trees today than there were any time in the past 200 years.

12
Trailjogger11 12 points ago +12 / -0

I used to work for the Forest Service on a timber crew in Idaho and there are actually too many trees in the dryer forests. That’s why we get devastating forest fires. Plus due to overcrowding the forests get diseased. “Environmentalists” really contributed to this by not allowing forests to be properly logged.

6
HillarysBustedDonut 6 points ago +6 / -0

Fire fighting is why. Controlled burns and brush clearing stop forests from burning down. 200 years ago they would burn for months unchallenged. Someone needs to remind regressive Cuckifornia.

2
clownworld30330 2 points ago +2 / -0

200 years ago we burned forests to make potash (fertilizer).

1
clownworld30330 1 point ago +1 / -0

Still will.

2
NZbacon 2 points ago +2 / -0

Both those are real and had proper fixes.

They took sulphur out of fuels to stop acid rain and they stopped making CFC's to let the ozone layer heal.

-2
Geralt_of_Rivia1 -2 points ago +6 / -8

We fixed acid rain by shutting down coal mines in WV and shifted to Wyoming coal which has 1/10th the sulfur content.

We stopped using CFCs too.

5
Ocineaa 5 points ago +6 / -1

You're just wrong. The scrubbing tech has been around since the 90's that pretty much negates the sulphur content. Now in steel making and other applications sulphur content matters, but the in the coal they burn to turn turbines the tech is there to burn high sulphur content coal and catch most of the pollution.

1
Geralt_of_Rivia1 1 point ago +6 / -5

Scrubbing is more expensive than getting coal from Wyoming.

On top of coal from Wyoming having 1/10th the sulfur content, Wyoming coal is cheaper than WV coal because the mines are more efficient - the mine my grandson works at does ~38 tons per man hour, while WV averages like 3 tons per man hour. State average is like 30 for Wyoming.

Which is why Wyoming has ~4900 coal miners and produces 239 million short tons, while West Virginia has ~11500 coal miners and produces 80.8 Million tons. Or put differently, 50,000 tons of coal per year per coal miner in Wyoming, 7000 tons of coal per year per coal miner in West Virginia

Also WV is unionized as all hell while the only significant union in Wyoming is an electricians union

-3
MasklessMarvel -3 points ago +0 / -3

but WV has trees and does not have Liz Cheney so fuck WY

2
Geralt_of_Rivia1 2 points ago +4 / -2

I have a tree on my ranch, and WV has Joe Manchin and actual democrats.

-1
MasklessMarvel -1 points ago +1 / -2

i had the pleasure (?) of driving I-80 across WY in a snowstorm

the road was covered and i swear if it had not been for the highway signs I could have been driving across Mars

there is nothing there

it's creepy

Joe saved us from BBB and the "voting rights" bill

he has always been a moderate who stood up for the people of WV- that's why he is the only D in a major office

i don't know what the fuck happened to him on the inflation bill but he should probably be worried about his job

2
NZbacon 2 points ago +2 / -0

You are correct. Ignore the downvotes.

They also took sulphur out of petroleum fuels.

1
MasklessMarvel 1 point ago +2 / -1

there are still lotsa coal mines in WV

3
Geralt_of_Rivia1 3 points ago +4 / -1

They produce 80.8 million short tons.

Wyoming produces 239 million short tons.

0
MasklessMarvel 0 points ago +1 / -1

We fixed acid rain by shutting down coal mines in WV

how are the WV mines producing coal if they are shut down?

4
Geralt_of_Rivia1 4 points ago +4 / -0

They arent, those ratios used to be reversed, WV shut down most of their mines.

-3
memechallenger33 -3 points ago +6 / -9

Those were both real problems that actually got solved mostly. It will still be a couple decades before the hole in ozone fully recovers because CFC’s are still leaking from old refrigerators and AC’s in landfills.

13
mastermeatlock 13 points ago +13 / -0

CFCs are still used in china it's not landfills.

11
memechallenger33 11 points ago +12 / -1

I thought they were outlawed globally, even in China.

https://m.dw.com/en/ozone-layer-recovery-back-on-track-after-china-slows-cfc-11-production/a-56540342

Looks like you were right, there were still doing it illegally, and now have “decreased” (ie, not fully stopped). Just when you think China is asshoe… they prove us right again. I’m tired of winning this one.

Bahahaha

"China, good stewards of mother nature"

2
Geralt_of_Rivia1 2 points ago +4 / -2

Why would China be paying extra on CFCs to not poison their employees rather than spending 10 cents on the dollar and using anhydrous ammonia?

-2
Geralt_of_Rivia1 -2 points ago +5 / -7

Pollution does not mean production, most likely that just means the factories vented their AC units straight into the air - and yes, factories have AC units to prevent humidity from fucking with things, that is the original purpose of AC.

1
clownworld30330 1 point ago +1 / -0

China wouldn't cheat reeeeeeeeer

0
MasklessMarvel 0 points ago +2 / -2

CFCs are still used in china

i thought dishes were basically made from clay

-8
Geralt_of_Rivia1 -8 points ago +2 / -10

China doesnt use CFCs, at least any real amount. CFCs are a safety chemical, if you dont care about safety you use anhydrous ammonia which is 1/10th the cost.

4
-1
Geralt_of_Rivia1 -1 points ago +3 / -4

When you replace the refrigerant in an AC in China, you vent it. Do that in the US and the EPA fines the fuck out of you. Doesnt mean production, just means that the AC units they have had running for 20 years still have CFCs.

4
mastermeatlock 4 points ago +4 / -0

"Further detective work in China by the Environmental Investigation Agency in 2018 seemed to indicate that the country was indeed the source. They found that the illegal chemical was used in the majority of the polyurethane insulation produced by firms they contacted.

One seller of CFC-11 estimated that 70% of China's domestic sales used the illegal gas. The reason was quite simple - CFC-11 is better quality and much cheaper than the alternatives."

From the bbc article I linked.

2
NZbacon 2 points ago +2 / -0

memechallenger33 12 points ago +12 / -0

Back in the 70’s they were fearful of global cooling and the coming ice age.

https://patriotpost.us/opinion/17032-a-compilation-of-news-articles-on-the-global-cooling-scare-of-the-1970-s-2013-03-04

Of course, what no one wants us to notice is that the earth is still coming out of an ice age, which is obvious because there is still ice at the polar caps.

“ Earth is currently in the midst of an ice age, as the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets remain intact despite moderate temperatures.“

I remember a rabbit whole regarding that, but can't find any info on it now.

It was the US that put money into building roads into the rainforest in south americans in the late 70s.

What did we expect them to do with these new accesses to acres and acres of forested land?

Deforestation to create farmlands of course.

To which our government immediately cranked out the "muh deforestation" propaganda in response.

My neighbor did something similar She cut down all of the trees on a large portion of her property. She got paid with a grant for installing solar panels that move to follow the sun. She is on our conservation commission.

7
Geralt_of_Rivia1 7 points ago +7 / -0

Solar doesn't make sense for grid level electricity until you find some way of fixing the duck curve.

6
Littleirishmaid 6 points ago +6 / -0

The whole thing is hypocritcal.

4
akira2501 4 points ago +4 / -0

find some way of fixing the duck curve.

I honestly don't think you can. Electrical demand and solar availability will always have this offset into the evening hours. You're going to need natural gas or pumped hydro to make it work. CA has this issue and they mostly rely on NG plants coming online in the evening to make up the difference.

Or, batteries.. but we're about 10 to 20 years out on that, at least.

2
Geralt_of_Rivia1 2 points ago +2 / -0

You are presuming storage is needed, rather than using excess for some chemical process - for instance the Ostwald process. We need fertilizer and at current fertilizer prices that would be pretty damn profitable.

So make the landfill where the soil is already toxic. The giant wind turbine landfill people talk to that is right next to a giant lake of petroleum runoff - and they chose to dump the petroleum runoff into the lake because the lake was already toxic due to its natural alkali content.

4
DickTick 4 points ago +4 / -0

To be fair, on our side at least, the trees are constantly replenished..... They have fast growing varieties that allows them to cycle through different pieces of property every 10 or 15 years. Obviously they offset them so that now after all these decades they are pretty much constantly harvesting and with other land constantly being replanted.

We're not talking as if they are decimating old growth forests here...... we're talking about trees that were specifically grown for this purpose in most cases.....

5
Cesare_Borgia 5 points ago +5 / -0

Yes, trees grow faster in the Southeast US than in most places. I believe Georgia produces more trees used for paper production than any other state.

10

2
Geralt_of_Rivia1 2 points ago +2 / -0

Trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen and thereby remove carbon from the atmosphere.

And unless you cut them down then have them made into plywood on a factory ship off the coast of California by some Phillipinos, where the waste gets dumped off the ship and remains in an dark, cold, anerobic environment at the bottom of the ocean, the wood just rots.

Which puts all of that carbon dioxide right back into the air.
