What's the movie?

21
HeavyMetalPatriot 21 points ago +22 / -1

Starship Troopers - great book, fun movie.

12
PhilosoGuido 12 points ago +12 / -0

Paul Verhoeven hated Heinlein's book and made the movie to be an absurd jingoistic parody.

14
IRemoveKebab 14 points ago +15 / -1

He failed though. Watch the movie again. He fucked up so bad that the movie came out picture perfect. Any attempt at claiming it is satire is a sad low energy attempt at covering up that sorry fuckers failure. Book good. Movie good. Life gud.

6
PhilosoGuido 6 points ago +6 / -0

I've read the book and watched the movie several times. The book is much much better. And I'm not the one claiming it's satire, that's what Verhoeven himself claimed. Whether or not you think he failed is your opinion. I'm just informing people what his intentions were.

4
ItsOkayToBeWight 4 points ago +4 / -0

Wouldn't surprise me me if he was coerced into claiming satire. Look at They Live: It's a perfect allegory for the modern world. But despite how fitting the allegory is, the director insists it's was about capitalism and not a group of people living among us and manipulating us to their own ends.

2
IRemoveKebab 2 points ago +3 / -1

Your lack of rejection makes me question your motives. Lenin intended to create utopia. Do I miss a chance to mock him and his ilk as failures? FUCK NO!

1
PhilosoGuido 1 point ago +1 / -0

I'm providing factual information. If that it offends you and you "question my motives," I couldn't care less what you think of my motives. Who are you that I should care?

1
xBigCoffinHunter 1 point ago +1 / -0

I hate this book so much I’m going to make it a movie. Sounds like that dude had issues

1
PhilosoGuido 1 point ago +1 / -0

Not that confusing. The guy likes making money and adapting a successful book is a tried and true way to make some.

5
NeoDragoon 5 points ago +5 / -0

Picture perfect?

Where's the power armor? Why are the Mobile Infantry called "apes"? When does Rico's father die? Is Neil Patrick Harris's character supposed to be alive at the end? What would the Federation do if someone, who was a cripple bound to a wheelchair, wanted to volunteer for service?

3
deleted 3 points ago +3 / -0

6daysandrest 3 points ago +4 / -1

"Come on you apes, do you wNt to live forever!" Is written towards the front of the book and cited as a quote from a Roman general.

Neil Patrick Harris's character dies from a bug rock bombardment on a planet. He's an afterthought casualty.

The Federation recruiter was wheel chair bound, missing multiple limbs while on duty as a recruiter but used powered prosthetics when he wasn't putting on the horror show to gut-check prospective recruits.

The service made places for anyone. Some were used for testing experimental survival gear in harsh environments and others were lab rats. Those with an inkling of sense were used elsewhere.

1
NeoDragoon 1 point ago +2 / -1

Since you want to edit your post and apparently don't understand the question.

Why are the Mobile Infantry called "apes"?

From page 126. "No need to describe what it looks like, since it has been pictured so often. Suited up, you look like a big steel gorilla, with gorilla sized weapons. (this may be why a sergeant generally opens his remarks with "You apes-" However it seems more likely that Caesar's sergeants used the same honorific.)

When does Rico's father die?

Trick question, he doesn't. From page 335. ""Right away Father." I gave him a quick hug, let the Navy drop crew seal us in. The shakes didn't start up again. Shortly I was able to report: "Bridge! Rico's Roughnecks...ready for drop!"

Is Neil Patrick Harris's character supposed to be alive at the end?

Partial credit, you didn't answer that one until after your edit.

What would the Federation do if someone, who was a cripple bound to a wheelchair, wanted to volunteer for service?

Another trick question, because it's usually extrapolated from the following quote on page 37. "So for those who insist on serving their term - but haven't got what we want and must have - we've had to think up a whole list of dirty, nasty, dangerous jobs that will either run 'em home with their tails between their legs and their terms uncompleted...or at least make them remember for the rest of their lives that their citizenship is valuable to them because they've paid a high price for it."

Verhoeven is such a goddamn genius he tries to make a bad movie and it still comes out great.

1
TheDTOMDon 1 point ago +1 / -0

I listened to the directors commentary along with the movie once. It’s verhoeven shitting on the US for most of the movie, it’s unintentionally hilarious.

7
Wenger 7 points ago +7 / -0

He admits that he didn't even read the book. Starship Troopers movie is something I would call the Ron Swanson effect. Ron is an over the top parody of a hardcore libertarian. You aren't supposed to agree with him but you do. Leftists don't understand rightwing ideas. There's something intrinsically different in their brains. When they try to mock them they make them more endearing. You don't see anyone identifying with Meathead even tho Archie Bunker is meant to be the strawman.

2
HeavyMetalPatriot 2 points ago +2 / -0

Agreed, but he ended up making the book more popular.

4
kxitx 4 points ago +4 / -0

the anime was pretty good as well (the story does however feel a bit rushed mostly due to only having 6 episodes but its a bit closer to the original book)

2
ManOfTheWeast 2 points ago +2 / -0

What book and movie is it?

6
Brellin 6 points ago +6 / -0

Starship Troopers, the movie is great and is satire done right.

4
Sarsen1776 4 points ago +4 / -0

The book is better, but.. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is even better - Author is Robert Heinlein.

2
Ch8ins8w 2 points ago +2 / -0

Thanks! I just ordered The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

-2
IRemoveKebab -2 points ago +2 / -4

Wrong! It is satire done wrong! Which makes it faithful to the subject material... On accident!!! Forever let that haunt Verhophen or how ever the fuck you spell that pussies name!!!

3
cosmicspiritwarrior 3 points ago +3 / -0

Starship Troopers

The director of the movie read ~ one chapter of the book and threw it in the garbage and made a parody of what he thought it was about.

5
IRemoveKebab 5 points ago +5 / -0

And he fucked up so God damn bad that he made a faithful representation of the source material.... On accident! Never let lefties live it down! RAH out thought the bug, even from the grave!!!

1
cosmicspiritwarrior 1 point ago +1 / -0

a faithful representation of the source material....

the ideas and themes yes, but the plot and story diverge completely.

As an example, the movie had masses of humans with quite ineffective guns going against masses of bugs. The book IIRC had small teams in mech suits flying around raining nukes on the bugs quite effectively.

About the only thing from the book that made it into the movie was the existence of the bugs, and rico taking over the roughnecks.

Michael Ironside is great at everything he's in. Scanners, V, Total Recall, etc...

5
allidoiswin 5 points ago +5 / -0

Scanners is the one I've never seen, though I'm led to believe he says his sst line "it sucked his brains out" in that one too, making sst even more amazing with the previous movie callback. I was enamored with him since a kid watching v.

4

5
YaharaRiver 5 points ago +5 / -0

My libtard neighbor used the word "faggot" correctly in a sentence a few days ago. Is he leaving the plantation by using it? because I can't always tell when he's being genuine or not. I laughed and said, "Did you just say faggot?", he goes "Yeah?" and keeps on with his story. Libtards habitually self-censor, so I'm not really sure if it was authentic or used to test me. I can't remember anything else about his story, just this part.

6
Pepper2 6 points ago +6 / -0

If you use the term faggot and you aren't a faggot....well...that's reaching out to a neighbor

2

It shocks me that to this day there are people that don't understand that the Starship Troopers movie was satire poking fun at fascism and authoritarianism.

3
IRemoveKebab 3 points ago +4 / -1

Because they fucking failed at the satire. Don't try and coddle the leftist fucks who think it was successful satire. Rub it in their fucking faces.

3
PraiseBeToScience 3 points ago +3 / -0

I mean, if you only saw it when you were a teenager or something when it came out in the 90s, it may have gone over your head because of all the boobs and kickass violence, watching it as an adult it's absurdly over-the-top and in your face.

The actual failure of the movie is that Verhoeven's "fascist dystopia" turned out to probably be a highly functional society (even though the entire movie is supposed to be a fake propaganda film ala Triumph of the Will) and if you combine it with the book, well, a "benevolent fascist republic" with a strong sense of civic duty and a society organized around nationalism looks way better than the shithole we're living in now.

Hell the entire idea fascinates me of "Service Guarantees Citizenship". Nobody is born a citizen, you have to earn it. If you never earn it, that's fine, most people don't, but you are subject to limited rights in ways that aren't particularly "oppressive". You don't get to vote, you are subject to things like government fertility program limitation, certain jobs aren't accessible to you, but you still can own property and work and earn a living and such. And you don't have to 'earn' citizenship through being meat fodder in the Mobile Infantry (which in the book weren't lives thrown away like they were in the movie), you could do lots of things, but the point was that citizenship was only for people who meaningfully gave up of themselves for the collective good of the society itself.

Shit I'm more than fine with that system right now. People on any kind of welfare assistance program should have absolutely zero right to vote until they've worked their way off those programs. None, whatsoever.

sir this is how i usually get banned. civilians respect the suppression, the censorship, to keep their accounts. shitposters live on the edge!

note, this also applies to pdw if you dare disagreeing with mods alts and make fun of it. dont do that. civilians would never do that.

1

Wrong trooper! The movie failed to mock! Every core element of the book was present in that movie, the Marxist simply thought he could dress up the cast as space Nazis and it would kill the message. Never give them the fucking win on this. Anyone who claims the film is satire is to be told the way, and questioned hard if he doubles down.

Satire is their pathetic attempt at turning a loss into a win.
