How do you do anything productive when you're more worried about having "matcha" whatever the fuck that is, fancy food for lunch, going to a meditation room and then getting red wine on tap and heading up to the roof to play hackey sack?! What "projects" are you banging out in < 1hr "meetings" in IT? Nothing you'd consider a "project" is a quick 1hr bang out to production.

This is basically college weekends for these people. When do they actually...do work?

user365927285937 -2 points ago +4 / -6

By saying “I couldn’t do what you do” she is directly acknowledging that there is a factor of commitment, diligence and work involved with raising kids. That’s not condescending it’s more like an admission that it is in fact hard work and she really couldn’t do it or chooses not to.

I mean, when I tell a butcher or portapotty cleaner than I couldn’t do what they do, it’s an acknowledgement.

Who knows though maybe they are both assholes meant for each other and I’m projecting my kindness into others 🤷‍♂️

1
Necrovoter 1 point ago +1 / -0

CONCERN FOR OTHER OPINIONS,

Oops, you completely missed it. Pattern recognition. Guess what, you don't have a enough of it. Why? Because the woman who recognized the other person's opinion was looking at whether the other person was a benefit or a risk to them. If the person is undermining them in person, are they doing other things they don't know about behind their back? Is this person telling lies about them?

Look at Trump's tweets. Look at Trump's comments when someone said something disrespectful to Trump. Did President Trump take those insults and put them into some stupid ball of energy and let them float away?

Nope. He ripped into the fuckers.

Learn from Trump.

In case you weren't politically aware (or still under the spell of MSM news) during Trump's presidency, here's a good example:

Martha Raddatz of ABC asked former General Stanley McChrystal “Do you think he’s a liar?”

McChrystal relied “I don’t think he tells the truth.”

When Raddatz asked whether McChrystal considers the president “immoral,” the former general replied, “I think he is.”

Trump replied in a tweet:

“‘General’ McChrystal got fired like a dog by Obama, Last assignment a total bust. Known for big, dumb mouth. Hillary lover!”

Thing is, it's a tech company. They don't make anything or provide real service. Once the code is written, it actually takes VERY LITTLE effort to maintain. They probably use google ore AWS cloud services, so they've probably got very minimal server infrastructure save for the network for internals. Other than that, no one really does shit but "monitor" for "hate speech".

40
resoluteAction 40 points ago +40 / -0

This is only true because these companies are quasi monopolies. If they were broken up and forced to compete, they'd be much busier, and less compensated.

NotProgCensored 2 points ago +2 / -0

6
AVeryNakedMan 6 points ago +6 / -0

The monopolies largely form because of the network effect, which keeps competition from growing.

For example, tons of people have made Facebook clones, but nobody wants to leave the real Facebook for a clone that offers identical (or worse) services but with far fewer people to use it with. So Facebook dominates.

The network effect is like economies of scale, but on steroids.

If you split up Twitter into 5 identical sites, it's likely that 4 would die off and 1 would prevail, due to everyone leaving the 4 for the biggest 1 due to the natural desire to use the most popular version of the site.

1
Burritoqueen 1 point ago +1 / -0

Well, it's not for lack of trying.

Context: One suggested solution to Big Tech strangleholds on free speech is to have a standard communication protocol that provides resistance to Big Tech censorship at the end user level, i.e. email but with zero expectation of privacy.

1
MasklessMarvel 1 point ago +3 / -2

Twitter has a shitty UI. I don't complain too much cause it helps keep me off of it but it's really bad. This seems to be true of several of the major tech companies. All of Google's stuff is well below (competent) industry standard. Facebook at least tried but has failed horribly.

12
visorak 12 points ago +12 / -0

Not only that, they change their UIs frequently, in some clown world inversion of the concept "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Makes me wonder if becoming familiar with the layout of a website lets you ingore advertisements better. Or possibly something more sinister.

6
Zelenskyscockholster 6 points ago +6 / -0

5
NonyaDB 5 points ago +5 / -0

It's the infamous "Rule of Threes" that almost all Silicon Valley UI designers adopted long ago.
Basically if it takes more than 3 clicks to get to something in your interface then "you've fucking failed as a UI designer."
That's why almost all social media sites have such flat interfaces and are littered with on-screen buttons.

Only Microsoft's admin interfaces for various cloud services (Exchange Online, Azure, O365 Admin, etc.) have resisted that trend to the point of being completely confusing and rage-inducing. I mean seriously, it takes about an hour and a hundred clicks just to put an Exchange Online user's mailbox in litigation hold and then export it to a PST file, which is why shitloads of admins end up passing around the same PowerShell script that does all that shit automatically in the background.

And every other week some Microsoft flunky will randomly change the menu interface where the "litigation holds" menu lives just to have a fresh bullet-point on his next employee performance review.

Elon's already publicly stated that he wants Twitter to become the American version of China's WeChat.

Basically he's going to graft on a mobile payments system to Twitter and try to get everything in the U.S. to use it.

Why do you think he's making statements that no one should be permanently banned from Twitter and doesn't like all the bots on the platform?

Because the bots won't spend money and the fewer users there are the less his dream of an American WeChat has to come true.

Yup. Between the AdGuard Home docker container I've got running on my NAS running encrypted DNS queries through my no-logs NextDNS account - both of which do ad blocking and filtering - and Ublock Origin in an Ungoogled-Chromium browser and all traffic going round-robin through two different VPNs every other hour, trying to serve me ads or track what I do online is fairly useless for Silicon Valley.

Hell, I'm borderline goddamn toxic for ad companies. If everyone in the USA had the same setup I do then the entire "internet advertising" market would die within a month.

the office layouts are relatively modern compared to everything else, they're cube farms

thing is that the interiors were never modified so you have things like the light switch for the entire office being in someone's cube

about the only facilities provided for the employees are a kitchen with a microwave, fridge, and vending machine

You’re so right! Especially since this Twitter employee emphasized the perks and not her work. Wonder if she will keep her cushy job after Elon takes over.

12
MauserShooter 12 points ago +12 / -0

I am going to bet not.

4
spelunking_librator 4 points ago +8 / -4

She will not. Elon put Home Depot valves into the Falcon rocket, while the whole space industry used pricey special made valves. He built a mapping company living in the office on a $1 per day allowance for a hotdog. He slept on a factory floor to bring Model 3 to the market. He did not cash his salary from Tesla, which was the minimum required by law. She will not keep her cushy "job". He'll optimize the fuck out of her "job".

0
Cantshadowbanthemall 0 points ago +2 / -2

He used Lee precision for valves, what the fuck are you talking about?

3

yeah, have fun being taken care of for the rest of your usefulness, where the only work you do is sucking your master's dick in order to keep your cushy lifestyle. this is the company programming you. when it comes time for you to do a job, you will censor and delete anybody they want you to because as a "people" you believe that they have "the people's" best interest in mind. you will honestly believe that if they only had control over the entire world everybody would be able to live like you. you won't realize that you're just a house slave whose only purpose is to agree with and do everything they tell you. it's fucking pathetic and weak and people who do this belong on the fucking wall along with their masters.

Most of them don't go down in the mine anymore. They operate machinery via remote control.

10
Geralt_of_Rivia1 10 points ago +10 / -0

My state is number one in coal mining and it is all strip mining, no remote controls. Just an excavator with the bucket the size of a small house and mining trucks that are truly massive

1
Forgotmyname 1 point ago +1 / -0

I don’t know of any mines that the equipment is ran remotely from outside. I think some long wall shears are operated outside on monitors but there’s still people working on those long walls. But you can’t have a long wall without miner sections and those are exclusively ran with ass in the seat. Or with continuous miner you’d be standing beside it with a remote. It’s not as easy to get lost after you’ve been some years in down there. Becomes second nature.

1

I like to kid but no seriously thanks to REMOTE VEHICLE CONTROL coal mining employees are about 90% less than what they used to be.

We used to send CHILDREN into coal mines to die, so don't get all "I'm a fucking coal miner" with me. My father came home black from a coal mine every single night when I was a child before my mom made him change his job because she was SCARED he would die.

I can name the goddamn mine and the tragedy that scared my mom.

4
Forgotmyname 4 points ago +4 / -0

Yeah well it’s not thanks to remote vehicle control. It’s thanks to mother fuckers attacking the coal industry.

Where are all the remote vehicle control underground mines?

-2
4
Forgotmyname 4 points ago +4 / -0

I didn’t say it wasn’t a fucking thing now did I? It’s just not what sent “90%” of coal miners home.

Obama and other environmentalists did that.

Now it isn't necessarily that hard of work - driving a CAT 797F all day isn't a horrible job - but it is all real work.

5
N7fury 5 points ago +5 / -0

That's similar to the shifts at the paper mill near where I live. The 7-day off period doesn't sound bad to me. The only downside is that it is a swing shift, which I hear you never get used to

4
Geralt_of_Rivia1 4 points ago +4 / -0

Oh, it isnt swing shifts, it is just working all day, shifts are from 14 hours to 40 hours.

They get about 40 tons of coal per man hour out of that seam.

I would say even the tech work force is getting lean, but she will probably get some type of balance sheet position. I know what you are thinking, "Jesus, LawlAndDiscorder you are a handsome bastard!" I know, but lets try to stay on topic. There are a number of positions that do absolutely jack and shit besides check some boxes. Like a program manager who may be doing some compliance non-sense or 'helping' a team with a project. Because these people were absolutely useless at my last company we had a whole division. Most of them can't even make the check-boxes and use the work a straight while male did sometime ago. You can tell that every one of them is an idiot because it is the most diverse of teams. Lord help you if they get a bad spread sheet because they will ask you for the status of something every day that can't be completed for weeks. Tech writers are other favorite balance sheet employee as they think they are helping by forcing you to rewrite everything they produce.

All these perks exist because big tech wanted their employees to basically live in the office and work all day into the night. The thought was they'd put in more hours on work total, even if they took breaks in between. Twitter apparently forgot about the "work" part of that.

24
SordidPontification 24 points ago +25 / -1

If they have extra wide chairs, they probably have extra wide toilets with wiping sticks.

You need an oversized toilet or extra wide toilet if you weigh at least 300 pounds. Even though extra-large toilets are not as common as standard toilets, the few oversized toilet models available in the market can withstand a weight of up to 800 pounds. Oversized toilets have a large surface area on the toilet seat, allowing heavy people to have an amazing user experience. Standard toilets are unsuitable for heavy people because individuals who fall in this weight category often find it cumbersome to use the toilets. Additionally, heavy people can damage standard toilets, particularly if the toilets do not have the required load-bearing capacity.

BobSux 11 points ago +11 / -0

Sure, cafeteria is fine, but yes make them pay for their own food.

6
Geralt_of_Rivia1 6 points ago +7 / -1

Eh, paying for food is a decent perk and people are often more productive if they eat. Fancy chicken and rice with vegetable isn't that expensive for a cafeteria to do, especially when the average employee being kept on has a pay rate of about 90 an hour

1
BobSux 1 point ago +2 / -1

I don't care about how much it costs Elon. I just want these liberals who think that they deserve catering to quit.

2
Geralt_of_Rivia1 2 points ago +2 / -0

He is just going to fire the diversity hires. It is nearly universally better to fire someone than force them to quit

1
dontdrinksoy 1 point ago +1 / -0

Sure, cafeteria is fine, but yes make them pay for their own food.

They are paying for their own food.

8
Geralt_of_Rivia1 8 points ago +10 / -2

Cafeterias are often contractors and profitable in their own right.

8
UnderPressure1776 8 points ago +8 / -0

Dude, I get a half hour lunch break for 8 hours of work. You're still treating them with kid gloves :)

1
Lordkek 1 point ago +1 / -0

When I worked on an assembly line we did a straight 8 with a 20 minute lunch. 6:00am to 2:00pm. Lol

3
Motherslut 3 points ago +3 / -0

What’s a lunch break? Lol. Haven’t had one of those since I started my career.

2
Totally_Not_FBI 2 points ago +2 / -0

A lot cheaper to have these losers quit than to fire them.

Yeah this is California. They Have all these perks to keep young people in the job. Toms shoes, just like this, Free coffee bar bring your pet to work. game rooms. free drinks once a month. friends and family day get 80 percent off. Friendsgiving party on thanksgiving week.

20
RealRedneck 20 points ago +20 / -0

Yep. We hired a web design company that was Cali-based. It ended with a material breach of contract and a six figure refund. I literally sat down and built a website that met our contract requirements in two days. They had been ignoring basic requests and change orders for two years! Luckily, we owned the domain and the DNS. I just pointed it to the site I built without notifying them. The next day they had the audacity to post my site on their social media as an advertisement of their awesome work! Our legal team had a field day.

8
user365927285937 8 points ago +9 / -1

Six figure... goodness gracious. For a website?

9
visorak 9 points ago +9 / -0

You remember how much they spend on the Obamacare website? It didn't even work!

5
KekistanPM 5 points ago +5 / -0

That's peanuts. The Obamacare site cost what, two billion?

6
Totally_Not_FBI 6 points ago +6 / -0

They got some Chinese intern to do it for free. The two billion was all graft.

1
RealRedneck 1 point ago +1 / -0

That was over the course of the multi-year service contract, them flying out to produce marketing videos and stock photography, and also integration with our ordering system on the wholesale side. It was a massive case of overselling and underdelivering. They kept delaying the last two parts of the contract and were horrible with even basic updates. Since that time the company has gone bankrupt and "rebranded".

It turns out it was cheaper to send me to some online marketing conferences, brush up on my web design skills, and buy our own camera equipment. We host our current site on Squarespace and I do the bulk of our photography and video. I was just working on rewiring a server rack and got a text to update store hours for the fall.

FireannDireach 18 points ago +18 / -0

A lot of companies have been quietly cutting perks like that, over the last couple of years. Wearing flip flops in, and letting them brings dogs are free, but the free food and such has been cut back. I've heard spoiled "tech" workers complain about it bitterly on BART.

3
Sky_RPL 3 points ago +7 / -4

Some of the perks have been curtailed because the IRS rightly started clamping down on them as untaxed compensation.

25
FormerGraveheart 25 points ago +25 / -0

There's nothing right about what the IRS does.

4
TruthyBrat 4 points ago +4 / -0

My wife worked for an early very successful tech company in the late 80s. They literally hid the company cafeteria from the IRS auditor, didn't let him in that part of the building. Brought him a mundane sandwich and chips for lunch. Wouldn't do for him to see lobster bisque as soup of the day, or the dessert automat machine with things like strawberry cheesecake and chocolate mousse.

3
rebelde_sin_causa 3 points ago +4 / -1

I'm not seeing any of this stuff as a bad thing. Work shouldn't be a dungeon. God knows I've worked in enough of those. The issue here isn't perks. The issue is Twatter is a moneylosing black hole that only stays afloat on free money from the government and nobody does anything of value.

9
Maga2020Maga2020 9 points ago +9 / -0

What we saw was over the top stupidity.

This is not a workplace its a playground where 'work' might happen.

1
RealRedneck 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yep. My office is comfortable. I get to decorate it how I want. Tons of plants, family photos, minifridge, microwave, and coffee maker. However, I bought all of those extras myself. Also, I like having a comfortable office because my job requires long hours and quite a bit of problem solving. Sometimes I just have to set and think about a solution before working out a plan of action.

16
akira2501 16 points ago +16 / -0

If that was your college, you actually went to a boutique degree mill. I'm not insulting your or anyone's education, because they still do good subjects in those places from time to time, but if that was your experience, you were not the student they were targeting and colleges shouldn't even look like that.

8

I can guarantee you that the meeting she was in with those 3 diverse females was probably either about the engineers actually doing work, OR about literal retarded initiatives such as "Diverse Femtech Trivia" night-- and no I'm not fucking joking

2
spelunking_librator 2 points ago +2 / -0

The mood when you grind a literal metal in the workshop and in comes a woman to check whether your tools are in order and the yellow lines on the floor are bright enough. Oh, what's that? Why the grinder is not in it's dedicated place on the shelf? Oh, you were wo... wor... working? What do you mean "working"? What is "working"? Put the grinder where it belongs. Your workshop has to be in order. And making sure of it, now that is a hard work for a separate, incompetent person.

"hello, anyone who has used any of the entertainment perks previously provided in the office is fired, anyone who has used the cafeteria more than once in a day ever is fired. If you've used the yoga studio, you're fired. If you've used the nap pod or meditation room within regular business hours ever, you are fired. Thank you."

He'd be down to the 10% of people who actually do the work. He'd also make a bunch of people reee out and quit, the ones who don't act all crazy can probably stay in the end regardless of the aforementioned criteria. See how long they last.

A threat to workers at Twitter is a threat to Twitter’s future. These threats have an impact on us as workers and demonstrate a fundamental disconnect with the realities of operating Twitter. They threaten our livelihoods, access to essential healthcare, and the ability for visa holders to stay in the country they work in. We cannot do our work in an environment of constant harassment and threats.

I hope you understand the joke here. SJW's prop up all other "oppressed" religious groups and hate Christianity. This slogan was created as a joke to make SJWs minds explode because islam says a woman is worth less than a man, but SJWs are feminists. So SJWs simultaneously support people who follow a religion that is anti-woman and anti-gay.

Red wine on tap? I appreciate their attempt to give staff the ability to maximize their performance by engaging the 'ballmer peak' effect, but it takes calibration.

8

It looks miserable to me but only because I'd get bored to death quickly.

One time my employer was transferring me to another project, and the process took days during which I had almost nothing to do but read vague design specs over and over again. I was legit frustrated I couldn't do anything useful...and then when they finished and the work started pouring in...I got frustrated because I was used to sitting on my ass doing almost nothing!

Welcome to FAANG. They over-indulged themselves like the start-up culture with freebies and self-indulgent things like "meditation rooms", but they started cutting back on that hard across the board the last couple of years. Twitter was one of the last walled gardens, and the snowflakes and diaper babies are not going to be happy at the lack of ass patting and perks that are now becoming the norm again.

This is what liberals do, when they build themselves special walled gardens - the best of everything, just because they exist, and got hired into the ultimate high school clique there is. The smugness is thicker than the smog in the bay area.

Elon is going to make them cry hard, if they don't get immediately fired. I've heard from tesla employees, Elon is not the nicest guy around when it comes to his workers.
