I think if this were to happen, they go full Australia and try to ban math (encryption), unless they're given keys. No way they let him launch his own devices along side his own network. Way too much freedom for their comfort. It'll be blacklisted along side Huawei.

imagine in 2015 trying to tell somebody that the largest app store companies were going to ban one of the largest social media networks on the planet because it wouldn't censor opponents of the Democrat Party

which is what this was always about. Democrats being extremely threatened by anybody who could criticize them on the Internet and demanding that dissidence of the corrupt government be censored..

but imagine talking about this like it's normal. that's what the problem is. that you see this shit as normal. the largest app stores for the biggest phone manufacturers Manning and the top social media Network in the world because it won't run cover for the Democrat Party

people talk about the hunter Biden laptop story like it's normal for the largest social media networks in the world to just censor news stories that are damaging to the political party that they support..

you talk about that like it's fucking normal. you've normalized it. you go back to 2015 and tell somebody that shit they'll ask you what the fuck you're smoking. that's not normal stuff

and we were ringing the alarm bells trying to nip it in the bud before it got that bad but conservatives wanted to be lazy

and now you're at a point where someone openly declaring that social media will censor an entire political party to benefit the other political party is just fucking normal everyday stuff to you..

Brother I was screeching about this in the 90s. It IS normal. This is the way evil operates, the prince of this world is the father of lies. It's ALWAYS been that way.

That it happens to have concentrated itself politically is no surprise, it's just a modern manifestation.

It's always been this way. We've turned a blind eye to evil calling it just another way of living. Our modern sensibilities are going to get us killed.

See, that always irked me. Many conservative pundits have their bank accounts cancelled, their credit cards suspended and banned from other services, put on no fly list and if they try to create their own social media site, get more or less kicked off the app stores (parler, gab, gettr). Yet somehow Trump was immune to all that? The banks didn't cancel his accounts? He wasn't banned from owning a credit card? His app wasn't thrown off the app store?

What alternate reality have you been living in that you think they haven't been trying to get to Trump every way they can. They raided his freaking home. Brazenly stole his second term. Blame him for everything. Tried their best to cancel him. And you're irked he's not on a no fly list? Wtf has happened to this site? Maybe just maybe those pundits aren't at the same level as Trump. It's like asking why a hyena will attack a lioness but runs like bitch when the male comes around.

Its not just that search engines are shit now, the content on the web is shit now. Back in the 2000's you could search for just about anything and you'd find a forum dedicated to that topic or hobby full of knowledgeable people and thousands of posts with info.

Today you'll get clickbait youtube videos, Tiktok videos, or advertisements disguised as blogs that you have to wade through pages or minutes of filler just to find the info you need (if its even there).

Indeed. I'm launching a video game soon, and I got to work setting up a domain and website for it - only to realize when it was all done, that it would all be for nothing. Who goes to websites anymore? If people want to see your product, they'll go to youtube. If people want to talk with you about your product, they'll reach out on twitter or email. For on-going discussion, they'll have a Discord server. To host and sell the game, it'll all be on Steam or EGS or some such. I could not think of a single reason why I even bothered setting up the website, besides simply wanting one.

Amazon Web Services generate their profits. Been that way for years. It's mind blowing how much of the interwebs and technology they control. They even control crypto - over 60% of Ethereum nodes are on AWS. Muh, decentralization!

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– DannyCanusa 4 points 67 days ago +4 / -0

I didn't know this. I totally believe you, as I'm in the freight business. I know Amazon fucks over people who've bought 10+ trucks (or whatever amount) to deliver their products.

If they can find a cheaper way themselves, or find someone else who will do it for less, they'll F you over in a split second.

I'm not sure it still applies, but I know drivers who had a route. Ya get paid the same ($150) if you do it in 10 hours, 8 hours, or 6 hours. So as the guys got good, rather than being rewarded for efficiency, Amazon would say "oh, you can deliver more than we thought. Let us add 20 stops to your route."

I don't think they still do that, but they used to.

Do you have any links? All I have is word of mouth and the occasional FB post.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– mct1 4 points 67 days ago +4 / -0

Oh they definitely still do that. They've been slowly ramping up how many stops they expect drivers to take on. Result: Constant turnover in drivers. Does Amazon care? Nope. Not in the slightest. Always more where they came from as far as they're concerned.

Don't even get me started on how broken Mentor is.

▲ 3 ▼
– BadManOrange 3 points 67 days ago +3 / -0

Amazon makes money on AWS first and foremost. Gadgets and Prime subscriptions are also a nice chunk, but the marketplace is all Brand. If it weren't for that no one would really know Amazon, so they should care less about profitability.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– fredinno 1 point 67 days ago +1 / -0

Amazon isn't (very) profitable because of its growth-high model, same as Tesla, so most of its profits are reinvested into the business/getting new customers.

Amazon also first became profitable in 2003, so it's not like it couldn't return money to shareholders if it wanted to.

Amazon was one of the few to survive the dot-com crash for a reason.

Trump didn't make Truth for the money, so he should find a way to merge or partner with Twitter / Elon and other alternate platforms. It'd be better for everyone and his 2024 run.

Trump can post any political message he wants on twitter as soon as he posts it on Truth without violating his exclusivity agreement with Truth. He has no need to merge with Twitter and Elon has no reason to do it either. Elon wants to cultivate an image as a neutral party. Partnering with a POTUS candidate wouldn't do that.

If you drink a Coke, you're going to be too full for a Pepsi. Not so with social media. I got to a ton of different websites. And people have so many places, and the time to consume social media. It's probably cheaper and better to go after Apple for AntiTrust and their abuse of a monopolistic platform. Apple play-store needs to be separated from Apple. The AntiTrust stick needs to be taken out and used against both Apple and Google. Funding lobbyists to do this is far, far cheaper and with all the right people a massive suit can be brought upon them.

Then open source it, similar to git, destroying Apple and Google's arranged monopoly forever.

permalink save report block reply
▲ 7 ▼
– BringTheCat789 7 points 67 days ago +7 / -0

Android already is open source.

The problem goes far deeper than that.

Getting a phone that doesn't spy on you and lets you download whatever apps you want is dead easy.

The problem is with common users. Even though Android is open source, the common user is fine with running the closed-source variant provided to them by their phone's manufacturer, or sometimes their carrier.

And the real problem comes down to the distribution of apps. Even on most closed source variants, installing an app from the Internet is usually completely possible and not that difficult. But common users are not accustomed to doing that. The only way they know or want to bother with is using the Play store. Which leads Google to have a monopoly on wide distribution of apps on Android devices.

Anti-trust laws should have been used to break up big tech a long time ago. Especially Google.

The Play store is shit, by the way. It turns out that having the monopoly on Android app distribution by the same company that provides ads for Android apps is a major conflict of interest.

Every time I think of something stupid basic I want my phone to be able to do, I cannot find an app for it. The apps I do find that claim they do it are either completely fake, executed stupidly bad, and/or utterly riddled with ads. Things that I know some developer has certainly made for themselves and released for free for others to use. But Google Play won't let you find them, and I've heard it discourages developers from uploading basic apps like this by making it difficult.

Nothing ever "just works" anymore.

The same conflict of interest exists with their search engines. It's why when you search something you only find poorly written, but search engine optimized, blog posts vaguely about what you searched for. They used to have algorithms that deranked sites with aggressive SEO. But it seems they neutered these after realizing these sites have their ads on them and sites with good information often don't.

I feel you 100% on this. You would be surprised at how many people agree. Everyone is unhappy about the spying. They get that the collusion is corruption. They have seen enough Star Trek to understand the potential of technology and its abuse.

They used to have algorithms that deranked sites with aggressive SEO. But it seems they neutered these after realizing these sites have their ads on them and sites with good information often don't.

Your personal identity and psychographics are far more important than optimizing web pages. Even high end technical SEO. They have replaced much of the original algorithms with Deep Mind. With natural language processing and semantics they can make a lot more decisions faster and far easier. Display can also be highly personalized. There is no way for almost anyone to detect how these systems adjust content to who, for what reason, or at what scale. They can be shifting what people understand from a console. That kind of control doesn't change your convictions. But it is the current thing.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– BringTheCat789 1 point 66 days ago +1 / -0

I have no idea what you're talking about.

What I'm talking about is how the majority of results on a Google search for a technical question (like diagnosing something on your car or whatever) are blog-style posts that are written like a middleschooler trying to reach a specific word-count, but only found one sentence worth of information to base his entire report on.

permalink parent save report block reply

– npc_1234 1 point 66 days ago +1 / -0

I agree with you completely, I would just like to add that it is getting more and more difficult to run Android open source due to carrier control. Certain cell service companies (specifically Verizon because I have experience with them, and I'm sure others as well) go out of the way to make it difficult to run AOSP devices on their networks. These companies will make agreements with the OEMs to lock down the bootloader, among other things, to make it insanely difficult to replace the ROM. The last time I had to buy a phone, I had to do a long search just to find an affordable (sub $200 used) phone that both had an SD card and headphone jack (non-negotiable requirements for my phone buying) and an unlockable bootloader, that was compatible with Verizon. I settled on the LG v20, which has been a great phone for me, but now the carriers want to shut off non-LTE voice calls, and conveniently, there is no VoLTE support for non-stock ROMs for that phone. I don't need a supercomputer in my pocket, I only need a device that will allow me to call, text, browse PDW, play podcasts in my car, and take pictures. I can wait to go home and use my PC to do everything else.

What IMO needs to happen is a lawsuit along the lines of the one that broke up the original AT&T, where it was determined that Bell could not force you to use one of their rented landline phones if you own a compatible phone from someone else. A cell phone service carrier should be only that, a service carrier. You should be able to use any compatible device on their network given you pay for the service.

I can wait to go home and use my PC to do everything else

The worst part is that even though many of us do have supercomputers in their pockets, they are incapable of doing these more intensive tasks, even though the hardware should be able to facilitate it.

In everything except tailored tech demos, they fail when trying to show off their power. They struggle to even do basic things consistently without bugs.

Man I'm sorry I missed this post it was a great and refreshing read. I wish more people like yourself would discuss this more often. I agree with a lot of this and have some knowledge on how serps work. Especially in data compiling and volume. It is all surveillance. The power these companies hold over businesses is completely misunderstood. And it is vast. Then they track all the work force and then everyone else. We can go on.

What Librem is trying to do is in part the right direction. I don't know a better direction right now. I like what they are doing with chips.
