That's the whole point to make being a landlord unprofitable and untenable so they'll sell their property to blackrock and the govt can fill them with migrants on taxpayer dime.
They passed this BS in my city. You can still run a criminal background check, you just can't tell them that you rejected them for it.
The thing that will really fuck landlords in NY is if they pass "right to renew" garbage like they did here. You have to offer the tenant renewal of their lease now or give them "relocation assistance." You can just raise the rent here, because rent control is illegal. But in NYC, you can't just jack up their rent, I believe.
I’ve seen stats that show rent controlled places always raise rents to the maximum allowed by law and it often outpaces non controlled rentals over time.
Some areas with ultra low rates / leases from years of abuse by tenants/city are outside the normal, but rent control fucks the tenants and the landlords and keeps the landlords from improving properties, so I have read. I would not like to be stuck between the bank note payments and the rent control laws in that area
How the fuck do you manage when interest rates are climbing like they are now but you can’t raise rent.
I’d assume those relocation fees would somehow be included by some paperwork fee across all leases to protect the landlord. The costs have to be covered somehow. I don’t know how smaller guys get anywhere in places like that. Do you have insurance for that ?
I forgot to describe the "relocation assistance" - 2 months of rent. Here, I could just offer a tenant the lease for the next year at a 100% increase in price because rent control is illegal under state law. NY does not have this workaround. I have no idea how they would deal with this garbage.
My city is at the forefront of this "tenants rights" BS and they like to point to areas in Canada that have these policies, neglecting to notice how absurdly unaffordable it is to live in these areas.
Bronx born & bred here! You need to go Moses and lead the based NYCers out of the bondage to the promised land of the Red States! No mana from Heaven, but they do have BBQ!
Not red states. Swing states. Move to the swing states and turn 'em red. We don't need Desanctimonious and Little Marco getting 60% of the vote, we need Kari and Herschel getting 55.
Is it even possible to flip a swing state anymore? Republicans do well in states that already have Republicans running the elections. Lake and Walker probably already won, and that made no difference.
the only people who would vote for Democrats are young stupid people and criminals.. so it's not a surprise that Democrats are pandering heavily to Young stupid people and criminals..
I was in New York during the World Series. The guy next to me at the bar said with a straight face that Houston wasn't diverse enough. The blacks on it were too light-skinned. He was serious.
After hearing all the "Houston has no blacks on their roster!" complaints, I was shocked watching the World Series to see that there actually were blacks on their roster. They were from Latin American countries, so they didn't count as "black". I.e., dark-skinned black+Hispanic mix doesn't count as black.
It will never be enough for any of them. This was common sense decades ago to anyone with an IQ over 80. There is no negotiations/compromising with them. With that said, did he go there before, or after Katrina, because our NOLA transplants after Katrina did a great job of “diversifying”, and destroying southeastern Texas, especially Houston even further.
I'm suddenly curious which insurance companies, if any, Blackrock actually owns. Since the big money maker for Berkshire Hathaway has always been GEICO.
You know our politicians are sacks of shit when they actually make me feel bad for land lords. Most small and medium sized landlords have been getting fucked over by these COVID laws not allowing them to remove tenants that don't pay their rent. What type of super retard would even make a law like that?
The agenda is to destroy the middle class from every angle. Overprices energy prices (electricity, gas, oils/kerosene) , taxation, destroy their 401K's, destroy their property investments by making them no longer in control of them and crazy regulations and charges, disrupt supply chain lines, disrupt farming practices, tax cow farts and impose animal limits per farm etc.....everyday think tanks are dreaming up ways of destroying the west while giving China, India and every other 3rd world shithole free passes to pollute as much as they like and free of consequences.
This is one of the drivers of inflation IMO, so many landlords got screwed over that almost all of them are jacking rent to the very top of market rate. A lot of landlords used to be mr nice guy and if their operating costs were met they wouldn’t raise rents. Now almost every single landlord is out to get every last dollar they can after they got screwed over for 2 years of non-paying tenants and nobody gave a fuck.
You’re right, it’s so completely stupid and the Consequences of it were so predictable it’s absurd.
That, and the cost of repairs and HOA fees have gone up at least 50% since Biden got in.
Had to raise rates by $300/mo on my place just to break even from 2020, just because of higher costs from repairs and tradesmen. Probably going to have to stick on another $200 next year because of higher costs this year too.
Pretty much. More regulatory burden means those costs generally get passed onto the tenant.
If the state makes changes so that landlords are forced to rent to less desirable tenants, the costs of non-payment of rent/eviction gets passed to every good tenant.
The downside is not just if they can pay... but are they taking care of the property or are landlords going to have to rebuild it after the newest drive by?
I'm betting they'll end up vetting By name as well. It'd suck to miss out on a place to stay, all because someone has an incredible sense of pattern recognition. Lol
That's illegal but, it's legal to exclude applicants that lie on the form. It's also legal to require 6 months of employment, or to require a good rental background check(there is a rental credit score)
Criminal records is a touchy issue .. I'm a landlord and I have found it very useful in weeding out potential problem tenants. I ignored a stain on one tenant's background and it turned out to be a huge mistake within 2 mons these tenants had 30 cops lined up the block pointing guns at my rental.. These shitheads were copper thieves with low paying day jobs
These idiots were stealing copper wire from the railroad that apparently had something to do with railswitching so trains dont collide with each other. total whack jobs , they did not give 2 shits about the potential catastrophe they were creating. Last I heard one of them got their act together and went to trade school and became a very high paid welder
You can make a shit load of money thieving copper with zero skills if you are inclined to take the risk... They were cleaning out new construction in my area a few years back, they estimated that it took 2 guys about an hour to cut out about $1000 (scrap value) wiring and pipes in the new construction houses that were hit before the drywall went up that would have slowed them down... That's $500/hr, and if they hit 3 or 4 houses in one night that is a lock of crack for one day's thievery especially if you have a scrap yard that doesn't ask questions...
People really don't understand that landlord is a business. Rent goes up because costs go up to maintain. It's not the super being greedy, he has to make a living too. It's a business or an investment. And the tenants that can up and leave will if a convicted criminal lives nearby.
My dad bought a house in 2004 in Buffalo, so different city but same state, and made the mistake of renting the top half of it out to people who got section 8 money (free rent from the government) because he thought he'd never have to hound them down for rent money.
Once they moved out 2 years later, there was 11,000$ worth of damage they caused that the government wouldn't pay, even though he had 100% concrete proof that it was all their fault
I have a family member that did the same thing, he bought a second house just for the purpose of renting, he rented to Section 8 people for the same reason, guaranteed rent, and just like your dad, they fucked the place up, and even though he filed claims the government refused to cover any of the damage... He never rented to a Section 8 person again...
Crazy thing is, NYC already makes it very difficult for landlords to evict tenants. Now that can't even properly filter who can get into a building (beyond the usual requirement that you prove you make 40x-60x your monthly rent per year).
They are hoping the landlords are forced to sell after renting to deadbeats (that they weren’t allowed to check if they were deadbeats) so Blackrock can buy it all up cheap!
This will be the straw that breaks the back of a lot of landlords and they will sell their apartments to the government and the government will then hand it over to their friends. This is just a another step towards seizing all private property
The Uniparty wants Blackrock to own and rent everything because Blackrock is basically the Uniparty without all the "constraints" of being part of the govt
Here's the thing...if a criminal is arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced...then they do their time.
Are they then not free? The idea of public records is one thing as they are public . Yet the idea that the time did not rehabilitate...THAT'S the problem.
You a loser, you should go to jail until you learn to be good. You don't learn to be good, you swing from rope. Then no need for background checks. Why jail not make bad be good?
They're getting what they voted for. Fuck 'em
Agreed, I feel bad for the few and far between based NYCers but most of them need to feel the pain.
There’s more based NYC’ers than you think. I’m one of them. And I guarantee most landlords aren’t the ANTIFA type
That's the whole point to make being a landlord unprofitable and untenable so they'll sell their property to blackrock and the govt can fill them with migrants on taxpayer dime.

And blue hair women over 40
Life's too short to live among libtards.
They should sell the property and buy half of another state. lol
Oh boy, a nickel! I’m going to buy my OWN hotel!
Snake Plissken has entered the chat
I heard you were dead.
lol great movie.... Happy Juice, now with less pulp!
For the amount the can sell an NY place for could probably buy and refurbish half a ghost town in middle America!
Nobody there to buy it at the market value
I'd love to do that. Keep people the fuck off my land without even needing to yell at them.
They should leave.
Hi 🥺
Same

They wuznt kangs
Diversity to these loons looks like the cast of Roots.
Or the guest appearances on a Master P album
Getto dope
What did they say about basketball teams?
It will never be enough for any of them. This was common sense decades ago to anyone with an IQ over 80. There is no negotiations/compromising with them. With that said, did he go there before, or after Katrina, because our NOLA transplants after Katrina did a great job of “diversifying”, and destroying southeastern Texas, especially Houston even further.
Did he call it HOWston?
you think they have fair elections in new york?
MA dems are a special kind of retarded, they are voting themselves into losing population due to confiscatory taxation rates.
Less population, declining real estate values, declining tax base, businesses leave...like NY right now.
And then these fuckers migrate to cheaper Red cities and turn them into shitholes too
i'd say they are just as "fair" as any election held in California.
Exactly. So what if a few very fine people live there for free? #reparations.
Yes but the children did not...
The children aren't landlords yet. When they are old enough to be, they hopefully can get rid of the Hoebag Hochuls of NY.
what's the minimum age for landlordship in New York?
It's 18 in order to own property in the US (assuming tied to the age of majority to be able to sign contracts).
what's the UCC say about 17-year-olds purchasing a phone charger at a convenience store?
It’s a lot easier to buy a charger than to purchase the deed to a house. Cmon man. No malarkey.
Why do my instincts tell me that somehow this won't apply to really large property holders like Blackrock?
Black rock doesn't care. They just own everything and it's all insured.
I'm suddenly curious which insurance companies, if any, Blackrock actually owns. Since the big money maker for Berkshire Hathaway has always been GEICO.
All of them?
The article says the bill was introduced in August by Councilman Keith Powers.

Eek! I wonder how many people noticed that he really looks like the rat from Ratatouille?
because it won't. by design.
"they didn't run a background check in NY! they ran it out of their office in TX! So it's legal!"
You know our politicians are sacks of shit when they actually make me feel bad for land lords. If the landlords go bankrupt, BlackCock Investments can buy their properties for cheap. LOL.
Is that a new group, I haven't heard of them.
There is nothing wrong with landlords whatsoever. Rents being "too high" is caused by regulatory burden that landlords don't even usually want.
Pretty much. More regulatory burden means those costs generally get passed onto the tenant.
If the state makes changes so that landlords are forced to rent to less desirable tenants, the costs of non-payment of rent/eviction gets passed to every good tenant.
Ok, they will just look for gaps in employment and housing.
Given the state of the rental market in New York, I predict that landlords aren’t going to care, as long as the tenants have the cash.
People are reaching their rental limit, especially when they compare other cities for what they’re getting in NYC.
$4000+/month to live in a shoebox with rats and the smell of garbage & piss outside? No thanks.
They want to be a part of it, New York, New York. LOL!
It probably was cool at some point.
Not now. Some previous point.
When Rudy was mayor
That was but a reprieve from a downward spiral.
there are some youtube videos of young adults paying $1500/month for what was once a janitor's closet. SMH.
The downside is not just if they can pay... but are they taking care of the property or are landlords going to have to rebuild it after the newest drive by?
For that price I'd live in a fucking van.
It's illegal probably.
I'm betting they'll end up vetting By name as well. It'd suck to miss out on a place to stay, all because someone has an incredible sense of pattern recognition. Lol
There's always another way to filter your options.
Raise deposit rates.
That's illegal, too. One month deposit is max allowable.
Whos running the business? Who owns the property?
Welp, thats what you get for living in a blue of blue areas.
That's illegal but, it's legal to exclude applicants that lie on the form. It's also legal to require 6 months of employment, or to require a good rental background check(there is a rental credit score)
Probably will be illegal soon, because well they are racists or something something
Just like Portland.
A landlord can no longer deny a renter's application on the grounds of a credit score lower than 500.
https://portlandrentalhomes.com/portlands-rental-screening-criteria-faces-big-changes/
Makes me think it's to help pedos live by schools. Cali, Oregon and Washington are like clearing the registry and stuff like that.
Updot sir
This pampering of criminals has GOT to stop.
America loves joggers
Good thing you don't live here then, eh?
I moved back to Wyoming for a reason.
to live near your celebrity crush... Liz Cheney
Liz Cheney lives in a Hollywood exclave, not Wyoming. The Waltons are the second richest family in that town...
I feel like it will make life more dangerous and more robberies for the poorest parts of town which tends to be brown and black, but oh well.
Good
Copper thieves... Jesus Christ, how dumb are these people?
These idiots were stealing copper wire from the railroad that apparently had something to do with railswitching so trains dont collide with each other. total whack jobs , they did not give 2 shits about the potential catastrophe they were creating. Last I heard one of them got their act together and went to trade school and became a very high paid welder
prolly after the other guy died suddenly in a train wreck
You can make a shit load of money thieving copper with zero skills if you are inclined to take the risk... They were cleaning out new construction in my area a few years back, they estimated that it took 2 guys about an hour to cut out about $1000 (scrap value) wiring and pipes in the new construction houses that were hit before the drywall went up that would have slowed them down... I know someone who made 6 figures on copper theft.
They voted for this so they should be happy!
800 credit score requirement
Yup, you don't really need to look at someone's criminal background. A credit score is good enough.
social credit score
People really don't understand that landlord is a business. Rent goes up because costs go up to maintain. It's not the super being greedy, he has to make a living too. It's a business or an investment. And the tenants that can up and leave will if a convicted criminal lives nearby.
They'll implement (more) rent controls when that totally unpredictable outcome almost immediately happens.
My dad bought a house in 2004 in Buffalo, so different city but same state, and made the mistake of renting the top half of it out to people who got section 8 money (free rent from the government) because he thought he'd never have to hound them down for rent money.

There is a war on landlords brewing. Kulaks, they call them in Russia.
Shouldn't the glorious state be in charge of housing, really?
No, keep the govt the fuck outta it. Anything they touch turns to shit.
Pretty sure he just forgot the /s.
I hope.
who can afford to live in NYC anyways, and who really wants to live in NYC?
Obviously crriminals.
All by design to push out the small time landlords.
"Why can't I find anywhere to rent? Capitalism has failed"
Every lefty who can't connect reaction to action.
Crazy thing is, NYC already makes it very difficult for landlords to evict tenants. Now that can't even properly filter who can get into a building (beyond the usual requirement that you prove you make 40x-60x your monthly rent per year).
This won't make a difference. Credit checks, employment checks, and references from past landlords will weed the folk who'd get burned by this anyway.
It's so hard to rent these days even if you're a good person.
Other places have prevented people from running credit checks and can't consider evictions older than 3 years old.
Employment checks can also be faked.
They are hoping the landlords are forced to sell after renting to deadbeats (that they weren’t allowed to check if they were deadbeats) so Blackrock can buy it all up cheap!
Lol sorry shaniqua looks the mike filled the occupancy
Whoops
Haha good thing they have stupid names that give them away.
fuck em i have zero sympathy for NY's at this point and I'm from shit ass Jersey, at least we're actually quasi-red, stole it from Ciattarelli
Yes they did steal the election there.
As someone who lived in nyc and knows exactly ((who)) the landlords are… no sympathy.
new york is a shithole
Brooklyn is fucked, Luigi.
Criminal background checks are racist. 🤡🤡🤡🤡 just like personal bank checks
Here's the thing...if a criminal is arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced...then they do their time. Are they then not free? The idea of public records is one thing as they are public . Honestly, who gives a shit. I'll run background checks on whoever I want.
Still impact larger landlords and people who use management companies.
exactly
john carpenter the director of escape from la and new york was a real visionary. he saw it coming.
Escape from New York 🏢🏢🏢🏢🏢🏢🏢🏛🏢🏢🏢🏢🏢🏭🏢🏢🏢🏣🏦🏢🏨🏦
This will lead to more prejudice. “I’m not allowed to do l background check on you, but you LOOK like you have a criminal record…”
Lol, all they will have to go off of is skin color.
The shitter's full anyway, no one will be living there.
Oh, boy the Steinberg’s aren’t gonna like this.
