There are some legitimate PHDs like in some sciences, but there is a shit ton of politics that goes into it and you have to play ball. A lot of great minds have had their careers stymied, because they were smarter and seen as a threat by the people within these universities that wanted to protect their generous and sometimes quite corrupt fiefdoms. They often want a political consensus not science.

Almost done with my PhD and it is a fucking shitshow. There are no standards for who gets to graduate, it’s all up to whichever ego-driven professor controls your life.

You know all that money the gov sets aside for science? The universities eat at least half of it with ridiculous overhead fees, and use it to fund a bloated administration and popular but useless undergraduate programs like psychology.

The journals are the big problem though. For-profit entities that charge outrageous prices to view what should be public knowledge. And if your paper doesn’t fit their agenda, it won’t get published, regardless if it is good science or not. It’s less of a problem for some fields, but anything related to environmental science or medicine should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Quality control is practically non-existent despite peer review, I can’t even tell you the number of papers I’ve encountered that don’t even include critical methodology details but still get published.

Not that they would have accepted me, but I always had a bad feeling about graduate school, and nothing I have ever heard since has made me wish that I participated in it. I like learning, and I would gladly take more courses to learn, but I'm saying nothing I've heard has made me want to be a part of the PhD factory.

The doctorate was invented by the Prussian government in an attempt to push their unique brand of totalitarianism which they hired Hegel to sell. Nearly every elitist totalitarian organization today--Nazism, Communism, the Islamic Brotherhood, the Masonic Lodge, and on and on--all have their roots in Hegelianism.

It depends on if you value time… I would say it’s stupid to do a PhD for something you aren’t passionate about and don’t expect to make Jack shit or have a teaching position because those go to faggots that suck off the higher ups. That being said it’s notoriously long for people PhDs in older liberal arts disciplines and less time consuming for science. I would say the cheapest and quickest is one in psychology. The quickest doctorate in general would be like a DBA or EDd but they cost money. Some of the liberal arts or science ones will give you a stipend to offset tuition but you got to be a professors bitch. Trust me I did this and was able to keep the professor at arms length and I didn’t have to do that much.

I learned more in private industry in a month than I did in six years of college.

I usually do theoretical work in black holes, gamma-ray bursts, etc. But I have also done some radio work in the field of active galactic nuclei using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA -- an array of ten separate radio dishes from Hawaii to the USVI that act as a single dish whose diameter spreads from those two endpoints). I also access HST and Chandra X-ray Observatory data for studies on X-ray binaries.

The HST and Chandra data were archival, so technically anybody has access to those data. Usually there is an embargo period with the data such that it all becomes public no later than a year after the observations with most observatories.

Black holes are intriguing. So the black hole warps space time… at the event horizon and beyond the outside have you observed the shape of the hole? In other words is it a defined shape or amorphous? Is the event horizon at any point in the amorphous or defined shape… or the whole thing or does the matter just disappear? Is it a giant container and can that shape be observed?

Im not fat or unfit or vitamin D deficient. Those are both 80/20 ratios iirc. Then I take extra vit C and zinc, get plenty of nicotine with minimal smoking, and have no comorbidities. So from 99.97% chance of survival, Im on the good side of all those factors too.

I think a lot of people believe that concept because the people they’re exposed to in their work are mostly followers even if they’re intelligent. Many of the smartest people take their competency and start a business if they independently minded, while many of those who don’t think on their own join a pre-existing institution.

The reason for this is dependent minded people rely on others, they can remember and solve issues but they lack the ability to think originally and creativity. While independent thinkers think on their own and will want to continue doing that so they go a route that enables them to do that.

Essentially people sort themselves out and many independent and dependent people join institutions that exist already but a large amount of the independents get siphoned off when they go their own way and it gives a skewed view to those who witness lots of dumb smart people in their line of work.

I agree. I have witnessed on many occasions researchers who research a single astronomical object for their entire careers...and they end up being full professors making $120k/year and going all over the world for various conferences. Most boring people in existence.

I took a bit of a different road and spread out my interests even while in grad school, so I was seen as a "jack of all trades" type researcher and nobody wanted me because I did not have the most highly cited papers in a particular field.

But I have well over 100 citations currently and working on many different projects that satisfy my curiosity. I was just hired this semester as an assistant professor at a private Christian university in Texas. Couldn't be happier where I am in life right now.

There are researchers/faculty who work so hard on publishing and have seemingly sad, pathetic lives. All work and no meaning. I was called to Texas to teach astrophysics to some eager young Christians and I derive much pleasure in doing so. We're on a wild ride and I am a new father with another on the way in February.

To be fair, he didn't really invent the technology as we define invention.

But he is a subject matter expert on these kinds of therapies since he was in the room helping invent the technology.

I don't mind people saying he invented it, as a shorthand, but don't be surprised if another scientist disagrees with him being called the inventor. There are other inventors of this technology, similar to him. They have kept their mouths shut, though, because this hype is making them rich.

Name one mRNA therapy that treats any disease.

Malone didn't independently invent the process which encourages cells to uptake mRNA. Not the least of which because mRNA uptake is a natural process.

He didn't even discover it, either.

This entire field of medicine is still in its infancy, and Malone played a significant role. He didn't make it happen, though, because it still hasn't resulted in any positive benefit for medicine. It's never worked, and that's why he's speaking out. He helped invent significant portions of the technology, but it's still never worked, and he's said as much.

Many of the scientists most people work with are totally for sale. It doesn't make them real scientists.

I think of real scientists as people who seek to further our understanding and control of our environment. But most scientists are more than happy getting paid to further falsehoods.

Anyone can do experiments, following a strict protocol, and universities are happy to sell degrees to people who can follow a set of directions. But that doesn't count as a scientist in my book.

I know very few scientists who are capable of even questioning whether their experiments are productive or informative.

I have a PhD so can tell you the fastest way to get one in sciences. The truth is, it's a similar difficulty level to a web search.

  1. Turn down a better paying job like McDonalds to get a meager stipend, which usually waives course fees.
  2. Join the research group of a Professor who is new, or any which has pressure not to have negative attention.
  3. Do a terrible job that the Professor wants to fire you but doesn't want it to get in the way of tenure later, so they instead make you graduate as fast as possible to be free of you.

This is what happened to a terrible student when I joined a lab. The better you are the longer most will try to keep you on a terrible wage like a slave.

Pretty sure the jackass that made the Pfizer add doesn't have a PhD or is one of those special fast PhD graduates, because it's usually a point of embarrassment to appeal to authority of the PhD and not recognize the flaws and limitations we all have. Usually only insecure and inadequate people rely on pointing out a PhD.

It's telling that Pfizer doesn't try to dispute any information directly and goes for retard level ad hominems.

I've seen this happen twice. It's often easier to push a shitty student through than to get rid of them. Everyone in the department knows but they still wind up with the same fuckin degree.

Fortunately I'm at a much better institution now and the grad students are way higher quality. They're still complete NPCs about social issues tho.

Usually only insecure and inadequate people rely on pointing out a PhD.
