Senate elections are way too national anymore
In a few days, we will know whether the Democrats have a 51-49 majority or we are back to 50-50. In the meantime, we read about the costly campaign in Georgia. So much money, or so they say:Democratic Sen. Raphael War...
I've been saying for years: we need to repeal the 17th Amendment, and each state needs to enact legislation that bans donations from out-of-state individuals/organizations.
#RepealThe17TH
Yep, the 17th turned the Senate into a Super House, which was never the intent.
It nullified the 10th Amendment for all practical purposes.
"the new aristocracy"
i completely agree. The senate is supposed to represent the states themselves and not the BS we have now. If we can ever get a constitutional convention called by the states then this needs to be item #1 or 2. I would also add congressional term limits, and public financing of all national elections
Calling a convention will expose the entire document to alteration, wouldn't it? I'm afraid of that. Too many fanatics and Romneys to trust that they wouldn't alter the 1A and 2A.
Wouldn't any amendment that gets proposed have to be approved by 3/4ths of states before anything was changed? Even if a conventional somehow gets convened it's unlikely anything will come of it
If you give them a chance to steal it, they will.
I’ve been a big fan of the Convention of States project and have followed their progress for years. I got onto my county’s Republican central committee two months ago. The first meeting a guy brought it up and was wanting to send the state party committee a letter asking them to endorse it. He couldn’t even get a second on his motion to write the letter. Out of the 30ish people present nobody would second it. I didn’t realize what was happening until they moved on to the next topic or I would have. Something that seems like common sense and county parties won’t even discuss it.
I agree. I want term limits but I don’t trust a CoS to not do the opposite.
"Central committee" just don't sound too American. 🤣🤣🤣
So tired of hearing this... yes, you could propose anything... but fuck all will pass because it needs such a large majority. There would need to be overwhelming agreement from the states.
I think you greatly underestimate what is possible when these colluding conniving criminal cocksuckers get together to fuck us over...
... and especially after everything you've seen them pull off so far.
A Convention of States just leaves us open to more gutfucking from the political establishment.
You don't get anything accomplished by sitting around thinking what can't happen
I never thought Trump could get elected in the first place.
This is true. A convention states wouldn't do us any good right now. The cultural climate isn't right for it. But America is fucked if we never get there. All we are doing is slowing down the inevitable. If Trump was back in office he would be half done with his term and I doubt his second term would have gone any different than the first. The swamp would still be around. He couldn't run again. We would be back with Bush type RINOS in no time. Not to mention how quickly all the progress made can be wiped out. So we need the cultural and social climate to get this done. If it doesn't happen American is dead. Just matters how soon. 20 years or 50?
I think it can happen. I just don't know how we can light that spark to get it started.
So do nothing then? Got it.
https://conventionofstates.com/
No, I'd use what we have to nullify. I honestly don't think the 16th fits with the spirit of the document. The Constitution doesn't give power to the Government, it gives it restrictions. The 16th is a clear violation of that. I also think the 16th isn't actually ratified sufficiently to be in effect.
Look into the approval process. What you're worried about can't happen.
Yes, and purely coincidently, the Fed and income tax was done right before WW1.
Senate ratifies treaties, thus NWO agenda would need to more easily control the senate. Also makes it way easier for lobbyists to push their agenda through federal law rather than having to go state to state
It wasn't necessarily to represent the states. The idea was you'd have a different class of people in the Senate than in the House. Actually, there was an idea that Senators might take a more national view of things since they're not beholden to the direct whims of a state's electorate.
whatever it was, it completely changed the intent of what the founders envisioned. Senators were supposed to represent the state and as a result were to be appointed by said state (and recalled when they didn't). When the 17th was ratified they basically shit all over themselves as they lost a ton of power in the name of states rights
This is absolutely true. For all intents and purposes, we now have two Houses of Representatives. It just happens that the Senate has a longer term.
I mean, that's still half true, look at "Four plus two" Lindsey.
Let me rephrase. The idea is that Senators would consider what is the best for the nation as a whole alongside what is good for their state.
There are genuinely tough decisions which Senators make which may privilege one state above another, but also creates a rising tide which raises all ships in the Union. Senators would be able to make these decisions and only have to explain their rationale to a comparatively small group of people compared to the state's electorate as a whole.
Nothing Lindsey Graham does is good for the nation or his state so while he may take a national view of things, it's certainly not to anyone's benefit.
I agree.
Don't forget the 16th Amendment. Federal income tax. The communist government of Woodrow Wilson took away state control over the senate and the budget at the same time. That and a few SCOTUS cases, like Wickard v. Filburn, were the key holes in our constitutional republic that have ensured the inevitable fate of our slowly sinking ship.
Honestly, just about all the amendments suck. 16th onwards especially.
That darn Bill of Rights and 13th.
Haha yeah, I should have specified post-1791 amendments.
Laughs in Citizens United.
Yep money shouldn't cross state or county lines. But I also think only individuals should be able to donate period. Take teacher unions for example. Our education system is largely fucked because of the massive amount of money they have to donate. So even if the money only stays in state that still gives groups like this way more influence than the average person. This point goes with the first but you can only donate directly to the person in question if you want them to receive it. Not to the RNC or DNC. Again you can donate to these groups but the RNC and DNC will not be able to dish that money out to candidates. This will take a lot of power from these groups. Look at what Mitch was able to do in the primaries because he's the one who controls the purse strings. Last thing is there should be cap on how much money one person can donate. The idea that one person can donate 10 mil to a candidate is also bad. That means the top earners in any state could still influence our elections.
This is basically what happened in Colorado. Rocky mountain heist is a decent doc on it. But a handful of rich far lefties have been able to drive colorado from a purple state to far left blue. I think the cap should be 5k. That 5k has to include gifts of any kind. We don't need people gifting stock or expensive vacations etc...
Yeah wtf retard Grammer is this?
Public school
*government school
Publik skool: where you get hooked on phonics real good.
H1B Import from India
grammar.
Couldn't resist..
Bot
Who wrote this fuckin headline?
Sounds like non-native english translation to me.
i know, right? bad grammar
try illiterate grammar
It may not be grammatical, but I like it.
Wtf stickied it? Makes us look stupid.
It's so dumb i dont understand why itd be stickied
Silvio Canto, Jr.
We shouldn’t be electing senators at all. The senates purpose was to be the voice of each state not the voice of the people. The people’s house was always the house of reps.
We need to return to appointed senators who will vote based keeping power within the states. This would make state legislatures much more powerful which they should be.
A thousand upvotes, sir! Many of our problems could be laid at the feet of that disastrous Amendment.
Imagine how much worse a CA senator could be than feinstein
First things first, we need to bring the federal government back down to what it was intended for. The federal government should only be dealing with disputes between the states and foreign affairs (including border security).
The average individual shouldn't have hardly any interest in the federal government, because they shouldn't be able to affect that individual's lives. Only the state representatives should really care about who is in the federal government.
50-50, 51-49, what's the difference at this point? Either way, we were cheated out of yet another midterm election, and democrats (including RINOs) will pass everything they get their hands on.
Romney will always make it 51 for them.
Don't forget Collins and Murkowski!
Why miss out on Miss Graham?
honestly there really isn't one, which i have been arguing. The best we could theoretically get out of him winning is preventing judicial and other appointments, but the typical RINOs would fuck that up even still. We have the house so we have split government which should go a long way in killing any biden agenda
The difference is that Dems can just ignore Joe manchin for example. Him stalling and being salty about getting stiffed last time could have prevented some nominations and legislation.
Unless he switches parties or goes Independent... Which would make sense if the Dems just ignore him.
He no longer has political power. By switching parties, he can strengthen his position and regain influence.
I don't want to have Joe Manchin the RINO in the party. Was just making a statement about how Trump getting those extra Senate seats neutralized Romney, Collins and Murkowski.
Now Sinema and Manchin could be neutralized.
This syntax hurts my brain.
We apparently have all the evidence.
THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THE ONES WHO CAN ARREST THE TRAITORS DON’T.
Until that’s solved, nothing changes.
Deputize me. I'll fuckin' do it!
If I only had badge and uniform giving power. Oh it’d be so fuckin Constitutional.
Tri corners and all.
Hell yes. If I'm ever Governor of a state, I'm bringing back the state militia. Fitness, laws that protect people who serve in the militia, etc. I'd also move to have political affiliation be a protected status so it would be a hate crime to silence someone outright instead of having a discussion and arguing the merits of their claims.
I would no longer consider military service to be for fags if I could serve in a based state military
Only residents of the election in question (ie: anybody for a federal election, state for state-wide elections, district for district reps) should be allowed to aid anyone in that election. The fact that voters in Massachusetts are allowed to send money and support to Georgia is disgusting.
It's insane that it's legal. I've donated to a few u love from out of state. Kind of defeats the whole purpose of state representation, when most funding comes from out of state.
Couldn't a single state do something like this: we will fund your states campaigns, if you win, you owe us in the senate, to benefit our own state.
Basically, shouldn't be legal. It's no different than people from other countries if they donated in our federal elections.
We're never getting around it. Donating money is a form of speech which is protected under 1A. The courts have ruled this over and over again (correctly). Foreign money is different because it's coming from non-Americans.
its done every election and in every state now. its ridiculous
The fact that Walker stated he lives in Texas and claims property "homestead" tax exemptions in Tarrant county tx, complicates that a bit. He also has done fundraising events in tx.
Yes, and I think the fact that he did that makes him a fucking retard. I'm not sure how he's even qualified to run in Georgia.
I’m going to try to make out the headline by reading the article.
We need to return to the original way Senators were chosen, by state legislatures.
100% agreed
Repeal the 17th. Let individual state legislatures select senators.. the way the Founders designed our republic in the first place.
Not sure why you were downvoted as everyone saying the same thing was upvoted. So take my upvote. I despise the 17th.
Thank you.
It's because I'm openly Jewish and some hater was breaking down into name calling and whatnot. I'm certain he scrolled thru my previous shit and downdooted me.
I don't care.
Probably need to start including disclaimers:
Although I may be Jewish by heritage, nothing makes me happier than making America great again and promoting an America First candidate and agenda. Fuck Soros, never met him, don't know him. Fuck Greenblatt, never met him, don't know him, he sounds like a whining bitch. Yes, the talmud should be sifted, and zionism needs some serious PR cleanup.
Hopefully that doesn't put you off, and thanks again fren.
No worries fren. You don't need the disclaimers, dumbasses are gonna be dumbasses.
agreed, not sure why some idiot downvoted you
It hardly matters.
Thanks fren 🐸
Anymore? That’s not how you use that word. Anymore doesn’t mean “now”. Something has to be taken, removed, or ceased being something to use the term “anymore”
Repeal the 17th.
This is an absolutely horribly written article and with how many shitty as fuck AT articles I'm seeing stickied lately I am starting to wonder if one or all of the mods are on the take.
PATHETIC.
The senate should be selected by the state legislatures. The amendment (edited to say amendment instead of law) that changed that should be deemed unconstitutional. You are now witnessing the fruits of that abomination of constitutional law perversion.
well unfortunately it went through the constitutional amendment process and was ratified. States did a big stupid on this one
The states didn't do it. The individuals who fell for the feel good communist propaganda did (the individual voters). The same voters who gave us Bush1, and Clinton, and Bush2; i.e. you and me.
This use of "anymore" is like, my absolute grammatical pet peeve. Been driving me nuts for the last 15 years it's been on the rise.
50.00000000001% Warnock. 49.99999999999% Walker
Lol
Embarrassing headline
bad grammar but yeah
It is way past time to repeal the 17th Amendment. The Seneate never should have been relegated to popular vote - that is why we have the House.
All faggot Mitch had to do was not start a civil war in his own party. Couldn't do it. Or else he'd hang alongside his chicom wife.
Definitely a case to be made for repealing the Seventeenth Amendment.
I don't recall a time I cared about any senate race outside of my own state before Democrats started fully flipping to open communism in public.
it is a testimony to the success of the "us against them" strategy, the divide and conquer of those whose party politics is a masquerade.
Same thing happened in Virginia when Ollie North ran for Senate. Massive “out of state” $ and media blasted him non stop. It was disgusting 🤮
the amount of money pouring into this georgia one for Warnock has been astronomical with almost every bit coming from outside the state. This election may be the most costly senate one in history
I’m seriously confused about the so-called moderates. How on earth is it that someone like Kemp wins the governors race, only to have some of those voters decide fake pastor Warnock is the best person to represent them in the senate?
Kemp is extremely popular in Georgia for the job he has done overall. Stacy Abrams is not and Kemp siphoned votes away from her. The constant ad blitzes by warnock and democrats has had an impact on Herschel, to the point that either people voted for Warnock or the libertarian, or just did not vote at all for senate in the general. That being said Herschel and Warnock both still got as many votes or more than Abrams
yes
this
and voter ID
and election DAY
17th Amendment has been a COMPLETE DISASTER!!!!!
Correct. The states fucked themselves on that one
What use is grammar anyway?
IDK who thought it would be a good idea to vote in a racist for senate in georgia.. oh yeah democrats. They control most of the republican party as well.
To install a racist for senate via fraud in Georgia. FTFY
Does it matter with all the fucking rinos?
right now i would say no, and not without us getting super majority status
Has anybody else noticed this weird usage of “anymore” in the last several years?
I like it but I never used it this way in the last 40 years. It’s so awkward I can’t adopt it even if I try.
Like in this article title I would say “these days”, or “nowadays” instead.
“Anymore” to me describes a state of being that has ended, not an ongoing or new state. So you’d rework the title to say “Senate elections are not local anymore”.
Thought it was something people in the state I live in say (not my home state), but people in my home state say it now too, so it’s not a colloquialism.
Have you been using this for more than a few years? Maybe I’m the weird one??
Edit: it’s a thing! “Positive anymore” - https://ygdp.yale.edu/phenomena/positive-anymore
It's about the same level of usage in my observation. I notice that it's used that way by Northeasterners - much less in the South if at all.
i do not get it. I have noticed it as well
This is a poorly written headline that makes us look stupid.
Senate elections are much to citizen involved. =)
should only be state government involved as the founders intended
The title of this post hurts my brain when I read it.
It certainly becomes National once it's getting close to tie land.
