Granted it isn't to the point it got to in MGS where literally every facet of the world's economy depended on war, but all the same.

War should be a human experience, not a mechanical one. That is the best way to ensure wars are only fought when they are truly necessary. We're straying far into the realm (not the exact circumstances, but close enough) of the latter stages of the Metal Gear Solid timeline, where nanomachines suppressed the emotions of soldiers, making them into unfeeling machines who aid the War Economy by taking the human factor (emotions such as fear, regret, etc.) out of war.
Also, if you have the time and inclination, play the MGS games if you can. The overarching story is getting really eerie given current events. Especially the War Economy part of the story, where the world's economy becomes sustainable only so long as there is war. It seems rather topical considering the U.S. pulled out of Afghanistan and within a few years there's another war for us to fight (by proxy, but still). Granted it isn't to the point it got to in MGS where literally every facet of the world's economy depended on war, but all the same.
Someone needs to make MGS Abridged where you don't need to piece together 700 hours of content across 56 games that are all told non-linearly and are interspersed with weird comical satire that I'm supposed to take seriously. I'm never going to be sold on some guy like Revolver Ocelot. I don't know who that appeals to in a larger serious story but some dude using single action black powder revolvers to ricochet shots is definitely not me.
The camp of the story is part of what people love, to be honest. Everyone playing it knows Ocelot's character is inherently ridiculous, but we don't care. It's no more ridiculous than the vampire, the guy who can control bees, the boss that is a ghost, the boss that required you to plug your controller into different ports to beat him, and the entire premise of MGS2. The whole series is endearing not only because it has real things to say, but also because it doesn't take itself seriously, and never even tried to.
And, of course, while we're talking about odd shit in MGS, the ladder scene in MGS3. That part where you spend two minutes (literally two actual real world minutes) holding up on a stick to climb a ladder while a vocal-only version of the game's theme song plays. Is it ridiculous? Yes. But it has also become one of the most iconic moments in gaming, a perfect example of giving players a moment to breathe and take in what they have done. It helps that it is placed at almost the exact middle of the game, and is thus also a sort of intermission.
Seems IMHO like the better strategy when compared to the Russian cannon fodder approach.
