What makes something taste "home-cooked" is a lack of seasoning. So when they get an unseasoned meal at a restaurant, they actually like it because it reminds them of "mom's cooking."
It pains me because I know my family likes eating at restaurants that do season their food. We go out all the time to places like this. But whenever I have them over and make food for them, they don't like it because I make it restaurant style (aka good) and they're expecting a "home-cooked" meal.
It goes further than spices, too, nowadays. At least in my experience. My family would rather have a sandwich made with store-bought bread than fresh, scratch baked bread. The seasoning shit is just a matter of taste and really doesn't matter, but preferring highly processed food versus real food is very bad and a sign of our downfall.
That could be true. My parents definitely went through some tough times. I suppose once you get use to eating cheap food, you start to enjoy cheap food as you associate it with good times with your family.
And that's going to be passed down to younger generations even those who didn't go through tough times, as they'll be nostalgic for food "like their mother's."

My mother had a handful of things she would regularly cook. Many of these were totally unseasoned, but sometimes we were expected to add salt and pepper to our own plates via the table shaker. But, most of the time, any seasoning or salt comes incidentally in the form of a sauce or something. For example, burgers were totally unseasoned (no salt), and nobody bothered using the table shaker. But we dressed the burger with ketchup, pickle, etc. which all provide some level of salt indirectly, so it's better than nothing.
Likewise, my mother would grill chicken breasts. Totally unseasoned during the cooking process, except for an onion wrapped in the foil with the breast. But these were typically drizzled with italian dressing once on your plate. Steak was totally unseasoned, but would get A1. A pot roast was made with no salt, but would have potatoes and carrots in the pot, and salt/pepper was sometimes added to your individual plate via the table shaker. You get the idea.
But you also have to consider that most of the time any sort of side dish would be something pre-packaged or from a box. Sometimes entire entrees would be. So these naturally come seasoned. And my mother also had a handful of recipes that got seasoned properly either incidentally (reliance on a prepackaged ingredient that is inherently seasoned, like store bought bread crumbs) or explicitly (the occasional higher-effort meal, usually just involving a pre-made spice blend, but the exact same one she's bought for years).
It's weird because my family would really like these (just like they like restaurant meals), but refuse to understand or articulate why they like them (because they're seasoned!).
