If its a disk image, you can usually recover the files if they haven't been overwritten through a variety of means.
Hell with modern versions of NTFS you can use the filesystem log to replay/rollback standard deletions.
It can't be a disk image if it doesn't have subfolders. I don't know what it is.
Maybe it's a filesystem image, in which case it won't have any trace of deleted files, but I can't see why it wouldn't have subfolders.
Since it was a Mac, it wouldn't use NTFS, but Apple now has its own COW filesystem which would let you undelete some things.
