That's what matters. I don't really care that much about my great great grandparents. They aren't here and their genetic contribution to my body is nearly zero -- unless I happen to be Jewish with the inbreeding.
Of course it is important what you do with the time given to you. That doesn't change the equation. It's not only life that is passed on, it's civilization. No one can give more than their life, but collectively, everyone is participating, for better or worse.
That's how wars are won. You die in the surf at Normandy so that others can storm the cliffs, and so on, and so on.
If everyone only cared about themselves, there could be no civilization. That (in my opinion) is the message of High Noon. You may have to sacrifice, but if you are sacrificing for the right things, it is meaningful now and in the future.
