How Biden's New Washing Machine Regulations Could Ruin Laundry Day
When Cincinnati firefighter Ed Wallace bought a high efficiency Whirlpool washing machine, he came to regret the decision almost immediately. The machine used less water—not enough to clean Wallace's work clothes—and his colleagues at the firehouse quickly...
Get a commercial model like a speed queen if you want clean clothes.
Older analog model is best. Family has had one for years
There is a place near us that refurbishes old machines. They work the way you expect and the parts are dirt cheap.

That article perfectly covers my experience 10 years ago. Wife was tired of our 25 year old washer/dryer combo. We bought them used and I'd kept them alive, replacing washer pumps, a switch, heater elements and thermal fuses in the dryer. It wasn't a problem but she wanted new.
A couple months after getting them and finding all the same issues (never cleaning clothes) we found someone selling an older Whirlpool set. Ended up trading the new washer/dryer for a few Adirondack chairs, no one would buy them.
Had to replace a switch in the washer. $5 part and 10 minutes. Good times.
Alternative option, (just got the email that they are back in stock.) Amish portable non electric washing machine
https://www.lehmans.com/product/wonderwash-non-electric-portable-clothes-washer
My grandma had a washing machine from the 50s that ran until the 90s. The wiring diagram was printed inside and was literally just a timer and a few relays along the motor and only needed a belt replacement once. The replacement lasted about 20 years, and it is on the verge of needing replacement again.
Electronics are great, but they don't have the lasting power.
Most of the parts that wear can be replaced easier than new stuff, though - bearings being one part that will wear over time- and they used way more off the shelf things like that back in the day. Way less plastic, too. Everything from back in the 40's and 50's was built in a way that simply isn't anymore, and it's a damned shame. Dryers are a little different, the heating elements can be hard to source, or the gas manifolds for gas dryers.
We had an old wringer washer when I was a kid in the 50's. My mother told me not to put my fingers close to the wringer, and of course, being a dumb ass, I did, and it pinched my fingers. I must have been 4 or 5 at the time. Valuable lesson learned.
The washing machine where I'm at has this stupid locked door thing that won't stop until the thing stops spinning 100% and it's so annoying.
Reminds me of this one time at a restaurant ordered a 'sizzling plate' of something and the waitress puts it in front and I asked "oh, no warning about it being hot?" and she tells me, "surprisingly, when I tell people that it (the sizzling plate) is hot, they tend to try to test HOW hot it is, so I stopped warning people."
I'll never forget when my wife forgot she had ordered fajitas and grabbed the handle of the mini skillet they brought the steak and peppers out on.
That was a nice evening out.
LMAO... sorry.
Had my arm stuck in one. I learned about the release that day
Washing is woman’s work?
I had a 1990s upright washer I bought used and the plastic knob mechanism was brittle and came apart one day, leaving the circular wafers of the exposed circuit board. But like you said, the circuit diagram was printed inside on a sticker and it was obvious that the motor was DC and the gearbox/belt was set to agitate and recirculate when the motor spun one direction and drain and spin in the other. So instead of fooling with replacement parts I disabled the lid safety switch and mounted a DPDT toggle switch with center off position. Down=wash, up=spin and you have to turn it off yourself. I had to fill it with a garden hose and spray inside to rinse while it was spinning, but I had a garden hose from the hot water heater in the kitchen already. It worked great and when I moved out I left it (with instructions). I should have taken it with me. After that I had to suffer through what passes for 'apartment washers' these days. If you buy a top-load washer and it doesn't have a lint catcher and recirculating pump (WTF.), take it back.
Clever fix.
I had to tweak mine to make it fill completely up; the new electronic controlled machine is a piece of junk. I am going to invest the $$$ to get the old one fixed.
If you have an analog model, there are vids out there on how to make 'em fill all the way up.
IIRC SpeedQueen is still made in the USA too. If you care about that sort of thing.
Btw, for more water in the machine put it on Bedding cycle.
I did not know that. I’ll give it a try.
Yep. Learned that by walking past it while washing the pillows and said ot should fill up that much for all cycles. Also clean the trap out (usually bottom front behind a door) often if you have dogs, cats or kids.
It does max fill. We use it anytime we're washing things that are really big but lightweight
Mine has two water levels, half full or full. It fills completely up for the rinse cycle, and has an extra rinse cycle option.
Sounds like my new SQ. I do so miss the one with knobs instead of electronic pushy buttons. That had variable fill and that filled with water with the lid up...makes for easier machine cleaning. I like a clean machine.
Yes mine has that option as well. Last one didnt.
I think ours says “deep rinse”- you have to push that button to get the full water on both cycles.
Got a set last year. Does great on my work clothes from steel mill. The guys loading it in my truck said all their machines weigh at least twice as much as any other brands they sell.
Got a speed queen last year when our 22 yo Fisher Paykel shit the bed like Biden on a day that ends in Y. That thing spun faster than any machine made today. The clothes were almost dry. Simple machine that never needed service. We decided to replace rather than start repairing a machine from last century. I tore it apart to get the stainless steel drum and found that the pump hose was clogged with hair and lint. Poor thing got euthanized and it probably had another decade in it. All the new washers are piles of shit with fancy sprinkles on top to make them pretty. All the salesmen agreed the speed queen was the only one to come close to what we had. Government regulations turn off innovation and quality competition.
I wonder why Biden has an obsession with laundering?
Well done Pede!
🙂
☺️
😛
TBF - he does shit himself a lot.
Kek!
Hey, it takes one to know one! 😊
It'll probably run more effectively when you can only buy three items of clothing per year, just like they want.
I stand corrected.
LOL!
Like the uniform clothing allowance for the military. Gotta spend 10x up front and slowly get back what it cost over 10 years when the new uniforms come out.
Unwashed peasants don't deserve to be clean.
Listen Jack - if you can't afford custom trunalimunumaprzure suits and your dry cleaning bill, you ain't negro.
heard lots of horror stories about new washing machines breaking down constantly and never cleaning clothes. I'll stick to my machine from the 90s thanks. had to replace the motor but its worth the trouble.
the whirlpool timers and transmissions are around $200 now but they last a lot longer than cheap chinese PCB
I replace the WP gearcases all the time under factory warranty. Just had one today, lady is 99 years old and the gearcase had water and detergent intrusion, completely coating all the other parts. The unit is only from 2018. She said she didn't need a unit with a 2 year warranty because she'll be 100 next year and isn't sure how long she'll be around.
😞
Just had to replace mine. We call the set “junk boxes.” The guy who delivered and installed said “I’ll see you in about 7 years” as he went out the door. Hope they last that long. Already having an issue when I use the bulky setting. They go into a spin cycle and don’t fill. I have to unplug it to get it to stop. Read a complaint online that said they started the machine when they left for an errand and when they came home later it was still spinning.
I can't wait to run the same load through the wash 3 times just to get everything clean but imagine the water savings!
Like the water saving toilets you have to flush 3 times
Brought to you by the same unelected government leeches who fucked up a can with a spout that pours liquid.
That improvement demoralized the suburban white man. Mission accomplished.
It’s not “high efficiency” if it does a worse job than the normal models. The only thing dumber than that marketing is these new regs.
It's like when they replaced the old toilets with the newer toilets that used less water. Instead of one powerful flush, now you have to flush 2 or 3 times to get everything down.
Why are your shits so big?
Big colon/anus?
I hate that stuff, like Flushmaster. They break quite often, you have to replace parts and they're not cheap, and if the tank is compromised, you have to replace the whole unit. The old gravity toilets can literally work for decades, there's so few moving parts.
He doesn't even look like a human.
Look at his stupid fucking face.
Why less water? It evaporates or goes right back into the river. It's not a limited resource. Most places are not in a drought.
California mismanages their water just to create shortages
I literally can't remember the last time I heard "the water cycle" mentioned by any form of media.
yet Climate change you bigot
Gonna be a black market for older washers
My wife wanted some fancy front loaders about ten years ago. Splurged and got some faiy pricey high efficiency machines, washer and dryer.
We moved in Dec 21 and left those pieces of shit in the old house. The new place came with an old old pair that actually get your clothes wet instead of mildly damp.
The old ones I can repair myself cheaply. The HE machines had their smart circuits short out twice and I had to replace the board at about 300+ a pop each time.
Fuck Joe biden
Already is I sell the older kenmores and whirlpools since 2008 because the demand is high and people hate the computerized washers, it has all but decimated whirlpool. Trump was the first to put tarrifs on the korean crap that cayused whirlpool to close several factories they could reintroduce the direct drives to the market and no one would sell anything else, they also command a higher price that the used digital crap
I m keeping my gas stove and old as dirt washer and dryer. Commies can fuck off.
Same with Duke power. They started a green initiative a few years ago where they would give you a monthly 5 or 10 dollar credit to allow them to install a regulator box on your house. When the power grid gets stressed they will turn off your AC in the summer or your heat (if electric) in the winter. All while spending big $$$$ advertising how they re trying to go green, more wind and more solar. Well fuck that. Spend the wind, solar, and advertising money on improving the grid and on their aging power plants. They call me every couple months trying to get me to sign up and I tell them to fuck off everytime. The caller is honestly confused when I tell them I don't care for their "green" program.
they are probably wondering what happened to your TV programming, "Damn check this guy out"
You will have to wash far smaller loads using far more resources just to get your clothes clean.
And you will pay quadruple for that energy. Bidenomics
Literaly attributing a declining standard of living with some ecofascist bullshit they made up.
Humiliation ritual.
So now I'll have to wash the same load of clothes two or three times because the first run won't get them clean. So I'm using even more water and electricity than before. Brilliant!
These people really have no brains. Stage 1 thinkers.
They want us all dirty, sick commoners that they look down on. We’re not worth of clean clothing, clean water or healthy food.
And for no reason at all…
Out of the clear Austrian sky...
That's the plan.
They want us to use washboards. They want to take us back to the stone age while they live high on the hog.
Good, maybe liberals will finally know how to work. Would love to see them complain about blisters from wringing their clothes out after having to wash them in a bathtub.
Maybe so, but I washed clothes in a tub with a washboard for many years on ranches without electricity. It's a bitch, but your clothes will never look cleaner. Clothesline dry can't be beat either.
If this stuff passes someone should make washing machines, dishwashers, stoves, etc that can be easily modified to bypass the government bullshit standards. I think people have done that with lo flo shower heads. I'm lucky enough to have found an old shower head that flows great, I love it.
Low flow shower heads have a restrictor plate inside. It’s just a plastic disc with a small hole. You can remove the restrictor or drill the hole larger.
The downside is you get more pressure coming out of those tiny jets. It can be borderline painful on some settings.
Speaking of those tiny jets, they are prone to clogging. I have to soak the newer shower head in CLR once or twice a year to keep them flowing well. Meanwhile, my OG 1956 shower head works awesome with no maintenance at all. My guests love to use it and often comment how much they miss old showers.
If I can ever find an older handheld shower head I’m buying it on sight to replace the newer piece of crap one.
Soaking in vinegar works for shower heads and sink aerators. For stinking laundry 1 cup or more of baking soda.
I will try that. Vinegar is way cheaper than CLR. Thanks.
Yw. Just to be safe I'd check your manual or online version, e.g. my dishwasher can handle vinegar instead of rinse aid, but some can't.
It’s a $30 shower head I hate because it clogs. I’ll take the blind risk. 😆
Put it in a freezer bag to use less vinegar
Yep, whenever we travel my kids complain about the crappy shower heads in the hotels. There's a huge difference!
The moment somebody does, you can bet your ass that the brave men and women at the FBI will shut them down.
True
By shut them down you mean kill?
"There was the usual boiled-cabbage smell, common to the whole building, but it was shot through by a sharper reek of sweat, which-one knew this at the first sniff, though it was hard to say how was the sweat of some person not present at the moment." George Orwell, 1984
It really is amazing how that book was supposed to be a warning...
They already did this and many machines don't clean well now. Is this article really saying they want to put MORE limits on the amount of water used? Like 2 tablespoons or something?
It was actually the regulations creating throw away appliances that made me stop believing in or caring about "the planet" or anything "green". If the Gov is ok with everyone spending $$$$ every 5-7 years and dumping the crappy appliances in the landfil then I don't have to care. I'll just sit here with my older/overbuilt appliances and Speed Queen and have them fixed over and over until I die. Now THAT'S what I call caring about the planet!!!!!
Tell me where water leaves the planet and how it's mans fault.... I'll wait
Actually the international space station destroys water.
I could get behind that but just by consumption because it's in orbit or what? You know what I meant though ;)
Did you know the US government regulates your dish washer's primary wash cycle? That's why dishwashers today take twice as long as they did when you were a kid. Because the government mandated that they use less water and less electricity.
However, the government allows dishwashers to have secondary, unregulated wash cycles. If you want your dishes washed faster, switch to an alternate wash cycle, which most dishwashers have available.
Why do democrats always attack appliances?
To get into your house
pass laws get kickbacks
The compliant appliances will definitely be assembled by some deep pocketed unions.
We liked are new side by sides so much, that we went back with the old top load roper model.
Nothing quite like guys sitting around in toxic residue
First they came for the toilets....
I've been flushing 7 gallons of water for each use rather then 5 gallons ever since this nonsense started.
Reminds me of this concept of pay for service you'll find in 3rd world countries. There's certain areas around town where the houses are open and anyone is welcome to come in. Basically they provide you any service in a house: wash clothes, use bathroom, take a nap, use a sink, buy cheapass premade food sitting in a fridge, almost anything, but you have to pay for every little thing. You would not believe it happens until you see it, families living in a run down house across from a major street and all the doors and windows are opened and random ass people just walking in to take a piss while your kids play in the living room.
In this case you could dodge legislation by privatizing the services, but that's obviously not the problem here. That's where we're headed though, eventually private providers provide better services than licensed businesses.
For everyone but him who soils his pants hourly
Hooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonk 🤡
Speaking of banning gas burning appliances, it turns out that consumers only produce 8% of the pollution, and industry 92% of the air quality problems. So the dickskulls wanting to force air quality and climate issues on us are full of baloney.
how about they pass fucking laws through congress instead of EOs. fuck this government
We bought one of those pieces of crap when they first came out. To get enough water in the thing you have to shut it down and restart it three or four times or you can just wear dirty clothes. So we do the shut down and restart dance every time we wash clothes.
Because this old cuck walls around shitting his pants doesn't mean we all have to smell like it too
Sounds like a taxpaying cityboy problem. I live in the woods. I got unlimited free running water from a stream (or ground well). It can be pumped with electric pumps, which can be charged from solar. Free firewood too.
Boil your hardy clothes in a metal barrel heated with a propane turkey frier or woodburning stove. Bonus points if you then seal the barrel and roll it back and forth for a minute. Let cool, pump out dirty water, pump in clean. Then hang in a greenhouse to dry.
Hotter water gets clothes cleaner with less need for estrogenic chemicals that remain on the clothes and get absorbed through the skin. Same for dishes, etc.
Don't buy crappy clothes that can't survive boiling.

It will get Joe's money clean!
