Nobody will freeze, it never gets below 45 degrees in SF. It's just about control. They need everything to be electric and connected to wifi so they can monitor and control people.

I love my reel mower, and it's a good workout. It also is a cleaner cut and quiet. Those fatties would hate it.
I love my gas furnace. If the power goes out in the cold, it doesn't take much from my little generator to keep the major house items running.

Yep, I have a generator as well, just for the big stuff (gas furnace, fridge, well pump) and a single circuit for lights.

The power company here got so efficient and aggressive with trimming the trees back from the power lines, I've never had to use it in over 10 years. The longest we've been without is 4 hours. I didn't even bother with the genny, it was kinda fun.

We don't often either. The fiber company came through and hit a line one day and knocked it out for 8 hours. Came in handy. It's I small inverter generator and dual fuel. Just in case shit. Have the family to watch out for.

It's an insurance expense, you'd just as soon not have to use it. It doesn't mean you don't buy it.

I own a nice Stihl chain saw for similar reasons. About 10-12 years ago we had a windstorm that literally blocked all three of the major entrances to our subdivision. Fortunately there's a back way into the neighborhood that I used to get home that night (had been at an event). You had to know about 10 turns to use it, really confusing street layout, and GPSs weren't what they are today.

The next morning the trees were still down, me and the long time next door neighbor were out in the driveway talking, when the new guy across the street came in asking how to get out of the neighborhood, that every way he knew was blocked. We told him you could get out, but he'd never figure it out! LOL

Anyway, that event made me buy a chainsaw just in case.

I also have a chest freezer with close to $800+ in meat. Way easier to fire you the gen. I get free shit where I can though. My gas mower was free and 2 snowblowers. Just needed some heavy maintenance. I use the gas mower for the first and last mow of the year.

I'm jelly. Used to live on 13 acres as a kid. Id honestly consider a rider and gang reel if I had acreage. We have a rider my dad has he hauls to the cabin to mow the sand mound and grass area on occasion. I just like the reel. It's quiet and gives me some Zen time. I enjoy it

California is mostly rural and conservative. Our elections are rigged because democrats control the electoral system. If you remove the Bay Area and LA, you'd see that California is majority red.

If you take the time to look at a red/blue map, you'll see that the bluest state in the nation is actually New Mexico.

The 2nd greatest president in the past 80 years this country has ever seen was governor of California in the 70's.

Our elections got corrupted after Arnold "screw your freedom" Schwarzenegger helped democrats take control of the electoral process. Again, the majority of California is mostly rural and conservative. Remove the Bay and LA and you have a deep red state.

I'm seeing what happened to your state, happening to mine. If you go by the 2020 election numbers, Kansas only voted like 60% for Trump. Kansas City, Wichita, Topeka, Lawrence, and Manhattan all were Biden. But when you drive through any town less than 80,000 people, all you see is Trump and God.

I'm a Kansan, gets pretty cold in December and January. It's very very windy, especially the western half of the state. It doesn't get Wisconsin Cold, at least not for the length of the northern states. We see negative wind chills many many times. When it's below zero, 45 feels like 90. But it ain't comfortable. And I'd much rather be in 68 than 45, and I believe you would too.

Sleeping is a totally different animal. I sleep much easier in cold than hot for damn sure. I know people who won't kick on the air until the thermostat says 83. Fuck that.

Electric heat pumps are the future of home/industrial HVAC, but they're not there yet. Give it 5-10 years and we'll probably see some mainstream/reliable products.

Electric heat pumps will work all the way down until around -15F, and after that they can turn on the less efficient resistive heating (aka 'space heater') method. It's not the best at low temps, but it can certainly still work.

As soon as the outdoor temperature drops below 35 degrees Fahrenheit, the heat pump efficiency deteriorates. The system will strain to keep the home warm inside when the temperature outside falls below zero degrees Fahrenheit

This just means that your electric bill will go sky high whereas natural gas has a much higher BTU.

No their efficiency drops off a cliff, I've gone through the btu ratings of various VRF systems and currently have one due to a design mistake our combined total of 4 ton indoor heads are ran by a 5 ton unit, which works out in our favor, as the btu ratings of the outdoor unit drops to about 4 tons by the technical docs around 0F but still can't keep up.

Check my numbers here, but it sounds like you're saying the specific heat pump you're referencing has around a 20% loss by the time it gets to 0F. That doesn't mean my point about working until around -15F is incorrect, or that switching to resistive heating at a certain point being a solution is incorrect.

The efficiency in one, say down to even 60% when it's super cold, can still be more efficient than resistive heating. Also, you would size the unit for loses due to temperature.
