Psalms was the hymnal of ancient Israel. Then Solomon's books of wisdom, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes (those two are actually quite useful). Song of Solomon kind of stands alone. ;) After that, it's all prophets. Most of those have been fulfilled. Some prophecies remain unfulfilled.
After Malachi, God didn't send any prophets or speak to Israel at all for 400 years, until Christ came. This is called the Intertestamental Period. Some of your apocryphal (not considered Scripture) books like the Maccabees were written during this time.
Generally, you read the Old Testament to get the context for Christ, who was Himself a Jew, and the Messiah. Most of what happens in the Old Testament is an example of "what not to do." We can be grateful we are not under the Law anymore. Our sins are fully paid for by Christ's substitutionary atonement on the cross.
Therefore, we don't have to be born Jews, or keep the Law perfectly (which is impossible), or make animal sacrifices to temporarily cover our sins. Jesus made one sacrifice for all.
