The guy at the front desk was surprised, but this was the top judge and obviously you simply do what he says. So 300 or so jury candidates file into the gigantic courtroom. It's empty except for the judge, the prosecutor, the defense lawyer and the defendant.
The defendant was about 18 years old, a black kid. He was charged with murder. The judge didn't want a trial, so he was trying to scare the kid into a plea deal. So 300 potential jurors stared at this kid. We sat in silence for a full couple of minutes. The judge just let the kid sweat.
Then we were dismissed. Don't know what happened in the case next.
