I like it. I mean, I'd probably have voted to give parents more Right's, but I like his reasoning at least. That is, pass the bill, but also fight for abolishment.

The reality is that there will be no abolishment of the federal government's involvement in education.

I'm afraid you're probably right...

Trump, however, does make good promises and tries to keep them. He has put abolishing the Department of Education on his list of promises. It's the only chance to get rid of it.

It's a good stance that he took.

This will not pass the Senate and Biden would veto, so this was a great opportunity for Republicans to signal two things: parents rights and abolishing the DEA.

This also got the teachers' unions and Leftists on record for opposing parents' rights. That will matter in local elections in 2024.

Very pleased with this "virtue signal".

Oh the slippery slope of government granting rights instead of those rights being reserved and the government restricting them. I suppose without abolition this might be as good as it gets but it sure feels like being lambs led into the corral.

It’s the same garbage argument for “free trade” that destroyed the manufacturing industry!!!
“Let the power of the free markets rob you dry” when China uses slaves to produce at low cost and cheat! Matt Gaetz would “let the children be abused by any blue state because.. let the states decide”. That’s what it looks like. I must read the bill before concluding, but my understanding is that it only reinforces the parents across the board and doesn’t centralize education. I might be wrong please say it.

How I view this:

Matt Gaetz vote wasn’t needed to push it through so he brought the end goal to peoples attention.

This bill makes it easier for parents to see what’s going on instead of blindingly trusting the system. The end result is more people providing input and helping fix the issues at their local level, thus helping end federals control. It’s a process and he’s playing his part.

Assuring rights to parents is what the government should do. Protecting people's rights rather than making laws to trample the rights - that's upholding freedom, not increasing government reach.

– Trump-16-20-24-28-32 12 points 75 days ago +12 / -0

no no NO! Government should NOT be granting specific Rights. Our founding documents don't grant us Rights in a way that are "positive Rights," that is, Rights that are dictated saying what we CAN do. Instead, we are granted Rights by 'negative Rights," that is, specifically limiting what the government can do.

Take the 2nd amendment. It doesn't say "People should be allowed to have guns." Instead, it says the government cannot infringe on the Rights of people to arm themselves. It is limiting the government, not the people.

Cool. It's fucking bullshit though. Remember when we had the house and senate, and they passed a repeal of obamacare over and over and over knowing Obama would veto. Then, when they had the actual power to kill it off completely with a Trump signature, they sabotaged it, McCain was the one to do it.

They pass bills like this to keep you donating so they can keep running. They know Biden will veto. They wouldn't be passing bills like this if Trump were in office, because they know he'd actually sign it.

House's time would be better spent on investigations and oversight. Try and take down some of the commie agencies.

permalink save report block reply
▲ 13 ▼
– yuge_covfefe 13 points 75 days ago +14 / -1

McCain sabotaged it purely to keep Trump from having a win. He showed in that moment that he was a bitter, resentful old man who couldn't put country or even party over his own private vendetta. He proved to us all how unfit he was for any office, much less the presidency, by letting his own vindictive nature drive his actions at an enormous cost in freedoms and treasure to both his constituents and the nation at large.

Good riddance to the scumbag. But, don't conflate issues. On this occasion, it was this petty old man that screwed us all, not the Republicans at large (for once).

Agree with you on your other points though. Republicans are happy to virtue signal when they know they'll lose. It's much harder to get anything done when they're winning.

Matt Gaetz wants the Department of Education abolished. He feels the bill just puts more government into the institution and more regulations. He's principled against growing government. At least he has a good reason based on his principles. I would probably have still voted for it if I were him because the two fights are not mutually exclusive. Fight for abolishment, but in the mean time, make it easier for parents to have control over their children's education.

From Wokeness to funding to bathrooms to Critical Race Theory, the federal government SHOULD NOT be involved in education. I don't want to strengthen the federal Department of Education. I want to abolish it. I don't want Congress more involved in decisions that are best made in local school districts. I want the Congress less involved. Therefore, I voted against today's Republican bill to establish a federal “Parents Bill of Rights.”

Thanks for finding his comment. I like his stance, I see what you are saying but I think it's more important to be principled. It's how we avoid getting to places like this in the first place and it's what we should be modeling for future generations. Besides this bandaid (while doing some good) isn't going to fix the gaping wound that is public education and might be a factor in convincing some not to homeschool, assuaging their consciences just enough. There are going to be casualties whichever path we take. I think a bit of accelerationism here might be better.

Also anyone with more than 2 brain cells would understand that the McConnell (D)-run Senate wouldn't ever pass it, and unless you rubbed a 6 year old's hair on it Biden wouldn't even touch the bill much less sign it so it never had even a snowball's chance in hell of ever becoming law.

Typical Republican dickless fucking bullshit. Make a stand on an issue that makes absolutely zero goddamned difference, and when they have the power to make changes they tuck their dicks so far back up their own assholes even they don't know what fucking pronouns to use.
