Before one of the recent hurricanes in NC, the gas stations around where I lived (near Raleigh NC) began running out of gas. Folks were lined up for MILES in either direction, only to find out the fuel tanks were dry or almost dry.
I remember cars running out of gas right as they pulled up to the tanks and the fuel tanker trucks having to maneuver around automobiles just to drop off more gas.
The circle k's near my house closed down just to replenish their stock.
My town had ~ 2 dozen gas stations, less than 10 just near my house.
I remember folks making maps of who had gas when, and would alert others.
My point being, having a few gas stations can work until there's an emergency.
