As a young Republican during the Bush II presidency, I had absolutely no nuance in my opinions. I literally thought “he’s a Republican so I trust him and his decisions.” I remember a lot of people questioning if the Patriot act was a good idea, or if it was constitutional, but I think we settled on “well, we had to do something to prevent another event like 9/11” or some other awkward logic, while at the same time concerned with how it would be used in the future.
I also look back and remember hearing some bullshit story about how Bush “shed a single tear” while visiting wounded Iraq War veterans, when a mother questioned why he sent her son off to die. Now I know that shit probably never happened.
