My understanding is that death by lethal injection is actually kind of horrific. It's just that they can't move or scream or anything, because the first drug prevents it.

These scumbags murdered that man in a very very cruel way - they picked a random person whom they had no quarrel with and battered him with a deadly weapon for fun, and he suffered for about a day until he passed because of their actions. They raised it to that level. Any punishment that results in them suffering intense pain for less than a day is not cruel in the context of punishment for these specific people in this specific case. Nor is it unusual - they already did it. They made it this way. Their actions brought intense suffering to reality. It's not unusual if it's a response to their actions, a reflection of their actions. Any modern punishment, and most ancient punishments fit this situation.
Hanging in public was most commonly used in time past, because it is the best at getting the message across to other scumbags. No quick drop, just a gentle raising or removal of a step, and the convicted has an intense last few minutes on Earth. Not cruel, nor unusual. Certainly not "cruel and unusual".
Do it on freeway overpasses and leave the bodies to rot for maximum exposure. The message is critically important. Knowing that they were punished is one thing, but seeing it (even pictures) delivers the message in a much more persuasive way.

I just read that the victim retired as the police chief for Bell, CA, which I remember as the most corrupt city in CA in 2010. This guy retired in 2009 the year before the scandal blew up. He took his bloated pension and moved to LV. His salary, leading 48 officers, was almost equal to that of the Sheriff of LA County with 13,000 officers under him. The chief after him got too greedy and blew the whole scam and took the city council down with him. It’s unfortunate how he died but he was a piece of shit that helped a bunch of democrats scam a small town for years.
