I think pulling it on him and warning him would have been the better choice and if the idiot was still threatening then a shot could be justified. Like delivery guy must have really convinced the court he feared the guy would attack him if he just brandished the gun.

Hand held phone, but being raised near guy's head could be precursor to a strike. It is reasonable for the delivery guy to be in fear for his safety, which appears to be, at least in part, the intent of pranksters' actions. Justified.
