My sibling has a huge case of TDS. She can't articluate anything other than "orange man bad" and she lives in a FB echo chamber that just parrots things back giving her validation. I've challenged her to tell me what 'bad' things he's done and I can't get anything of substance. Of course, I can counter with the good things he's done and she just says "that doesn't matter". It's a true mental disorder, because outside of politics we get along great.
I've observed that there are several factors at play in most such cases. General narcissistic attention whoring, an inflated sense of the importance of their opinions, an attempt to shame acquaintances into compliance with the narrative, appropriating other people's struggles under real political danger (because it's cool and gets victim points.) But mostly they forgot to never believe your own dumb publicity. The few I know, or knew, have built a make believe cartoonish Trump monster in their minds and then convinced themselves that it is real. SAD!
I was on vacation with my mom and sister in New Orleans and we were driving around the back roads. For some reason my sister saw fit to bring up slavery, I guess cause she saw a fancy house or something. I don't remember how this happened, but I said 'all cultures throughout history had slaves' and she said it wasn't true. Then I brought up the objectively true statement that the Europeans didn't go around, rounding up Africans, they bought their slaves from other Africans.
Well, she flipped out about this, screamed 'THAT'S NOT TRUE!!' and demanded my mom pull the car to the side of the road so she could get out and have a little walk. The car was also a two door, and I was in the front seat, so I had to lean forward so she could get out. When she got out, she slammed the door and screamed 'YOU'RE SUCH A DICKHEAD.'
It was around then that I realized my sister and I really didn't have anything in common, and the only reason we talk is because we're siblings.
Honestly though, I could hang out with her just fine, even if we aren't that similar... but she just brings up this leftist crap all the time, in any situation.
Now, I'm not normally political, but I really love arguing with people so I know us being together will end up in a fight, and then with her crying soon after.
