To be clear, my handle is Ak_Ra_Stuveros in this thread, I want to ask other pedes, was there anything I could have explained better?
I get that this isn't exactly a MAGA thread, but this post seemed weird from the get-go being posted where it was.
*Made an edit because pedes gets auto corrected to pedestrians and I failed to notice.
> You are ridiculously arrogant.
Yeah, I shouldn't have resorted to ad hominem.
As someone that is both religious and believes in science, I think the OP cartoon was funny. It's not necessarily anti-science, but more showing the hypocrisy of how that argument is framed.
Approaching the Bible like a precise historical account or scientific document is a mistake. There is plenty of value in the Bible, and it all has to do with humanity. There is a great deal of insight, and whether you believe in it or not, you are benefitting from it's existence.
Not trying to dismiss other religious texts, there is plenty of good in many religions, but having more experience with Christianity it's just easier for me to interface with. The Bible is a story that reveals truths about us.
I have two premises regarding The Bible and science:
If you accept my premises, then I don't see a conflict between the two. Obviously you're free to dismiss those premises, although dismissing premise #2 would be fairly difficult.
spez: Changed "relationship to God" to "relationship with God".
I more or less accept your premises.
I just dislike when people claim that science alone will give us morality, when that's absolutely not the case. Science gives us information, but our religious upbringing informs us how to act on that information. I think we need both. Two sides of a coin.
Also, the better religious scholars out there understand that science is a way for people to better understand the world that God has created, and a way to bring us closer to him. Fighting against logic and reason is no better than fighting against God himself.
One thing that is extremely clear in the Bible is that we do not know everything, and we are often wrong. Through this framework, there is nothing science can disprove about God. God exists, and science can only help us better understand how it all comes together.
Sorry for being preachy, I usually avoid conversations about my religious beliefs, but it just seemed like it might help if I explain why I don't feel there is a conflict between the two.
I guess I should have expounded on what I said. I don't see a conflict between the two, in large part because Judeo-Christianity (JC) and science don't intersect. JC has nothing to say about science (although JC is largely responsible for science) and science has nothing to say about JC since God exists outside of our universe; science can only examine that which is inside our universe.
I get the impression you thought I was disagreeing with you, which I wasn't. My intent was to agree with you while laying out my logical premises that lead to your conclusions. If I were to reword it, I would change "If you accept my premises..." to "If one were to accept my premises...". My deductive reasoning was targeted at others reading this, not you.
Not sure what the problem is. But consider posting here then linking your t_d post to tdw post.
Reddit yuck ...
Double yuck. That cesspool sucks. I love this place. I can now call out faggotry when I see it. GLORIOUS
I used to be an atheist and a liberal. I'm currently a mental health counselor. One philosophy I try to live by is that you should go into every conversation as if the person you're talking to knows something that you don't. Never assume you're smarter or know more or know better than someone else. I had a very wise college prof who put that into my brain. I think Jordan Peterson tossed it into his book or a video or something as well. It's very useful.
The older I get, the more I see evidence of intelligent design everywhere. There is something there. A scientific outlook on creation is sensible and convenient. But there's so much more to life that science can't come close to explaining. To dismiss our feelings and emotions, our empathy and kindness, our sense of beauty and our creativity as mere side effects of biology and evolution is an insult to humanity.
Science cannot be a replacement for God an ideal and almighty. People attacking God are mostly gammas unable to deal with reality who try to deny others sanctum from their theories. It's really simple ...
You could have done a lot better. For instance you could have realized that the theory of evolution is just that, a theory. There is no concrete proof of anything. There are, however, a shit ton of things that science cannot explain and probably will never be able to explain. “Miracles” are a real thing and cannot b explained or studied through the scientific method and therefore will never be accepted by skeptics that want to paint all religions with a broad brush as being cults. I was a huge atheist until I experienced my own miracle that could not be explained. I am now a firm believer in God. I don’t adhere to any religion, but I know there is more to life than what we can see.
