Extent of NSA snooping, PRISM, XKeyscore etc were all hidden from public knowledge. Heck Clapper even lied about it under oath. Without Snowden we wouldn't have known about them.
From what I gather, he was a CIA asset protecting CIA interests, he worked for CIA and was literally trained as a SPY, in his own words. CIA is objectively corrupt and they have their own surveillance tools, why not leak those?

No one got killed or got in danger because of his actions. On the contrary everyone knows more now. Ditto with WikiLeaks and Vault7 revelations.
There was a reason he didn't share info with American journalists - NYT or WaPo. Both those orgs are compromised and now are part of deep state.
