Yeah, there are conservative Jews. There are also Jews who don't think Israel should even exist. I know you're referring to the Talmudic commentaries with the "serve me" comment. I don't know enough to address it, but I do know just because it's in the Talmud as a commentary doesn't mean it is accepted as true by the Jews.
[edit] So there are commentaries on Torah (old testament), and commentaries on those commentaries, and many of them even conflict with each other, all these rabbis arguing that this verse means this or, no, it actually means that, and you get some seriously messed up crap in some of them.
