I know several lesbians irl they are cool people. I think the attitude you're talking about has more to do with the culture around gender studies and intersectionalism.
Basically college lesbians are often joyless scolds just like college hetero ladies. So imo it's the bs they're learning while pursuing those bs degrees.
I used to hang in a pub that quite a few lesbians frequented. There were two, distinct groups.
You had the regular lesbians, who were just normal, well adjusted people. Then you had the bull dykes. The regular ones made fun of the dykes and talked crap about them all the time.
I know a lesbian couple that are great and I've met several of their lesbian friends and they're cool too. So....the broad brush 'all miserable' stuff doesn't ring true on my end.
