It is a risk to damage their party by going forward with impeachment, but it is a greater risk to their own seats if they don't do it. So they will do it, nothing will come of it, and when it fails they will just blame "corrupt Republicans" and most Democrats will keep their seats.
There may be some misleading things here. The house can issue articles of impeachment. That’s fine. It doesn’t mean the president is “impeached”. Once they issue the articles they send them to the senate. IF the senate decides to try the president in a trial then the president is considered “impeached”. The act of writing the articles of impeachment does not mean he is impeached since “impeachment” itself requires both the house and the senate. So if the senate refuses to try the president then it is telling the house “there wasn’t enough evidence to go to trial” much like a grand jury does. So let them write their articles and hope the senate doesn’t commit to a trial, because then the president cannot be considered impeached.
