He wasn't caught up with old guard Republicans, he was caught up with old Trump.
You have to remember, Trump is not an ideological Conservative like Cruz. Trump was a registered Democrat for decades. As a businessman, he donated to and rubbed shoulders with Democrat politicians all his life. As a businessman, he never really worried too much about social issues, just fiscal ones.
On top of that, Trump is really just not a nice guy. Nor should he be, don't get me wrong, but he's not what anyone expected from a politician. He is a shark. He is a billionaire playboy who doesn't take any shit from anybody, and he wouldn't play politics and just allow people to bad mouth him without fighting back. Instead, he went scorched earth ina way no one had before.
As a principled conservative, Cruz was fully justified in being skeptical of Trump. Hell, i was right there with him until the Red Dinner. That was the moment that Trump made it clear that this was no longer about policy. This was about burning that whole fucking nest of vipers to the ground with all of them still in it.
Cruz has come around just like a lot of people have. Trump is still not ideologically pure, but he governs like he is. He brings in advisors who are and listens to them. He has demonstrated that fighting back against the swamp is the only way to keep from being swept under and held under the thumb of the Deep State.
He's exactly the man we needed for a lot of reasons that almost no one really saw for most of his campaign. Cruz was justified in his skepticism, and now he sees that Trump has proven himself and it is to Cruz's credit that he has come around and is now a huge supporter.
I think he was caught up in how the old guard played the game, but he seems to be pretty genuine. I could be wrong though.
