What a crock of shit. Burning the American flag, destroying statues, destroying pro Trump supporters properties- that's okay. It's free speech. Burning a "Pride" flag - You get 16 plus years in prison.

They're really causing quite the division in this country. Watch them cry "victim" when the silent majority rises up and has had enough of this hypocrisy.

Is this comment to me? I was referring to how disgusting it is for them to be able to burn the American flag and cause havoc and nothing is done to them. Burning a pride flag gets a person 16 years. It's ridiculous.

Okay! Phew! Lol I didn't see that comment so I was like, huh?!

I will never understand how some people think. Maybe it isn't for me to understand. I hope this backfires on them big time.

He should appeal. That's why it's so great that Trump got all these judges positions to fill. Get the leftists and activists out of our justice system!

"Racist judge, only sentencing him for 16 years because he's brown."

Anyone want to start that narrative trending on Twitter? See how long it lasts? /s

>"I believe him to be very dangerous," Story County Attorney Jessica Reynolds said. "That's why my office recommended the maximum sentence."

>Reynolds said the judge agreed to the 17-year sentence because Martinez has a long history of harassment and is a habitual offender and never showed any remorse.

>"The defendant stated that there was nothing the judge could to stop him from continuing this behavior and that he would continue to do this no matter what," she said.

So locked away for 16 years for wrongthink. Got it.

While I disagree with the 'long sentence' aspect, our current legal system definitely doesn't provide an adequate deterrent against determined offenders. More often than not, they are released on bail/bond, free to commit more crimes while awaiting their 'fair and speedy trial'.

The courts are backlogged because plea bargains have become the norm, allowing prosecutors charge people with crimes for which there is not enough evidence to convict, and coercing the defendant to plead guilty to a lesser charge. Without plea bargains, people would not be charged with crimes unless there is sufficient evidence to convict them in a fair and speedy trial.

I think the best punishment for many crimes is escalating public punishment. First offense, one day in stocks at the public square (so everyone knows who you are and what you did). For repeat offenders, public flogging would probably provide an effective deterrent, and I would argue that it is no more "cruel or unusual" - or necessarily less effective - than years-long incarceration.
